Is convent harassing Kerala nun for tell-all writing?
Nov 8th, 2008 | By Sindh Today | Category: India

Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 8 (IANS) The relatives of a 59-year-old nun in Kerala say she has been forcibly kept in mental hospitals for over a month to stop her from publishing details of ‘undesirable goings-on’ at her convent, in another controversy to hit the church in the state.

Treesa Thomas, a nun at the Divine Mary Convent at Anchal in Kollam district, 50 km from here, was first admitted to a private hospital in Idukki district in October and then shifted to the Government Mental Hospital here on the grounds that she is mentally unstable.

But her relatives as well as a state women’s commission member have said that she seems to be in perfect health.

Thomas’ nephew Santhosh Joseph said: ‘She had last month called up my brother Benny in Ireland asking him to save her because she was being tormented by her superiors at the convent.

‘It was only after Benny arrived that we came to know why our aunt was being harassed. Our aunt has given a diary that contains details of the happenings at the convent which made the superiors upset and prompted them to say our aunt is mentally unstable,’ said Santhosh.

Benny arrived last month and complained to the Kerala State Women’s Commission and the Kerala State Human Rights Commission.

‘Following this, P.K. Sainaba, a member of the Women’s Commission, met our aunt at the private hospital and has since submitted a report to the government stating that our aunt has no ailment.’

Sainaba told IANS that she spent more than an hour with Treesa and found her in perfect shape.

‘Even though I am not a psychiatrist, I am certain after my conversation with her that she is a normal person. She said she was being harassed because she had written about certain undesirable events in a book which she wanted to publish. This was objected to by the convent authorities,’ said Sainaba.

Sainaba said she has submitted a report to the state government detailing the harassment being meted out to the nun.

Contrary to the statements of the convent authorities, Santhosh’s mother, who is Treesa’s sister-in-law, said there was no history of mental instability in the nun’s family.

‘To the best of our knowledge, we don’t know of any such family member with mental instability,’ said Santhosh’s mother.

Abdul Bari, the doctor who is treating Treesa at the Government Mental Hospital here, said she had been there for the past week.

Kerala State Human Rights Commission member Justice A. Lekshmikutty said she had received a complaint about the case from Benny and asked the convent authorities to appear before her Monday.

This is the latest in a series of controversies to hit the church in Kerala.

In August, Sister Anupa Mary, a 24-year-old, committed suicide in her convent in Kollam after allegedly being sexually abused by her superior.

The mystery over the death of Sister Abhaya, whose body was found in a well in St.Pious Convent in Kottayam in 1992, also continues. Last week, the high court said the Kerala unit of the CBI should take up the investigation.

For controversial Kerala bishop, it’s business as usual
Oct 18th, 2008 | By Sindh Today | Category: India

Kochi, Oct 18 (IANS) The Kerala bishop who is caught in a controversy over adopting a woman was back to visiting his parish Saturday. It has also emerged that another priest had earlier been stripped off his parish duties because of his alleged relations with her.

In the morning, 58-year-old Kochi bishop John Thattumkal belonging to the Verapoly Latin Archdiocese arrived at St. Lawrence Church here. He not only led the mass but also delivered a message dropping hints that even though he was being hounded, he would come out unscathed.

He performed his parish duties for the first time Saturday after the controversy broke out earlier this month.

The supreme head of the diocese here, Archbishop Daniel Acharuparambil, has already conducted an inquiry into allegations levelled by a section of priests that the adoption by the bishop was against the Canon Law. The report has been sent to the Vatican and further orders are awaited.

A top official attached to the Latin Church said the archbishop has submitted his report to the Apostolic Nuncio (Vatican ambassador) to India, Archbishop Pedro Lopez Quintana, in Delhi Oct 6.

‘On Oct 10, the bishop himself was summoned to Delhi and his statement was also taken and they have sent that also to the Vatican. Since in India we have had no precedence of taking disciplinary action against a bishop, we are unable to say how long we will have to wait for orders from the Vatican,’ the official told IANS.

On being asked if a bishop under the scanner could go about doing his job, he said the archbishop could not prevent a bishop from going ahead with his ministerial work. ‘Only when the report comes will anything be known,’ he said.

