The Khaerwadi police on Friday arrested Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray, after a sessions court had directed it to execute a bailable warrant against him following a complaint over an article that allegedly incited communal hatred.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Zone (VIII) R.N. Tadvi confirmed of Thackeray being arrested by the Kherwadi police at his resident Matoshree in Kala Nagar, on Friday afternoon at around 2 pm He was also immediately released on a personal bond of Rs 10,000. The orders to arrest was passed by sessions Judge S J Shah, on Thursday in which it directed the police to execute the bailable warrant against Thackeray.

The warrant was first issued on February 8, 2007 by a magistrate at Railway Mobile Court in Andheri after an NCP activist, Munna Tripathi, filed a case against Thackeray for an article he wrote in the Shiv Sena mouthpiece Saamna on June 21, 2006. Tripathi alleged that the language used by Thackeray was provocative and aimed at inciting communal hatred.

However, Thackeray failed to appear before the magistrate thrice despite being issued summons each time. Finally, the court had issued a bailable warrant against the Sena chief ordering him to come before it to get it executed. Thackeray’s lawyers then moved a sessions court asking for the warrant to be quashed.
