Car rams Scottish airport, explodes after London bombs

GLASGOW, Scotland, June 30 (Reuters) - A four-wheel-drive vehicle rammed into Glasgow airport's main terminal on Saturday and exploded in flames in what police described as an attack, a day after a twin car-bomb plot was foiled in London.

A Glasgow police spokeswoman said two people were arrested following the incident. Witnesses described those arrested as Asian men and said one of them was badly burnt.

Scottish police said they were not immediately connecting the attack to the foiled car bombs in London.

However, Prime Minister Gordon Brown's office said he would chair a meeting of Britain's top security committee later on Saturday to discuss events in Glasgow. The committee was also convened on Friday following the thwarted London plot.

In Kennebunkport, Maine, the United States announced it was boosting security at airports nationwide, although the overall U.S. terrorism threat level would remain the same.

From Glasgow, witnesses told the BBC the vehicle, a Land Rover or a Jeep Cherokee, exploded shortly after crashing into the glass front doors of the terminal, and said there was a heavy stench of petrol.

"It raced across the central reservation and went straight into the building," said taxi driver Ian Crosby outside the terminal.

Crosby said a stocky Asian man had got out of the car and was quickly wrestled to the ground by bystanders.

"It would appear to me to have been a deliberate attack. I think this was a terrorist attack," Crosby said.

Another witness said the occupants of the car had got out of the vehicle after they rammed it into the building and taken out cans of petrol that they then used to douse the car, before it went up in flames.

The airport was shut down following the incident.

In London, police scoured hours of CCTV footage and extra squads were deployed on the streets, particularly around landmarks such as the Houses of Parliament after Friday's failed car bomb attacks in the centre of the city.

An intensive counter-terrorism investigation was launched after the discovery in the early hours of Friday of a metallic green Mercedes packed with up to 60 litres of fuel, several gas canisters and a large quantity of nails.

A mobile phone, which security experts believed might have been a detonation device, was left inside the fume-filled car.

A second Mercedes packed with gas and nails was later found to have been parked just a few hundred yards from the first.

Police said the two vehicles were clearly linked. Both bombs were quickly defused but, had they gone off, would have caused significant injuries and deaths, police said.

The foiled plot came to light two years after a coordinated attack by suicide bombers on London's transport system killed 52 commuters. It appeared to have similarities to an earlier plot in which an al Qaeda militant planned to blow up gas-filled bombs inside limousines in London.

Plans for policing of public events in the coming 10 days were reviewed to ensure public security, including a Gay Pride parade in London on Saturday, the Wimbledon tennis tournament and a concert for Princess Diana on Sunday.

"Appropriate policing will be in place for all events," a police spokeswoman said. "Safety and security is our number one priority."

Despite the continuing threat, tourists were stoical.

"You could be safe anywhere or you could be safe nowhere. It hasn't put me off travelling here," said Ivonne Geller, 49, a tourist from Mexico strolling outside the Tiger Tiger club.

"I just feel angry about the methods of these people who try to harm innocent people."

Intelligence sources believe there is a growing probability the London plot was hatched by an al Qaeda-style group.

"The feeling it is Islamist, rather than the other possibilities, is very quietly growing stronger," a source said.

The area of London where the car bombs were left, known as Haymarket, is one of the busiest in the capital and one of the most intensely monitored by CCTV surveillance. (Additional reporting by Luke Baker)

Uganda, LRA rebels sign third stage of peace deal

Uganda violence
By Tim Cocks

KAMPALA, June 30 (Reuters) - Uganda's government and Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) rebels have signed an agreement on how to deal with war crimes in the third phase of talks to end one of Africa's worst conflicts, the rebels said on Saturday.

The signing, at negotiations in southern Sudan, was a major development in an intended five-stage peace deal aiming to end two decades of violence in north Uganda.

"We signed the agreement on reconciliation and accountability late last night, which moves us one step closer to a final peace agreement," Martin Ojul, head of the LRA delegation in Sudan, told Reuters by telephone.

Talks between the two sides started last July, raising hopes of an end to a war that has caused tens of thousands of deaths and forced nearly two million refugees into camps that aid workers say are among most squalid in the world.

Progress had been slow since a truce signed in August, with the LRA frequently walking out of talks, but have since picked up pace. Last month, the two sides signed the second stage of the deal, breaking months of deadlock.

The third phase is supposed to set out principles for dealing with war criminals -- a thorny subject for a rebel group notorious for beating civilians to death, mutilating victims and kidnapping children.

LRA leader Joseph Kony and three other top commanders are wanted in the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague and have vowed never to quit their Congolese jungle hideouts unless the court drops the indictments.

Ugandan government officials were unavailable for comment, and the document was not immediately available. Ojul said it set out a framework for dealing with war crimes under Uganda's own law that they hoped would appease judges in the ICC.

"The agreement is about putting mechanisms in place under national law. We can take it to the ICC and say 'look: we are dealing with accountability'," he said.

Analysts say the trial of Liberian former president and warlord Charles Taylor in a special tribunal, also in The Hague, has shaken up the LRA leadership.

The LRA says the ICC indictments are too one-sided and fail to acknowledge crimes committed by government forces.

Leaders from Kony's Acholi tribe want him and his associates to undergo a traditional reconciliation ritual in which the murderer faces relatives of the victim and admits his crime before both drink a bitter brew made from a tree root.

Rights groups say such a method would condone impunity.

"There's nothing we signed that explicitly deals with punishment," Ojul said. "It is trying to find a way of dealing with war crimes locally. We don't see the ICC as appropriate."

One of the world's most neglected crises

A brutal, two-decade insurgency by a cult-like rebel group in northern Uganda has created what the United Nations calls one of the world's most neglected humanitarian crises. The Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) rebels, notorious for massacring civilians and slicing off the lips of survivors, have abducted thousands of children for use as soldiers and sex slaves. Almost the entire population of the region is crowded into squalid settlements where they are vulnerable to disease and attacks.

