Couple stoned to death in Fata
By Our Correspondent

GHALANAI, April 1: A man and a woman were stoned to death by militants in Khwezai-Baezai area on Monday after a ‘qazi court’ found them guilty of adultery.

This is the first incident of Rajam (stoning to death) carried out in Fata. Earlier, couples found guilty of adultery by militants or tribesmen were executed by firing squads.

The woman, identified as Shano from Mohmand Agency, had allegedly eloped with Daulat Khan Malikdeenkhel of Bara on March 15.

Dr Asad, a spokesman for the militants, told Dawn that Shano was a married woman living in Peshawar’s Deen Bahar colony.

He said a complaint had been received from her family that she had been abducted by Daulat Khan. But later it was reported that she had eloped with him.

He said that some members of the Taliban movement captured them in Nowshera when they were returning from Karachi.

He said the qazi found the couple guilty of adultery and sentenced them to death by stoning and the sentence was carried out in Khwaezai-Baezai, about 40 kms west of the Mohmand Agency’s headquarters Ghalanai.

The body of the woman was laid to rest in the same area by some local people. The man’s body was taken to the hospital and handed over to his relatives.

Norway investigating reports that alleged Iranian adulterer stoned

Oslo (dpa) - Norway was Monday investigating reports that an Iranian national has been stoned to death for alleged adultery, news reports said.

Members of the Stop Stoning Forever campaign in Iran, citing "credible sources" have told Norwegian media that the man, identified as Jafar Keyiani, was stoned Thursday in Takestan, western Iran.

Norwegian ambassador to Tehran, Ole Kristian Holthe, was Monday seeking confirmation of the stoning and contacting other Western embassies to organize a joint protest if it had in fact happened, he told Norwegian news agency NTB.

Last month, Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Store summoned the Iranian ambassador to Oslo to convey his concern over "credible" reports that two Iranian nationals faced stoning.

Mokarrameh Ebrahimi, a mother of three, and her alleged partner Keyiani, have been held in prison for 11 years.

After his meeting with the Iranian ambassador, Store issued a statement stating that "stoning is a barbaric punishment that clearly violates Iran's commitments to human rights."

Oslo also said a long-planned visit by Norwegian parliamentarians, including the head of the foreign affairs committee Olav Akselsen, would be cancelled if the stoning had been carried out.

Shortly after the ambassador's June 20 meeting with Store, Iranian justice officials said the stoning had been halted although it was not clear how long the reprieve was and the Norwegian parliamentarians' visit to Iran went ahead.

Several human rights groups including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch had earlier issued protests against the plans.
