Hyderabad: Barely a fortnight after the country celebrated Teacher's Day, a shocking incident of students being molested by their teachers has come to light in Andhra Pradesh.
The 15 girls - students of the Andhra Pradesh Social Welfare School - living at a government hostel in Pirigi, about 100 km from Hyderabad, were allegedly raped by their teachers and principal.
Two of them allegedly had to undergo abortion.
"My teacher told me that if I don't come to him, he will give me a TC. So, I went and then he molested me,” says a victim Sangeeta (name changed).
Another victim Divya (name changed) had a gorier tale. "I was made to undergo an abortion after six months of pregnancy at the SS hospital, Himayat Nagar. The principal gave me Rs 2,050 also and the doctors have asked me to take rest,” she says.
The incident came to light when one of the girls revealed the incidents to her parents. A rape case has been registered against the accused teachers.
"A rape case has been registered against the teachers. Investigations are on and no one will be spared,” says the area inspector Narsingh Rao.
However, the teachers have denied the charges. "I am not involved. The girl who had an abortion has a boy friend and she was pregnant because of him,” says one of the accused teachers Ranga.
These girls are just few of the many victims of such crimes whose voices are drowned either in fear or shame.
As more such cases come to light, the image of the sacred student-teacher relationship is being tarnished beyond repair