The age of the woman whom the bishop had adopted has also become a matter of debate. While it was stated earlier in media reports that she was 26, reports indicate now that she may be in her 30s.

The woman was earlier under the ‘guardianship’ of C.K. Joseph, a priest belonging to the Thumpamon diocese of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church in Pathanamthitta district.

Lawyer Anil P. Varghese who had conducted an inquiry was asked to do so by the Thumpamon diocese over complaints from church members of Joseph’s relation with the woman said it had led to the church stripping the priest of all parish duties.

‘Yes, I had conducted the inquiry and had submitted the report in 2005 and the complaints raised by the members were found to be true. Father Joseph had shown a letter from the mother of the woman asking him to take custody of her daughter,’ said Varghese.

A parish priest attached to the Thumpamon diocese said there were two inquiries conducted by them and based on the reports they took action against Joseph.

‘As a result he has not been given charge of any parish, but continues to be a priest. It was found that the woman used to pillion ride Fr Joseph’s two wheeler and that was not in good taste,’ said the priest who did not wish to be identified.

Media reports said the woman is in her late 30s and apparently met the bishop while on a pilgrimage to Europe last April. Since then she has been reported to be close to the bishop and recently he adopted her, which is not allowed.

Trouble started when a section of the priests attached to the diocese of the bishop gave a written complaint to the higher-ups, which forced the archbishop to look into the matter.

Srinagar, October 7 The J&K police and Army on Tuesday claimed to have killed two militants of Lashkar-e-Toiba, hailing from Kerala, in separate encounters in Kupwara district in north Kashmir.
They were killed after the police received a specific input about the movement of a militant group in the area. They were planning to sneak across the Line of Control. “The documents we recovered from one of the slain militants after a fierce 36-hour gun battle at Marg Darpora village indicate that they hail from Kerala,” said Inspector General of Police, Kashmir range, Balaji Srinivas. “The duo were associated with the LeT and we are in touch with Kerala police to ascertain their real identity.”

Police sources say an identity card recovered identified one of the militants as Shakeel Mohammad of 383 Chowk Kovalam, Kerala. Police also recovered some literature in Malayalam from his possession. One AK rifle with two magazines, 52 rounds of ammunition and a pouch was also recovered from the encounter site.

Another militant was also killed in the nearby forest area but they are yet to establish his identity even as the police have information that he too was part of a group of five militants from Kerala who had come to the border district to cross over to PoK. Police have launched a massive search to trace the three militants who are at large.

Sex education kicks up row in Kerala

Punjab says no to sex education

Keywords: College Magazine, Kerala

Thrissur: The in-house magazine of a college in Kerala has got into some hot water over its efforts at promoting safe sex. The magazine cover has a picture of four children looking at a poster of a couple making love.

Students Federation of India (SFI) – the students’ branch of the CPI-M - who published the magazine, maintain it was their way of spreading sexual awareness and reinforcing the need to respect “womanhood” in campus.

Everyone only noticed the sexual posture in the cover page. But nobody noticed the photo of four young children who watch the scene. We have given the articles on sex deviations and the excess use of mobile phones,” says college chairman T M Shinoj.

But the management, who also happen to be the clergy, was scandalised.

“We were never given a chance to see the manuscript. We have asked them to change at least the cover page if they want to circulate it. We cannot allow such liberties in an institution like this,” says college principal Devassy Panthalukkaran .

The Congress-backed Kerala Students Union (KSU) is also up in arms. KSU President, M Peter, says, “The students have openly protested against such a magazine. They take it to their homes only after removing the cover page. Such a thing should not happen again, so we have registered a case.”

The Thrissur Munsif court has sent notices to everyone who had a role in bringing out the magazine, including the college principal.

Two killed in mosque violence

Pioneer News Service | Malappuram
Saturday, August 30, 2008

Two persons killed and fourteen others suffered injuries in the violence at the Juma Masjid at Aalinkunnu, Kottakkal in Malappuram district on Friday afternoon. The incident was the result of a conflict between the two sections of the faithful who had come to the mosque for the Juma Namaz on Friday. The dead were brothers and had been identified as Abdu and Aboobacker, sons of Muhammad Haji, Pulikkal.

