BSP leader’s son hacks 3 to death
SP Singh | Meerut

Gouges out eyes, shoots them for objecting to his stalking ex-Armyman’s daughter

The ghastly killing of three youth, reportedly by the son of a Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) functionary, has the western UP nerve centre of Meerut in the clutch of tension. The incident, in which the youth were slaughtered for objecting to the BSP leader’s son stalking the daughter of an Army officer, took place on May 22. A complete bandh was observed in Meerut on Thursday following the confessional statement of Haji Izlal, son of Haji Iqbal and Zubeda, who had unsuccessfully contested the last mayoral election.

Izlal is said to have confessed that he called the three youth to his residence, where he butchered them and got the pieces of their bodies thrown into a vehicle near the Hindon at Baleni, in Baghpat district. He said that Punit Giri, a nephew of Delhi Police inspector Girish Giri, Sunil Dhaka, brother of constable Anil Dhaka, and Sudhir Ujjwal were picked up from Victoria Park swimming pool by Izlal’s driver, Mannu Punjabi, and taken to his densely populated Gudri Bazar residence.

Mannu left the three youth at Izlal’s mercy at Gudri Bazar, dominated by members of Izlal’s community. It is alleged that the BSP leader’s son then chopped off their heads, gouged out the eyes and later shot them in public view. After this brutal display of “power”, the bodies were dumped into a vehicle which was abandoned near the Hindon. The resident of Baleni saw the abandoned vehicle the following day and opened its doors to find the bodies inside. The local police were informed and an investigation launched. The vehicle was traced to Izlal, who has since been arrested.

Raj Kumar Sangwan, an RLD leader, said, “Izlal’s mother Zubeda had contested the mayoral election on a Bahujan Samaj Party ticket, but lost to Madhu Gurjar. Izlal was also aspiring for a BSP ticket for the Assembly elections. With the BSP coming to power in the State, Izlal had turned arrogant and stalked the daughter of a retired Army officer.” He added, “The boys objected to Izlal’s advances towards the girl and he got angry with them. He got the boys picked up and butchered them to death. The lawyers at Baghpat thrashed Izlal in court when he was being produced there.”

Senior Superintendent of Police (Meerut) Alok Singh said, “We have arrested main accused Izlal and recovered a US-made Smith & Wesson pistol, two mobile phones and the car’s papers from his possession. We have arrested him under the NSA and Gangster Act. The Baghpat police had been conducting the investigation but the case has now being transferred to Meerut. ASP RK Bhardwaj has been appointed the investigation officer, along with a team of competent inspectors and sub inspectors.”

Meanwhile, Thursday’s bandh call was given by all the political parties, except the ruling BSP, and it was largely successful. The city is still in a state of shock after Haji Izlal’s confessional statement.

Meerut protests triple murders
S Raju, Hindustan Times, Meerut, May 28, 2008

The brutal murder of three youngsters in full public view last week has angered residents of the city. Students, political leaders and the common man took to the streets, raising their voices for the immediate arrest of all the accused and to book them under national Security Act (NSA).

On the night of May 23, a BSP leader and his aides allegedly kidnapped Punit, Sunil and Sudhir from the Victoria park swimming pool and took them to the densely populated Gudri Bazar locality. The trio were then thrashed and left there to die, after their throats were slit. After that, their bodies were reported placed in a Maruti Esteem car and dumped near Baleni village in Baghpat district.

Sunil and Sudhir were students, while Punit was working as a railway contractor. They were reportedly close to an army officer’s daughter. The BSP leader, Ejlal, developed a passion for the same girl and reportedly decided to eliminate his rivals.

Activists and leaders of the Meerut Bachao Morcha called for a Bandh on Thursday to protest the brutal act of the BSP leader and his aides. The parental body of traders, Sanyukt Vyapar Sangh, has extended its support to the bandh.

“No one has made such a big mockery of law and order earlier. They killed three innocent youngsters like animals in a public place and many accused are still at large,” said Bijendra Aggarwal, president of the association expressing his dismay over the delay in the arrests. “All shops, petrol pumps, gas agencies and other organisations would be closed during bandh,” he declared. Referring to it as the height of brutality, BJP MLA Satyaprakash Aggarwal accused the police officials of succumbing to pressure from the ruling BSP party.

Meerut killer family shows no remorse
The Pioneer, May 31, 2008, Shiv Kumar | Meerut
The residence of Haji Izlal, who has been arrested for hacking three youth to death on May 21 after they objected to his stalking the daughter of a former Armyman in Meerut, is quiet but devoid of any remorse over the brutal act.