More than 20,000 children kidnapped
Some 1.7 million people uprooted into camps
Violence and disease kills 1,000 people a week

The conflict has threatened to destabilise the volatile central African region as rebels seek shelter in neighbouring countries and violence spills across borders.

Hopes for lasting peace were raised after a landmark truce brokered in August 2007 by neighbouring south Sudan, often a haven for the rebels, brought relative stability to the war-weary north.

But the fact that international arrest warrants hang over top LRA officials is an enduring obstacle.

Violence also plagues Uganda's northeastern Karamoja region, where an influx of small arms has exacerbated banditry and cattle raiding. Karamoja often suffers from drought and food shortages, with more than half a million people receiving aid in 2007.

Younger Generation Turning To Yoga Classes
POSTED: 3:43 pm CDT June 29, 2007
UPDATED: 5:49 pm CDT June 29, 2007

DALLAS -- A much younger generation has found a new way to exercise -- yoga classes. Parents say it has helped their children in their commitment to be fit. For one boy, it has served as an alternative to medication.

Jake Ferguson, 11, is taking yoga mixed with other focus-enhancing exercises in an attempt to overcome occasionally severe anxiety, and the focusing and breathing is working.

He and his mom credit instructor Jeff Farrell for the success.

Farrell has studied all over the world, and taught at Yale University and for the French government. He said yoga, tailor-made for individual kids, can improve focus, control breathing and reduce anxiety, and said the skills don't stay in the studio.

"They have the tools to take this to school, to take this with interaction with friends, with their own personal decisions," Farrell said.

Jake’s mom, Liz, first took him to a psychiatrist, who wanted to put him on medication. That made her nervous.

"I didn't want him to change his personality, very outgoing has lots of personality," she said.

So far, Jake is doing great and looks forward to yoga almost as much as basketball -- a result that has Farrell convinced that yoga can be a good alternative to a pill for kids.

"Oh, this is the future," Jake said.

Norway cracks down on female circumcision abroad
Fri 29 Jun 2007, 13:48 GMT

[-] Text [+] OSLO, June 29 (Reuters) - Norway took steps on Friday to crack down on circumcision of girls by barring families from travelling abroad if officials suspect they plan to have the procedure done outside the country.

The intervention followed reports in Norwegian media that at least 185 girls from Norway -- daughters of immigrants -- had their genitals cut in just one village in Somalia.

The government said it would refuse passports to families suspected of sending girls abroad to have the procedure carried out. Authorities can also forbid a family from travelling if they suspect the purpose is female circumcision, officials said.

"Today's decision is about how to prevent children from being subject to genital mutilation," Astri Aas-Hansen, a senior official at the Ministry of Justice and Police, told Reuters.

"This is violence," she said.

Justice Minister Knut Storgberget told Norwegian NTB newswire that officials would not block people from travelling based only on their skin colour or destination. "The authorities must have concrete suspicions that circumcision is planned to be able to deny a passport," he said.

Genital cutting, sometimes referred to as female genital mutilation or circumcision, is banned in Norway and arouses widespread horror in the West but is a rite of passage for young women in many countries, predominantly in Africa.

It also occurs in some Middle Eastern countries, such as Saudi Arabia, in some immigrant communities in Europe and North America and in parts of Asia, including Indonesia.

The practice usually involves removing part or all of the clitoris and other parts of the female genitalia. Many of the practitioners are untrained and use crude instruments, making the practice life-threatening.

The Norwegian government is also considering mandatory check-ups for girls to weed out the practice.

In the last three years, Oslo's university hospital has treated 260 children and women for health problems tied to genital mutilation, some as young as 10 or 11 years old.

A Muslim priest in Kashmir's Hindu temple
Vivek Suri
27 June 2007, Wednesday

The age-old harmony between Hindus and Muslims in Kashmir is still alive and demonstrated by people like Ghulam Mohammad Shiekh, who has been performing the duties of a priest in a famous Shiva temple for the last 17 years.

IN THIS MILITANCY stricken valley, where some ‘outsiders’ are leaving no stone unturned to widen the divide between Muslims and Hindus, a Muslim has been looking after a Shiva temple for the last 17 years. By uttering verses from the Quran and shlokas from the Gita with same fluency and devotion everyday, he presents a unique example of secularism and communal harmony in Kashmir.

Ghulam Mohammad Shiekh is the priest of the 92-year old Shiva temple at Gulmarg. The temple houses a Shiv Lingam and idol of Goddess Parvati. Everyday Shiekh performs all the rituals of a pujari including performing aarti and distributing prasad among devotees, who throng this ancient temple in big numbers, especially in summers when the place comes alive.

For him there is no difference between ‘Allah’ and ‘Bhagwan’. Being a Muslim he never forgets to perform namaz daily.

How a Muslim became the ‘pujari’ of a temple?

Shiekh’s father Gulam Rasool Shiekh was the Chowkidar of the temple and he rendered his services for about 40 years. Due to militancy when Kashmiri Pandits fled Kashmir, the temple was left abandoned; Shiekh started performing the duties of a pujari. From that point of time he has been looking after all the affairs related to the famous temple.

Shiekh had to pay the price for becoming the priest of temple. It was not an easy task for him. He was targeted by terrorists many a times in past, who threatened him to leave the job of priest. He was once kidnapped by the ultras, but it was his sheer good luck that he was released later on by them.

About the temple

This Shiva temple was actually the royal temple of Dogra kings of Jammu and Kashmir.