Abdu died at a private hospital in Kottakkal while Aboobacker succumbed

to hack injuries at the Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode. District Superintendent of Police P Vijayan has started an inquiry into the incident. Vijayan said the violence was the result of a conflict between two sections over the control of the Mahallu committee. A large number of police personnel had been posted at the mosque to avoid any further violence.

Pulikkal Muhammad Haji had been the president of the Mahallu Committee for the past several years, and he had recently stepped down from the post following

complaints and protests from one section.

The issue had been live for the past many days in the mosque and the Mahallu. The police said this had led to the tension on Friday.

Are you lying, court asks CBI in nun’s murder case
Published: Wednesday, 27 August, 2008, 01:31 AM Doha Time

Abhaya… mystery continues
By Ashraf Padanna

KOCHI: After 16 years of investigations, the Central Bureau of Investigation is still groping in the dark over the death of a nun.
The country’s premier investigative agency says Sister Abhaya was murdered but admits there is no evidence to nail the killers. It says even narco-analysis tests have failed.
Yesterday, Kerala High Court asked the CBI: “Are you lying to the court on the actual number of CDs of the narco-analysis test (on two Christian priests and a nun at Abhaya’s convent)?”

A message that the court received from Lal Mohan Choudhary, director of the Bangalore-based Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) says three CDs containing details of the tests on the three suspects, copies of which are now with the court, were sent to the CBI headquarters in New Delhi.
But the CBI team led by deputy superintendent of police R K Aggarwal told the court that the agency received only one CD. He also produced the letter that the CBI received along with the CD to prove his point.
The court had asked the Delhi-based officer to appear before it in view of ‘certain subsequent developments.’ The CBI had earlier informed the court that though the agency had obtained ‘sufficient clues’ about the killers, it was not sufficient to arraign them as defendants in the case.
After viewing the three CDs sent by the CFSL, Justice V Ramkumar observed that it contained more information than the one produced by the CBI.
CFSL director later told a television channel that he would produce all the details of the narco tests in the court today.
Sister Abhaya was a member of St Joseph’s Congregation for women under the Catholic diocese of Kottayam and was a student of the church-run B C M College and residing at Pious X Hostel. She was found dead on March 27, 1992.
The CBI concluded in November 1996 that the death was a homicide but the murderer remained untraced. The Kerala police earlier dismissed the case as suicide.
Three previous CBI teams have failed to crack the mystery “because the evidence has been destroyed during investigations by the state police earlier.”
The case was revived last in April last year after a newspaper reported that Abhaya’s medical reports were tampered with at the Chemical Examiners Laboratory in Thiruvananthapuram.

Two officials of the laboratory, who allegedly tampered with the report, are currently on bail.

In a related development, the court asked social activist Joemon Puthenpurackal to keep off the case. Puthenpurackal was largely instrumental in reopening the case after he last year urged the CBI authorities to send a new team to reinvestigate the case.

Suicide attempt by orphanage inmates another headache for Church
25/08/2008 18:55:37 Pioneer News Service | Kollam

The suicide attempt by two girls of the Nithya Sahaya Matha Balika Mandiram (orphanage for girls) associated with a convent in Kottiyam in Kollam has put the Catholic Church diocese in a tight spot even before the storm created by the recent suicide of a nun is yet to settle. The Balika Mandiram is a unit of the same Holy Cross order in which Sr Anupa (22), the nun who committed suicide on August 11 at the St Mary's Convent, Port, Kollam.

Kottiyam police have registered a case against apprentice priest Benedict of the Thiruvananthapuram diocese on the basis of the complaints by girls who attempted to commit suicide on Saturday night. The police would question him on the basis of testimony of these two girls and another who had received counselling from Benedict.

The girls told the police that Benedict had given counselling for an hour to the three girls on Saturday and during this he had accused them of having a time of bad conduct. The girls said he had insisted that they should admit to having had such a conduct as he had come to know this through a revelation. The girls also said that Benedict had talked in a humiliating tone to them.