Meanwhile, the city remains tense after the cold-blooded murder in the crowded Gudri Bazaar locality. Izlal’s mother had unsuccessfully contested the last mayoral election on a BSP ticket and he also aspired to become an MLA of the party.

The Pioneer visits Izlal’s grand house and is met with silence, but no regret, and no tears are shed over his arrest. Nothing looks amiss since “it (things like the arrest) has become routine due to the family’s criminal background”, say locals. About 20 men sit near the main entrance of the house, which is just 200 yards from a police post. They are all silent, as if nothing has happened. Discouraging any attempt to strike up a conversation, they coerce this correspondent to move ahead.

Since the murders reportedly took place in the congested Gudri Bazaar area in public view, most residents are supposed to be aware of the incident. But no one dares speak a word against the Izlal family. Locals say that the family has a strong following and “people are ready to die for them”, which has allowed the family members to violate law of the land at will. A sample of the family’s clout: Asked about the conduct of Izlal, a local shopkeeper said, “He is very well behaved… I am not aware that he has ever done anything wrong.”

The motive for the murders is said to be the overtures made by one of them towards Izlal’s “girlfriend” Sheeba, who lives in Radha Nagar Colony of Meerut. However, the students of Meerut College — where two of the three slain youth were students — refuse to buy this theory. They say that the murders were carried out for “revenge, haughtiness and overconfidence that with his money power Izlal would easily get away from the clutches of law”

Meerut College students’ union president Nirman Singh says, “None of those murdered had made any overtures to Sheeba. Instead, they had objected to Izlal’s presence in their locality to meet Sheeba and even warned him that it would damage the moral values of youngsters. They had an altercation with Izlal about six months ago but a patch-up was brought about later.”

But Izlal is not the one to forget and forgive, say sources. So he waited for his opportunity and invited Punit Giri, Sunil Dhaka and Sudhir Ujwal to his residence on May 21. After the four had drinks, Izlal and his henchmen thrashed the three youth and then chopped off their heads. The bodies were then abandoned inside a vehicle near the Hindon.

Jagat Singh, a former MLC and RLD leader, says, “Izlal has a slaughterhouse and many illegal businesses and property worth hundreds of crores. The case has been transferred from Baghpat to Meerut simply with a view to protecting Izlal as his writ runs in the city.” Izlal’s family has also been involved in a long-running fratricidal dispute which has claimed the lives of some members of the family.

An elderly woman, who introduces herself as the grandmother of Izlal, says, “He has done nothing wrong. He was just trying to protect himself from the attackers who barged into our house. All of us are hajis and namazis and we keep away from all immoral things.” On second thoughts, she added, “I do not know much about the killings but that seems to be a case related to a woman.”

Pakistani boy 'killed by teacher'

A large number of children in Pakistani attend religious seminaries
A student of a religious seminary in Pakistan's Punjab province has died after he was punished by his teacher, police say.

Atif, seven, was hung upside down from a ceiling fan by Maulvi Ziauddin for not memorising his Koran lessons, his fellow students told the police.

Atif's condition deteriorated quickly and he died in the teacher's room. Maulvi Ziauddin has been arrested.

Human rights organisation say Pakistani children are often exposed to abuse.

Arrested

The students told the police in the town of Vehari that Atif was punished on Wednesday by Maulvi Ziauddin who left him hanging from the fan for some time.

The son of a farm labourer, Atif lived in the seminary with about 20 other students, including a cousin.

"When his cousin did not see Atif on Wednesday night or the next morning, he informed the family," a Vehari police official, Mohammad Afzal, told the BBC.

"Members of the family found Atif's body in Maulvi Ziauddin's room, but the cleric himself was missing," he said.

He was arrested from a nearby village later on Thursday.

The police said they would file formal charges after an autopsy report is issued by the local hospital.

In a report published in January, Lawyers for Human Rights and Legal Aid (LHRLA) - an organisation which monitors and compiles cases of child abuse and kidnapping - said children in Pakistan were increasingly exposed to abuse, kidnapping and violence.

The number of reported cases involving children has more than doubled from 617 in 2006 to 1,595 last year, the report said.

It blamed poor law enforcement and old social attitudes towards children's rights as some of the reasons for the problem

Algeria Shuts Down 26 Protestant Churches
By Ethan Cole
Christian Post Reporter
Fri, May. 30 2008 11:59 AM ET

Authorities in the overwhelmingly Muslim nation of Algeria have closed half of the Protestant churches in the country over the last six months, alerted persecution watchdog groups this week.