Also known as "Rani Temple" or "Maharani Temple", this is situated on a small hillock in the centre of Gulmarg. The unique thing about this royal temple is the fact that it can be seen from all the corners of Gulmarg. The Maharani temple also known as Mohineshwar Shivalalaya was built by Mohini Bai Sisodhia, the wife of the erstwhile ruler of Kashmir Maharaja Hari Singh (the last king of Kashmir) in 1915. Mohini Bai Sisodhia was the daughter of Maharaja Mohandev of Dharampur. When the last Dogra king was spending his time in Gulmarg in his royal palace, a couple of kilometers from the temple, his queen used to come here to worship Lord Shiva. Infact, she stayed here for months and worshiped Lord Shiva in this temple.

The temple remains open everyday from 6am to 9pm. Aarti is performed twice a day for devotees.

The Dagger Division, headquartered at Baramulla renovated the temple in 1998. Now this is being managed by the Jammu and Kashmir Dharmarth Trust headed by Dr Karan Singh, son of Maharaja Hari Singh.

Hamas TV Kills Off Mickey Mouse Double
GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip — A Mickey Mouse lookalike who preached Islamic domination on a Hamas-affiliated children's television program was beaten to death in the show's final episode Friday.

In the final skit, "Farfour" was killed by an actor posing as an Israeli official trying to buy Farfour's land. At one point, the mouse called the Israeli a "terrorist."

"Farfour was martyred while defending his land," said Sara, the teen presenter. He was killed "by the killers of children," she added.

The weekly show, featuring a giant black-and-white rodent with a high-pitched voice, had attracted worldwide attention because the character urged Palestinian children to fight Israel. It was broadcast on Hamas-affiliated Al Aqsa TV.

Station officials said Friday that Farfour was taken off the air to make room for new programs. Station manager Mohammed Bilal said he did not know what would be shown instead.

Israeli officials have denounced the program, "Tomorrow's Pioneers," as incendiary and outrageous. The program was also opposed by the state-run Palestinian Broadcasting Corp., which is controlled by Fatah, Hamas' rival.

Hindu followers doubled Down Under
27 Jun, 2007 l 1020 hrs ISTlPTI

MELBOURNE: The number of followers of Hinduism in Australia has doubled since 1996 and now they comprise 0.7 per cent of the total population, a latest census data said.

The latest data from the 2006 census, released on Wednesday by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), confirmed this and revealed that the followers of Buddhism have also doubled to more than two per cent of the population. Islam followers accounted for 1.7 per cent and Judaism 0.4 per cent.

Christianity, however, remained the dominant religion. It grew slightly, from 12.6 million followers to 12.7 million but fell as a proportion of the population from 71 per cent to 64 per cent.

Almost 19 per cent of Australians said they had no religion.

According to the survey data, for every 100 women in Australia, there are 97 men.

Marriage is still the norm for couples, although married couples now account for a lower share of the population than they did in 1996 - down from 53.3 per cent to 49.6 per cent.

The survey conducted on 19,855,289 locals on August 8 last year also revealed that Australians are earning more, Hinduism is growing and women do more chores than men.

Keep off Iraq militancy, Saudi warns its clerics
Published Date: June 21, 2007

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia's Interior Minister has warned the conservative Islamic state's clergy that they should discourage Saudis, including their own children, from going to fight in Iraq. In a speech before hundreds of clerics, Prince Nayef bin Abdul-Aziz appeared to suggest that some members of Saudi Arabia's powerful religious establishment had not doing enough in the fight against militants who are warring against Western influence in the region. "Do you know that your sons who go to Iraq are used only for blowing themselves up? Iraqi officials told me that themselves," the leading member of the royal family said in comments carried by state media.

"They are brought to put on explosive belts or blow themselves up in cars ... Innocents die. Are you happy for your children to become instruments of murder?" he added. There have been reports in Saudi Arabia about sons of some prominent Saudi clerics trying to get into Iraq to join al Qaeda insurgents fighting US forces and the US-backed Iraqi government.

Authorities often cite the danger of Saudi militants returning to the kingdom to join militants who have led a campaign of suicide bombings and attacks against government installations, energy sites and foreigners since 2003. Around 264 people have died in the violence, which has tailed off since a failed attempt in February 2006 to storm a major oil facility in Abqaiq.

In April the government announced the arrest of 172 men who were described as being part of a major plot to revive the militant campaign, involving men and money from Islamists fighting in Iraq. "You have a big responsibility and you must shoulder it. We must feel your work and effort on the ground. You will be rewarded by God and everyone in this country will thank you, not least its rulers," Prince Nayef said.

The minister, who maintains close links with the religious establishment, reminded the preachers of the historic alliance between the royal family and Saudi Arabia's austere Wahhabi school of Sunni Islam. Saudi Arabia imposes strict Islamic law, overseen by clerics with wide influence in society. Clerics back the royal family as absolute rulers. The government allows no political parties and thanks to high oil revenues does not impose taxes. "Preventive measures have foiled over 90 percent of the actions of these errant people," he said.

"Let's imagine that they had succeeded with 30 percent of their acts ... We would be in a very bad situation, one we wouldn't even wish for our enemies," he added, citing violent civil conflicts in Muslim countries. - Reuters

Christian man assaulted for refusing to convert
Friday, 29th June 2007. 12:55pm

By: Paolo Gallini.

A YOUNG Christian man in Pakistan has allegedly been gang-raped for refusing to convert to Islam.

The pressure group Release International said today that lawyers in Pakistan are investigating the claim, adding that the man, who has not been named, is seriously injured and unable to move.

However, the claim has not been registered by local police because of a counter-claim against the victim by one of the 30 perpetrators. They have, however, detained him and his supporters say he is being denied medical treatment.

According to the Centre for Legal Aid Assistance and Settlement (CLAAS) the man had been invited to take part in a game of cricket, but following a quarrel he was beaten up. Later that night he was invited to the home of one of his attackers.