The girls, who after consuming poison and had been admitted to the hospital ICU run by the church on Saturday, were discharged in the afternoon. They said that they were restless after Benedict made this statement and so they had consumed poison out of humiliation.

Justice D Sreedevi, chairperson of the Kerala State Women's Commission, had tried to see the girls but was not allowed. She had then met the third girl and learnt that the apprentice priest had given them counselling by putting his hand on their foreheads. The girl had told her that he had only said that he just asked them to live as good girls.

"I could not believe that," Sreedevi said. "That the two girls had tried to commit suicide just because somebody gave them counselling cannot be believed. Also, this was no counselling if what the girl said was true," she said. The convent authorities said the apprentice priest had done nothing wrong to the girls. The mother superior of the convent that looked after the Balika Sadanam said they were only helping girls from collapsed families. Both the girls were from very poor backgrounds.

The police have charged a case for provoking the girls to commit suicide against the apprentice priest. The convent authorities said there had been no previous complaints against Benedict from anywhere.

They said the girls had tried to commit suicide perhaps due to their immature minds. The police said they were viewing the matter with utmost seriousness. There would be a thorough interrogation on Benedict, they said. Such incidents could not be tolerated, the police added.

Meanwhile, demands have come up from several quarters for a thorough probe into the goings on in convents under the Kollam diocese in the light of the two incidents. It is alleged that the church and convent authorities were trying to hide something in the case of the suicide attempt of the two girls.

The fact that the Women's Commission chairperson could not meet the girls proved this, it is said. There are also complaints that the Kottiyam police was trying to help the diocese.

The Kollam diocese of the Catholic Church was already in a tight spot after the suicide of Sr Anupa, a nun who had been ordained just three months ago, due to alleged harassments and torture, including lesbian sexual abuse by the mother superior of the convent where she was an internee. Anupa was a nun of the Vimala Hridaya Franciscan Sisters coming under the Holy Cross congregation. The Balika Sadanam also belonged to the same order.

Police questioned and tortured many RSS activists day and night as per the instructions from Communist party office. As the case dragged on Police couldn’t find any evidence to charge any RSS activists. Finally due to severe pressure from all quarters Kodiyeri directed the Police to arrest three CPM activist and to close the case before the skeletons start to fall from the roof.

Now the very same case is directed for a CBI Enquiry by Kerala High Court. Although every thing seems to be just part of usual Communist politics of wiping out their opponents, there is much more to this case .

This is an ample example of how vicious a Communist Brain will act to create troubles among two communities for their own selfish gains at the expense of Human Blood

Communist Conspiracy

1)By planting Thrishul they succeeded to evoke the suitable response from NDF against RSS

2) A Statement from Home Minister itself about RSS cemented their belief that RSS is behind this murder

3) Communist party believed after this Murder there will be Communal riot in the area.

4) During that Communal riot Communist party can come up as saviours of Muslims and attack Hindus

5) By that they can annihilate the Hindus opposing them and can win the hearts of Muslims

All these at the expense of cornering Hindus!!

Why the Conspiracy Failed ?

1) Apart from planting Thrishul, CPI(M) couldn’t plant other material evidences enough to prove the false charges of murder on Hindu activists

2) Communist party dreamt of immediate riots after the murder and statement of Home Minister, So that in the ensuing chaos there won’t be any need for other evidences in that particular murder

3) NDF – was not prepared for a Communal riot especially in Kannur at that time, as they know it will backfire on them

4) Although NDF and Communist party tempted Hindu organisations by issuing provoking slogans and statements, the remarkable restraint shown by Sangh leadership prevented the state from slipping into a Communal riot as anticipated by the ruling Communist party

Public started to realize the true colours of the Marxist party all over India and this issue is an ample example on how much they can denigrate themselves for petty selfish gains in Politics. It is crystal clear that the whole episode happened with full knowledge and support of Home Minister.Kodiyeri Balakrishnan may be the first and last Home Minister in a state who conspired to foment communal riots in his own state.

Sunday, January 6, 2008 (Thiruvananthapuram)

The suspected Hizbul Mujahideen activist arrested from Kumali in Kerala's Idukki district had terrorist links, state Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has said.

