Kolkata, September 23 Rizwanur Rehman had agreed to convert to Hinduism, according to the wishes of his father-in-law Ashok Todi, to have a peaceful married life with Priyanka. In a letter written to an NGO two days before his mysterious death, the victim not only talked about his “harassment at the hands of top Kolkata Police personnel” but also involvement of politicians.
The letter, a copy of which is with The Indian Express, names local Trinamool MLA Javed Khan who acted as a mediator and asked Rizwan to “go and meet his father-in-law”. Rizwan’s family members on Sunday demanded a CBI probe into the matter. Rukbanur Rehman, the victim’s elder brother, said: “My brother died after harassment by police. We will also write to the Chief Minister demanding justice.”

Rizwan’s body was discovered on the railway tracks in Sealdah section between Bidhannagar station and DumDum junction on Saturday morning. Sadiq Hussain, one of the legal witnesses to Rizwan and Priyanka’s marriage, meanwhile, fears for his life. When contacted over phone, he told The Indian Express: “I received threatening calls from Lalbazar. After Rizwan’s death, I think it’s my turn. I have already lodged a complaint with the State Human Rights Commission,” he said over phone.

“On August 31 this year, Priyanka left her parental home and came to reside with me permanently at my Tiljala residence. We submitted a letter of information about our marriage at the office of the Commissioner of Police in, DC South Division, OCs of Karaya, Entally and Bidhannagar, and the SP of North 24-Parganas. Around 4 pm, my wife informed her father about our marriage... He told me that I will have to convert to Hinduism, to which I agreed,” he wrote in the letter dated September 19.

According to his family members and his own statement in the letter, even after formal information to the Kolkata Police regarding their marriage, DC (Headquarters) Gyanwant Singh and DC (Detective Department) Ajay Kumar threatened the couple.

“On September 7, Priyanka’s aunt came, pleading that she must go with her as her father was ill and admitted at Apollo... Local MLA Javed Khan too came to our house and asked us to meet her father,” the letter added. A day later, the couple was called to Lalbazar and threatened, and Priyanka was sent to her parents.

The victim ended the letter with a plea for help. “I’m an honest and sincere citizen of India and have done everything respecting the Constitution. As adults, we have married according to the law of the land. Please help me get in touch with my wife.”