Joseph Francis, the National Director of CLAAS, takes up the story: “When he entered the drawing room, he found it filled with unknown people. They began to beat him severely. They threatened him with dire consequences if he did not accept Islam. After his refusal, they committed sodomy with him one by one for the whole night.”

CLAAS say they have visited the victim and his family. They believe the counter accusation that he stole money and a mobile phone is false. They say the charges were drawn up by the attacker, who has used his influence to put pressure on the authorities.

“We’re deeply concerned about the growing number of attacks against Christians in Pakistan,” says Release International’s CEO Andy Dipper. “We are receiving reports of rape, abductions and forced conversion. Pakistan is becoming an increasingly difficult place for Christians to live.”

They add that legislation is currently being promoted that would impose the death penalty on any man, and life imprisonment on any woman, who converts to Christianity.

Sivaganga Municipal chief among 2 killed in bomb explosion

Sivaganga (TN), June 29: Two persons, including Sivaganga municipality chairman P Murugan, were killed and 10 injured when a powerful bomb blast ripped through his car in front of the municipal office here on Friday.

Police, quoting eyewitnesses, said the bomb exploded the moment Murugan, a leader of the state's ruling DMK, got into his car at 1.30 pm after finishing work at the office near the bus stand.

Ten passengers of a Madurai-bound bus, which was passing by at the time of the blast, were injured by debris from the car that hit them.

The explosion was so powerful that the roof of the car was shattered into pieces and fell far away.

Murugan, whose legs were blown away, and his driver Pandi were rushed to the government Rajaji Hospital at Madurai but died on the way.

The seriously injured bus passengers, who were admitted to the Sivaganga government hospital, had been shifted to the Rajaji Hospital after first aid, hospital sources said.

It was a gory scene at the site of the explosion as flesh and parts of bodies were found sprayed all over.

Tension prevailed in the town and all shops in and around bus stand had been closed following the incident.

The schools in the town had also been closed.

District Collector M A Siddique visited the spot and arranged for rushing the injured persons to the hospital.

Police had been deployed around the town at all sensitive points and were monitoring the situation, police said.

London escaped what could have been its worst terrorist attack this morning when a car bomb packed with nails, gas canisters and containers of petrol apparently failed to detonate outside a popular West End nightclub hosting a 'ladies' night'.

Police were called to Tiger Tiger nightclub on Haymarket near Piccadilly Circus shortly before 2am when smoke was seen coming from the inside of a Mercedes car parked outside. Unconfirmed reports said that a man had been seen running away from the vehicle.

Inside officers discovered "significant quantities" of petrol, believed to be 60 litres, plus nails and gas cylinders.

They used a remote-controlled device to check the vehicle, which was parked in Haymarket, before bomb squad officers made it safe.

If the device had exploded, police said that the shrapnel would have killed or injured anyone within a wide area. The bomb could have caused a fireball as big as a house followed by a large shock wave.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Peter Clarke, head of Scotland Yard’s counter-terrorism command, said: "It is obvious that if the device had detonated there could have been significant injury or loss of life."

The incident came on Gordon Brown's second full day in 10 Downing Street, marking his first real test as Prime Minister. Mr Brown was due to host a Cabinet meeting today and said that he would remind his ministers that "vigilance must be maintained".

Mr Clarke said that police had initially been notified when an ambulance crew called to attend to an unrelated incident in the Tiger Tiger club saw smoke coming from the car.

"The police were called and Metropolitan Police explosives officers went to the scene and examined the car," he told a press conference.

"In the car they found significant quantities of petrol together with a number of gas cylinders.

"I cannot tell you how much petrol, because we have not had a chance to measure it but I can tell you that it was in several large containers. There were also a large number of nails in the vehicle.

"It is appropriate for me to pay tribute to the courage and skill of the explosives officers who manually disabled the device - and in so doing not only did their actions prevent injury and loss of property, but has given us the opportunity to gather forensic evidence."

Today the area directly around the bar was closed off all morning by officers as they checked the vehicle, which was later taken away for further examination. Piccadilly Circus station was also closed, although it was reopened at lunchtime.

Whitehall sources said that the police and security services are looking at possible international links - including similarities to car bombs used by insurgents in Iraq.

"It is entirely possible. There are various things - it is outside a nightclub, it is a vehicle-borne device, it is close to the anniversary of the July 7 attacks," one source said. "But we are keeping an open mind."

Terry Neil, managing director of TSS, the firm which provides doormen for Tiger Tiger club, said that his bouncers had also called the police before promptly evacuating the premises.

"If it wasn’t for their awareness, it could have been sat there outside a club with 1,000 people in it. It’s a very busy road," he said.

Mr Neil added that the club's cameras are "absolutely everwhere" around the club. "If you look at where it is, the camera should pick him up getting out of the car. It shouldn’t be long before they start putting out images."

A massive manhunt began for the driver of the Haymarket vehicle, with police trawling through CCTV footage from the club and nearby streets.

In addition to their Haymarket investigation today, police were thought to be conducting a huge operation around other London landmarks - including Tower Bridge and the Houses of Parliament - to search for other potential devices.

Congestion charge cameras situated throughout central London are also capable of tracking where the car came from, and which routes it took.

Terror groups like al-Qaeda are believed to have been planning attacks on nightclubs, which are considered by Islamic fundamentalists to be symbols of Western decadence.

Earlier this year, a number of Islamist extremist terrorists were imprisoned for planning several major terror attacks, including a bomb attack on London's Ministry of Sound nightclub. Islamist extremists have in the past talked about particularly targeting women, whose attendance at nightclubs they say they particularly loathe. In that regard, the fact that Tiger Tiger was holding a 'ladies' night,' complete with female DJ, would have meant a particularly large number of women were inside the club.

Tiger Tiger is a combined bar, restaurant and nightclub, part of a wider national chain, that opens from midday until the early hours of the morning. It has several floors, and is believed to have a capacity of over 1,000 - although staff said that only around 650 were in the club at the time of the incident.