The information gathered by the state police from Jammu and Kashmir authorities showed that Altaf Ahamad Khan, arrested last night, was wanted in connection with several cases relating to terrorist activities, Balakrishnan told a press meet.

Altaf had been staying in the tourist town for about five years and was suspected to have made trips to Jammu and Kashmir during this period. The police has also recovered an identity card in which his name was written as Muhammad Ahammad Butt.

In view of the development, police has been asked to step up vigil across the state with special focus on tourist centres and work sites that engage migrant labourers in large numbers, he said.

He said there had been intelligence reports that terrorists were making Kerala as a hiding place, making use of the tourism boom in the state. A top People's War Group (PWG) leader was also arrested from Ernakulam district recently.

To tackle the menace, the intelligence wing of the state police has stepped up interaction and sharing of information with its counterparts in other states.

House Church run by Salem Voice Ministries demolished by Muslim extremists
By Michael Ireland

An underground house church of Salem Voice Ministries was demolished by Muslim extremists at Sunnam Potty in Malabar, India on December 29.

A mob of 10 to 15 people came by cars and vans with spades, pick axes, iron bars and other tools and weapons and totally demolished the church on Saturday night. The attackers are suspected to be activists of SIMI (Students Islamic Movement of India).

In the last few months around 50 people have been attending the church every week for worship services. The majority were individual Muslim youngsters from various families.

A baptism service was held early on Saturday morning, during which eight young people and three couples were baptized. Although it was a secret service, the news somehow leaked out. It is believed that might have provoked the extremists to demolish the church.

The church building was leased from a believer’s family without any rent. The family that owns the building lives a distance away from the churh location. In recent days they have been threatened by unknown people for giving this house to be used for prayer and worship.

Pastor Mildad and his family, who are ministering in this area, are facing death threats.

Pastor Paul Ciniraj, Director of the Salem Voice Ministries, visited the demolished church. He condemned the incident and requested prayer for the pastor and his family, the owner of the house and his family, and the believers who gather there.

CPM workers barge into Press Club, manhandle scribes

Pioneer News Service | Malapuram

The intolerance of the Marxists in the State against truth was exposed on Wednesday when CPI(M) activists barged into the Press Club here and attacked mediamen. Six newspersons suffered injuries in the attack by the Marxists prompted by their intolerance towards reports about the rampant divisionism that was reflected at the party's Malappuram district conference, which concluded here on Wednesday.

The comrades who had come for the conference rushed to the Press Club after reports came out in the media, especially the visual media, that faction fights at the meet had led to voting to decide the district committee members and the district secretary. Scores of CPI(M) activists barged into the Press Club and attacked cameramen of TV channels and TV and newspaper reporters present there without waiting to hear the explanations offered by the journalists.

In protest, newsmen informed the party leaders that they would not cover the conference proceedings and would not attend the Press conferences by the leaders who were eagerly waiting to talk to the Press. The issue was settled later after the intervention of senior leaders like TK Hamza. Hamza and other senior leaders pleaded with the mediamen to be calm and to consider the outrage as a mere expression of the sentiments of the comrades.

This is not for the first time that the comrades were turning against mediamen at Malappuram during party conferences. During the last State conference of the party in February 2005 here, the comrades had tried to manhandle certain newsmen for their reports on divisionism, which had then reached the level of 'selected leaks' to the media and even espionage activities including phone tapping by rivals.

After a group war-propelled voting, accompanied by loud voices of allegations and counter-allegations, the conference selected neo-liberalist K Ummer Master as the district secretary of the party rejecting the proposals in favour of the hardliners' choice, TK Hamza. Hamza later told newsmen that voting had indeed been held but this was no sign of divisionism. "Election is a democratic process, and it cannot be interpreted as a sign of divisionism," he said.

Ummer Master is a loyalist of party State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan, who leads the neo-liberalist faction in the CPI(M) against the hardliners led by Politburo member and Chief Minister VS Achuthanandan. K Saidalikkutty, the outgoing 82-year-old secretary, was a consensus candidate for continuing in the post, but he wanted to quit due to ill-health. When the Pinarayi faction proposed the name of Ummer Master in this context, the VS-loyalists wanted Hamza to be in the chair. Discussions at various levels since morning till late afternoon could not produce a consensus and a voting was necessitated.