Today's Cabinet meeting was briefed by Jacqui Smith, the new Home Secretary, who first chaired a session of Cobra, the Government's emergency civil contingencies committee.

This morning, before the Cabinet meeting, Mr Brown said: "The first duty of the Government is the security of the people and as the police and security services have said on so many occasions we face a serious and continuous threat to our country.

"We should allow the police to investigate this incident and then report to us. But this incident does recall the need for us to be vigilant at all times and the public to be alert at any potential incidents.

"I will stress to the Cabinet that the vigilance must be maintained over the next few days".

Ms Smith said later outside Downing Street: "I have chaired a meeting of Cobra this morning. I have been able to update my Cabinet colleagues. I have just come from a private meeting with the Prime Minister, and with the new Home Office Minister for Security, Admiral Sir Alan West.

"The Metropolitan Police counter terrorism branch has launched an investigation. It is important that we allow them to get on with that investigation without undue speculation.

"We are currently facing the most serious and sustained threat to our security from international terrorism.

"This latest incident reinforces the need for the public to remain vigilant and alert to the threat that we face at all times.

"As the Prime Minister has made clear, the Government, the police and the security services are doing everything possible to protect the public."

The attempted attack comes as the current terror threat against the UK is assessed as "severe," the second highest level, meaning that intelligence analysts consider an attack highly likely. The highest level, "critical", means that an attack is expected imminently.

Earlier this month security spot checks were introduced on petrol and chemical tankers, cement mixers - and other vehicles that could be used by suicide bombers - on key routes into London.

That reflects increasing concern in the security services that UK terrorists might copy tactics used to deadly effect by insurgents in Iraq.

Bombers in Baghdad have blown themselves up in hijacked petrol tankers and, in at least three attacks this year, have used chlorine gas canisters in lorry bombs.

The checks follow a warning this year by Sir Ian Blair, the Metropolitan Police Commissioner, that "vehicle-borne weaponry is the greatest danger that we can face". But Scotland Yard said on June 6 that it had no specific intelligence to suggest that a lorry-bomb attack was imminent.

The Metropolitan Police's Counter-Terrorism Command set up the checks as a precautionary measure but they were then incorporated into Operation Mermaid, a long-running operation aimed at ensuring vehicle safety.

An al-Qaeda terrorist convicted last year had been planning vehicle-borne bomb attacks in London when he was arrested. Dhiren Barot pleaded guilty to plotting a series of attacks, including detailed plans to pack stretch limousines with gas cylinders and explosives and detonate them in car parks beneath hotels or office blocks.

China Confiscates Muslims' Passports

HONG KONG—Authorities in northwestern China have begun confiscating the passports of Muslims, mostly ethnic Uyghurs, in an apparent bid to prevent them from making the annual pilgrimage to Mecca, local residents and officials say.

An officer who answered the phone at the Tengritagh district public security bureau [police department] of the Xinjiang regional capital, Urumqi, said local residents were required to "register" their passports with local neighborhood committees, the basic building blocks of social control in China.

“The authorities of local residential offices are collecting the passports,” he told RFA’s Uyghur service.

“Local residential offices are collecting the passports in order to register them...The authorities will keep the passports for the public. If they want to go to other countries, they can come to fetch their passports. The authorities will give the passports back to them accordingly.”

I think the word is that it is to prevent some problems, like preventing people from going on the Hajj pilgrimage. So, that is why they are collecting,

Tengritagh Public Security Officer

“The [passports] will become invalid if they do not hand them in.”

An official at a neighborhood committee in a town near the city of Kashgar confirmed the move, adding that passports were being collected only from Muslims, especially the Uyghur people.

“Today is the 18th,” the official said. “We were told to collect them within five days, and we've just started this afternoon ... the Muslims' and the Uyghur people's passports.”

“I think the word is that it is to prevent some problems, like preventing people from going on the Hajj pilgrimage. So, that is why they are collecting [them],” the official said.

He said local governments, provincial government, and the police were cooperating to accomplish the task.

Sept, 2003: Xinjiang Communist Party secretary Wang Lequan. Photo: AFP/Frederic J. Brown
“Here what's happened. They've ordered us to collect all the passports within five days and the authorities will finish investigating and registering the passports within 20-odd days. The authorities are not only collecting a few people's passports...They are collecting all the passports. We do not really know what is happening in other parts of Xinjiang,” he added.

“Every Muslim who owns a passport must hand it to the authorities.”

On June 19, the Tengritagh News Web site printed an article titled "Tightening the Pilgrimage Policy and Protecting the Public,” which carried a report on a speech by Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Party chief Wang Lequan the previous day to religious leaders from the Bureau of Religious Administration.

Wang called on the government to tighten its pilgrimage policy and to harshly punish "illegal" pilgrimage organizers. He said the government should halt underground pilgrimage activities and either restructure the current pilgrimage policy or make new pilgrimage policy.

The Xinjiang authorities began to confiscate passports immediately following the speech.

All able-bodied Muslims are expected to make the pilgrimage to Mecca, birthplace and holy city of Islam, once in a lifetime if they can afford it. Additional pilgrimages are recommended.

With around 2 million Muslims making the pilgrimage annually, airlines and operators offer specialized Hajj packages. This year’s Hajj will begin Dec. 18, so the passport registration drive comes just as people would start to think about booking tickets.

RFA’s Uyghur service was contacted initially by Uyghurs overseas who said their parents’ passports had been taken, making them unable to join them on the pilgrimage.

The Hajj is traditionally undertaken with family, or with fellow pilgrims from a local mosque, and would constitute a deep show of unity for any group making the pilgrimage together.

Uyghurs, who number more than 16 million, constitute a distinct, Turkic-speaking, Muslim minority in northwestern China and Central Asia. They declared a short-lived East Turkestan Republic in Xinjiang in the late 1930s and 40s but have remained under Beijing's control since 1949.

Malaysian state stiffens penalties to stifle Muslim conversions
The Associated PressPublished: June 27, 2007

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia: People who try to convert Muslims to other religions could face a whipping, a fine and longer prison terms in a state ruled by a conservative Islamic party in northeast Malaysia, an official said Wednesday.

The Kelantan state legislature approved changes to the law Tuesday providing for a maximum punishment of six lashes with a rattan cane, five years in prison and a fine of 10,000 ringgit (US$2,800; €2,080) for non-Muslims who preach to Muslims, said Hassan Mohamood, who heads the state's Islamic affairs government committee.

Previously, the maximum penalty was two years in prison and a fine of 5,000 ringgit (US$1,400; €1,040), but state officials feel stiffer laws are useful "as a form of deterrence," Hassan told The Associated Press.

Proselytizing of Muslims is forbidden in Malaysia, where nearly 60 percent of the country's 26 million people are ethnic Malay Muslims. Such cases are rare, and people found guilty face prison terms in most states. However, the amended penalties in Kelantan — which has been ruled since 1990 by the opposition Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party — are believed to be the heaviest nationwide.

Malay Muslims who try to convert to other religions are often sent by Malaysian authorities for counseling and rehabilitation, and some have also been imprisoned for apostasy. In a recent high-profile case that raised concerns about religious rights, a woman who was born to Muslim parents failed to get the country's highest civil court to recognize her conversion to Christianity.

Freedom of worship is guaranteed in the constitution for other religions. Malaysia has large ethnic Chinese and Indian minorities that mostly practice Buddhism, Christianity and Hinduism.

Indonesian Muslims Fear Christianization

By Daniel Hummel, IOL Correspondent

JAKARTA — Indonesian Muslims are worried about a growing Christianization drive in the world's most populous Muslim country led by Indonesian Chinese, the economic heavyweights.

"The missionaries’ ability to come and give food as well as other services coupled with government corruption in providing alternatives allows this problem to swell," Dr. Mohammad Siddiq, Executive Director of Dewan Dakwah Islamiyah Indonesia, told

He believes that Christianization is a major problem persisting in Indonesia and that one of its chief reasons is poverty.

Siddiq, whose group leads the fight against this drive, said Christians use social services to spread their message.

He added that tsunami-ravaged Aceh was a prime example with missionaries pouring into the area to deliver aid and their message.

The same pattern occurred in other places including Yogyakarta after a devastating earthquake last year.

Siddiq said people disaffected by abject poverty coupled with frequent natural disasters and little knowledge about their own religion have created similar scenarios.

The PKS, an Islamic political and social activist group, says Indonesians are very open and accepting people, thus easily influenced.

If someone comes and treats Indonesians well, giving them money, jobs and food as some missionary groups do, their heart becomes attached to the person.

"The Indonesians think with their heart, if you win their heart you win their soul," said one PKS activist.

Many Indonesian Muslims look up for wealthy Muslim countries to help them withstand such temptations.

Less Muslims

Islam entered Indonesia via trade with Arabs, Mughal Indians and Zheng He, the Chinese navigator during the Ming dynasty.

Roughly a century after Islam arrived, Christian missionaries did too.

This culminated in the colonization of most of the archipelago by the Dutch for 350 years until Independence in 1945.

Christianity experienced an exponential growth that peaked in the 1960’s and 70’s when over a relatively short period of time millions converted to Christianity.

Dr. Fatimah Husein, an Indonesian lecturer at State Islamic University in Yogyakarta, attributed the mass conversions to the events following the Communist coup and its suppression in 1965.

Many Communists seeking acceptance were quickly welcomed by the Christians, she concluded in her thesis Muslim-Christian Relations in the New Order Indonesia.

Husein cites comparative Indonesian State Statistics based on censuses in 1971 and 1990.

In 1971, Muslims made up 87.5 percent of the Indonesian populace and Christians 7.5 percent.

In 1990, the Muslim percentage went down slightly to 87.2 while the Christian increased by 2.1 percent to reach 9.6.

Hospitals, Christian in name and symbol, have often been cited as grounds for proselytizing. (IOL photo)

Today, Christian missionaries are as active as they have ever been.

Indigenous Christians and Chinese immigrants who converted to Christianity during the Dutch occupation make up the bulk of the missionary effort.

With privileges under the Dutch that they continued to enjoy under Indonesian dictator Soeharto, Chinese Christians have accumulated great economic powers.

Malls host public speeches on Christian topics as well as Christmas celebrations, while giving little recognition to Islamic holidays.

Most of those building and managing these malls are Christians of Chinese descent.

One example is the newest mall built in Jakarta, Senayan City Mall, which has a church on its top floor.

The mall, built and managed by Manggala Gelora Perkasa, offers a large public space of attraction to many Indonesians.

Questions directed to the mall about the placement of a church inside were avoided and never responded to.

The Catholic Church has 57 churches in the capital Jakarta alone.

Another example of concealed missionary is evident in the healthcare sector.

One of the largest financial blocs in Indonesia belongs to the Lippo Group of Mochtar Riady, a Christian and Chinese.

The Group has holdings in many different markets, with healthcare comprising a quarter of their earnings.

Their line of hospitals, called Siloam Hospitals (Siloam is the Indonesian version of Shalom for the Jewish greeting or in Indonesia the Christian version of Salam), offers international standard healthcare.

The hospitals are overtly Christian given the name and the symbol being the Cross.

Many Muslims frequent these hospitals and have often been cited as grounds for proselytizing.

Dr. Husein insists that Christians in Indonesia cannot be viewed as one bloc and that there are many groups with different views about proselytizing.

"There are groups in Christianity, as well as in Islam, who are more ‘hardliners’ and they might have the agenda to Christianize Indonesia as part of their religious mission," she told IOL.