The end result was that the neo-liberalists conquered the district committee in a conference process, which nobody, not even those inside the party, had expected to see overt signs of divisionism. The election process, which is always seen as a crisis of organisational discipline in the Marxist party, helped the Pinarayi faction get the control of the district committee with the only two candidates - A Sivadasan and MP Alavi - from the Achuthanandan faction getting defeated. But VS loyalists said that they were only making their protest against 'undemocratic' tendencies obvious with the full knowledge that their men were not going to get into the committee. This was the first voting in the ongoing district conferences.

The protests from the VS faction were sparked by the proposal of the Pinarayi group of the name of M Swaraj, SFI State secretary, known to be close to the party secretary, to the district committee. Swaraj did get into the committee but the slender margin with which he achieved that showed how much he was being disliked, even by members of his own group. Two other leaders from the same group, KP Anil, Malappuram district secretary of the DYFI, and TM Siddique, Ponnani area secretary of the party, also got into the district committee. The three men replaced VPS Nambeesan, Assain Karad and K Bappu.

Early morning had given the hope that the selection of members to the 35-strong district committee would be a smooth affair as the selection of 25 delegates for the State conference had taken place unanimously. But the feigned calm was disturbed once the name of Swaraj came up to the district committee.

Though there were several feuds going on in the district unit of the party, nobody had expected a divisionist posture of this magnitude. Actually, the Malappuram conference was supposed to be the calmest of all the meets so far, but once the placidness was broken not even senior leaders like Pinarayi, VS and others could do anything to control the fury of the comrades.

CPI-M activists evict Kerala tribal families

Thiruvananthapuram • In a Nadigram-style operation minus the violence, Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM) activists drove out tribal people from Government land atop the Munnar hills today, thwarting their move for a permanent settlement.

Tribal families, who had pitched tents on 1,500 acres allotted to Hindustan Newsprint for its captive plantation at Chinnakkanal, were caught unawares as the CPM cadres staged the takeover operation this morning. The activists, backed by local party reinforcements later in the day, tore down tents and put party flags, declaring the success of the operation.

Local people said tension prevailed in the area since tribal activists have threatened to recover the land and not to leave until the Government honored its commitment to distribute land to all landless Adivasi families in the State.

Tribal families, including children, had occupied the land under the banner of the Adivasi Punaradhivasa Samrakshana Samithy (tribal rehabilitation protection committee).

The provocation had come as the fallout of the deal struck between Chief Minister AK Antony and tribal leader C K Janu. At a grand function, Antony distributed title-deeds but only 540 families out of the 798 families got the land.

“They had waited for more than five years for the land. The Government had forced them to resort to direct action. They have run out of patience and there’s no question of returning without getting the land”, said tribal solidarity leader C P Shaji.

However, the local CPM leaders alleged that Congress and Communist Party of India had instigated the tribal people to occupy Government land so they could grab the land once the dust settled.

Tribal agitation has traversed a chequered course in Kerala. Janu had led many families on a 48-day sit-in in front of the Government Secretariat soon after Antony came to power in 2001.

The agitation ended with Antony agreeing to a seven-point demand, mainly five acres to each landless tribal family and a rehabilitation package to ensure that the land was not alienated.

However, the pact suffered a setback after Janu led a tribal band to the Muthanga wildlife sanctuary in the northern Wynad district two years later, leading to deaths a policeman and a tribal youth.

The most important fallout of agitations has been that both the Government and the tribal activists succeeded in shifting the focus of the nearly 50-year-old tribal struggle in Kerala from the issue of “restoration of alienated land” to one of “land for the landless tribal people”.

In April 1975, Kerala Assembly unanimously adopted the Kerala Scheduled Tribes (Restriction on Transfer of Lands and Restoration of Alienated Lands) Act, which sought to prevent the lands of the tribal people from falling into the hands of non-tribal people. The Act also sought to restore to the tribal people their previously alienated lands.

But that has remained mostly on paper.