"However, I think Muslims have to be cautious that even amongst the Christians themselves there are disagreements as to how to spread their religions."

Retired Catholic priest Francis G. DeLuca pleaded guilty in Syracuse City Court this afternoon to charges he sexually molested a teenage boy over a period of four years.

Although the District Attorney's Office was seeking a sentence of probation and six months in jail, Judge Kate Rosenthal promised the 77-year-old DeLuca a sentence of straight probation with no jail time. Sentencing is set for Aug. 27.

DeLuca pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree sexual abuse and two counts each of third-degree sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child for incidents that occurred in 2002, 2004 and 2005 when the same victim was 13, 15 and 16.

DeLuca served as a priest in the Wilmington Diocese in Delaware for 35 years before he was dismissed from public ministry in 1993 after being accused of sexually abusing a minor in the 1960s.

Jim O'Hara will have a complete report in The Post-Standard Friday.

Muslim students refuse food cooked by Dalit woman
IANS | Patna

Dozens of Muslim students of a Government-run Urdu school in a Bihar village have refused to take mid-day meal cooked by a Dalit woman.

"We will not touch the food. There is no question of taking food cooked by a woman belonging to the Scheduled Caste," said Nurjahan Bano, an eight-year-old student of Amri Urdu Middle School in Rohtas district, about 150 km from here.

Md Aslam Ansari, a teacher in the school, admitted that Muslim students were not eating mid-day meals for nearly a month. "It is an unfortunate thing," he said.

"All the Muslim students of the school refused to eat food cooked by a Dalit woman," villager Naushad Alam said. There are over 100 students in the school. Some parents of the school students are responsible for the decision, Alam said.

"Last month, only a few students refused to eat food cooked by a Dalit woman but later most of the students followed them," he said.

No official has visited the school so far despite a complaint filed by the Dalit woman who used to cook for the students under the mid-day meal scheme.

The district administration officials are planning to visit the school for an inspection. "We will inquire into the case soon," district official Ramnarain said.

Egypt officially bans female circumcision

Egypt on Thursday finally banned all female circumcision, the widely-practiced removal of the clitoris which just days ago cost the life of a 12-year-old girl.

Genital cutting of girls, often referred to as female genital mutilation or circumcision, is banned in Egypt although the practice remains widespread as a rite of passage for girls and is often viewed as a way to protect their chastity.

Officially the practice, which affects both Muslim and Christian women in Egypt and goes back to the time of the pharoahs, was banned in 1997 but doctors were allowed to operate ‘in exceptional cases’.

On Thursday, Health Minister Hatem Al Gabali decided to ban every doctor and member of the medical profession, in public or private establishments, from carrying out a clitoridectomy, a ministry press official said.

Any circumcision ‘will be viewed as a violation of the law and all contraventions will be punished,’ said the official, adding that it was a ‘permanent ban’.

A survey in 2000 said the practice was carried out on 97 percent of the country’s women.

In the latest fatality, 12-year-old Bedur Ahmed Shaker was taken by her mother to a private clinic in Minya, a town on the Nile south of Cairo, for the operation.

She died before she could be transferred to hospital.

Her mother accused the woman doctor of negligence, charging that her daughter’s death was linked to the anaesthetic and not the removal of the clitoris, for which she had paid 50 pounds (nearly nine dollars). Police have arrested both women.

Egypt's state-appointed Grand Mufti, in the strongest statement yet on the issue by the government's official arbiter of Islamic law, said on Sunday Islam forbade the "harmful tradition of circumcision" of girls.

The Grand Sheikh of Cairo's prestigious al-Azhar mosque, Mohamed Sayed Tantawi, has also described the practice as un-Islamic, but some other clerics have supported it.

Both Tantawi and Coptic Pope Shenouda, the leader of Egypt's minority Christian community, have said that neither the Koran nor the Bible demand or mention female circumcision, which is usually performed on pre-pubescent girls.

Imam Fatty rebuts FGM claim
Written by Sanna Jawara

Alhaji Abdoulie Fatty, the Imam of State House Mosque has rebuted claims published on 1st June edition of the Daily observer, entitled “Female Genital Cutting Unislamic” as utter rubbish.
In an interview with the Daily Observer, Imam Fatty said “as far as Islam is concerned “we do observe circumcision not mutilation”.
He then noted that the tradition has been in existence hundreds of years ago, well before the advent of the modern civilisation.

According to him, “in the Muslim ummah nobody can tell us what is good or not good for our tradition. Before anyone tells us about our tradition, you must convince us that you have a degree or degrees in Islamic studies”
He did not hesitate to describe the publication as a big insult to the Muslim ummah and then urged the perpetrators to desist from such in the interest of religious tolerance and world peace.

According to Imam Fatty, a person who has never experienced Muslim circumcision cannot say anything genuine about it. “If the individual has undergone through the process, and as a result, contracted HIV/AIDS, and died at delivery process or the child died, this can then serve as an evidence of the dangers associated with the practice,” he added.

Imam Fatty further stated that as far as Islam is concerned, Prophet Muhammad (PBU), and his disciples, Islamic Schools of thoughts and Haddish, have all spoken well of the circumcision. He then quoted verse 36, which states that ‘Those who disbelieve and spend their wealth to hinder ‘men’ from the part of Allah, so will they continue to spend it. But in the end it will become an anguish for them. They will be overcome and those who disbelieve will be gathered unto hell”.

The Imam made several quotations from Dr Jack Faal, a renown Gynaecologist, who conducted extensive research on female circumcision, saying “despite all that has been said about it, the surgery in Female Circumcision is simple. What happens is a cutting of the skin, a piece of skin, no bone is involved in it. It amazed people who say you bleed to death in circumcision”.

The State House Imam urged religious leaders to desist from being used by other people for their selfish interest.
He clearly stated that, “there is nothing horrible and sympathetic than those who drills their nose, lips, breast tips, eyes brows, biblical cords, etc, and put in irons there, all in the name so-called fashion” .

Telgi given 13-year jail term, fined Rs 102 cr

PUNE: Abdul Karim Telgi, the mastermind of the multi-crore fake stamp paper scam, was on Thursday sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for 13 years and fined a whopping Rs 102 crore on various counts in one of the main cases of the scandal.

Hours after Telgi pleaded guilty and repented his actions, Judge Chitra Bhedi of a special court pronounced the quantum of punishment under various sections of the IPC and the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crimes Act (MCOCA). This is the harshest punishment given to Telgi in any of the fake stamp paper cases he has been convicted for so far in Maharashtra and Karnataka.

Judge Bhedi observed that she had taken a "lenient view" since Telgi, who is in judicial custody here, had pleaded guilty and also because of his health. Telgi is HIV-positive.

She sentenced 42 other accused in the case, who too had pleaded guilty, to rigorous impriosnment for up to six years and imposed fines on them.

CBI counsel Raja Thakre moved an application in the court seeking the confiscation of Telgi's property to recover the fine slapped on him.

Telgi, who broke down earlier in the day while pleading guilty, thanked the judge for "giving him justice".

Two more Christians killed in an attack in Mosul
The victims are two Assyrian men from the National Union of Beth Nahrin. Persecution of Iraqi Christians continues in order to prevent them from taking part in the political process.

Mosul (AsiaNews) – Anti-Christian violence in the predominantly Sunni city of Mosul, in northern Iraq, is not showing any sign that it will end soon. Two Assyrian men were killed yesterday, online Arabic webzine reports. According to the police, Zuhair Youssef Astavo Kermles, 49, and Luay Solomon Numan, 21, from the National Union of Beth Nahrin, were killed in a drive by shooting.

The incident is just another example of the daily attacks, crimes and acts of violence and terror directed at the small Christian community of Mosul.

Chaldean priest, Fr Ragheed Ganni and three subdeacons were also massacred here near his parish church on June 3.

For, which is run Iraqis living abroad, the campaign of persecution that is underway seeks to obliterate Iraq’s Christians. It is the work of cowards “who do not know religion and conscience.” These groups want to prevent Christians from participating in the political process by killing its members or forcing them to emigrate.

20 beheaded bodies found in Iraq By SINAN SALAHEDDIN, Associated Press Writer
1 hour, 29 minutes ago

BAGHDAD - Twenty beheaded bodies were discovered Thursday on the banks of the Tigris River southeast of Baghdad, while a parked car bomb killed another 20 people in one of the capital's busy outdoor bus stations, police said.

The beheaded remains were found in the Sunni Muslim village of Um al-Abeed, near the city of Salman Pak, which lies 14 miles southeast of Baghdad.

The bodies — all men aged 20 to 40 years old — had their hands and legs bound, and some of the heads were found next to the bodies, two officers said on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information

a parked car bomb ripped through a crowded transport hub in southwest Baghdad's Baiyaa neighborhood at morning rush hour, killing at least 20 people and wounding more than 50, another officer said on the same condition.

Many of the victims had been lining up for buses, awaiting a ride to work. Some 40 minibuses were incinerated in the explosion, police said.

Associated Press Television News video showed an open square strewn with smoldering car parts and charred bodies with clothes in tatters. Bystanders, some weeping, gingerly loaded human remains into ambulances.

A pickup truck rumbled slowly away from the scene, with two pairs of legs — the dead bodies of victims — dangling out of the back.

One of the police officers who gave information about the ghastly discovery of bodies southeast of Baghdad is based at Interior Ministry headquarters in the capital, and the other is based in Kut, 100 miles southeast of Baghdad.

Sporadic clashes had been under way in the Salman Pak area for several days, between Interior Ministry commandos and suspected insurgents, the Kut officer said. It was unclear whether the discovery of the bodies was related to the recent fighting.

Salman Pak and its surrounding area has been the focus of new U.S. military operations to oust suspected al-Qaida fighters from the Baghdad's outskirts. American forces launched a drive into Salman Pak and neighboring Arab Jabour two weeks ago.

At the time, ground forces commander Lt. Gen. Raymond Odierno said U.S. troops were heading into those areas in force for the first time in three years.

In other violence Thursday, three mortar rounds slammed into a popular shopping district in central Baghdad, killing three pedestrians, police said. The attack damaged shops in the Shorja market area and wounded 14 people, an officer said on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to talk to media.

Mortars also fell early Thursday in eastern Baghdad's al-Amin neighborhood, killing two civilians and wounding four others, police said.

It was unclear whether the mortars were aimed at the Shorja shopping area, or whether they fell short of an intended target. In recent months, tall security barriers have been built around popular marketplaces in Baghdad, preventing car bombers from entering. However, mortars can be lobbed over such blast walls.

In Nasiriyah, about 200 miles southeast of Baghdad, local police said two suspected militants were killed early Thursday when the bomb they were planting near a house of a U.S. translator detonated prematurely.

Also Thursday, the British military said three British soldiers were killed in a roadside bomb in southern Iraq.

The bomb exploded near the soldiers' vehicle late Wednesday southeast of Basra, Iraq's second-largest city, the military said in a statement. Another soldier was wounded in the blast and remains in stable condition at a military hospital, it said.

The death raised to at least 154 the number of British troops killed in Iraq since the war began in March 2003.

Britain has withdrawn hundreds of troops from Iraq, leaving a force of around 5,500 based mainly on the fringes of Basra, 340 miles southeast of Baghdad. The U.S. currently has about 155,000 troops in Iraq.

On Wednesday, outgoing British Prime Minister Tony Blair said his country would withdraw even more troops within weeks, but he refused to set a more specific timetable.