Twenty-six Algerian churches were shut down either by official written order or verbal warning since November 2007, according to Open Doors USA. The churches, ranging in size from several dozens to more than 1,000 members, are victims of a recent aggressive campaign against Christians.

It is feared that if persecution continues all the churches will be closed by the end of the year.

“This was actually caused by an ordinance that was passed in 2006,” said Open Doors’ Advocacy Coordinator Lindsay Vessey to Mission Network News. “This ordinance, basically, was making it more difficult for churches to worship. It restricts where they can worship and also tries to prevent Christians from proselytizing or evangelizing."

In March 2006, Algeria passed a law that required non-Muslim places of worship to have a government-issued certificate proving that they adhere to state worship guidelines. But Christian groups have accused the government of using various means to block their registration process, and complained that the regulations are unclear.

According to Compass Direct, the law restricting non-Muslim worship did not take effect until this year.

In addition to church closures, the crackdown on Christians also includes the arrest of Protestants as they travel between cities or exit religious meetings, and blocking Catholics from participating in regular ministry activities taking place outside of their church buildings.

Last month, an Algerian Christian was detained five days, fined $460, and given a one-year suspended prison sentence for carrying a Bible and personal Bible study books, according to Compass. The Christian young man was a convert from Islam and had reportedly told fellow believers that police pressured him to return to Islam while he was in custody.

Several other reports in May revealed that Christian converts were being pressured to return to Islam, and harassed for practicing their new faith without license.

Experts and Algerian Christians have offered several reasons for the recent crackdown, including: increased anti-Christian propaganda in Arab media; a ploy to distract Algerians from pressing domestic concerns such as national housing shortage and inflation of staple goods prices; and a growing number of Christian converts from Islam, according to Compass.

Algeria has 32 congregations that belong to the Protestant Church of Algeria, and another 20 small fellowships that exist independently. There are at least 10,000 Protestants in Algeria.

Islam is the official state religion of Algeria, where 99 percent of its 33 million population is Muslim.

Open Doors has launched a worldwide advocacy campaign calling on concerned citizens to contact their local Algerian Embassy to ask that the Algerian government stop church closures and reopen those that have already been closed.

“Please e-mail Ambassador Kherbi (Algerian Ambassador to the United States) today, asking him to stop the closure of churches and to reopen those that have already been closed. We need to tell the Algerian government that these church closures must stop, and that freedom for all religions must be respected,” says Open Doors USA Advocacy Program Manager Lindsay Vessey. “Also, keep Algerian believers in your prayers.”

Calif. torture trial airs family horror stories By LINDA DEUTSCH, AP Special Correspondent
Fri May 30, 8:09 AM ET

MURRIETA, Calif. - For weeks, the three wives of Mansa Musa Muhummed and most of their 19 children have been telling a jury countless stories of torture and starvation that they kept to themselves for years.

Muhummed sat in a desert courthouse with a hand over his face, shaking his head in denial as family members described being beaten, strung up by their feet and forced to eat vomit and feces.

"It is the worst case we've ever heard of," prosecutor Julie Baldwin said last week.

The alleged atrocities went undetected by social service agencies, and police now have Muhummed, 55, facing up to seven life sentences if convicted of a raft of abuse charges.

Muhummed, whose given name was Richard Boddie, is on trial at Riverside County Superior Court after more than nine years of legal wrangling in which he changed lawyers four times and represented himself for more than two years.

He has pleaded not guilty to charges of torturing seven of the children, abusing 12 of them and falsely imprisoning two wives.

The trial delays may have hurt his case because his children — once reluctant to talk to authorities — are now telling strangers of extreme deprivation, physical abuse and starvation.

Standing just 4-foot-6 and weighing about 98 pounds, Sharon Boddie, 27, told jurors last week that she had grown and gained weight since her father was arrested nine years ago and the children were sent to foster or group homes.

But she still has scars from beatings and burns. She said she was taken out of school in second grade because she kept running away and teachers no longer wanted her there because she stole other children's lunches.

"I'd go like a week without eating, not even water," she said in a flat, unemotional voice. She said she would be beaten when she tried to steal food from the refrigerator.

One son caught sneaking food testified that he was forced to eat what he took until he regurgitated. Then he was forced to eat his vomit. Another daughter said she was ordered to hand feed her father while she was denied food.

Doctors said the children were extremely malnourished. A 19-year-old daughter was 4-foot-1 and weighed 56 pounds.

After moving to rural Riverside County, they lived for about three years in a van at a Muslim campground, Sharon Boddie testified. The van had no running water or gas for cooking. Baldwin said Muhummed had no known occupation.

The now-adult children have testified that Muhummed forced them to beat each other when he wasn't doing the hitting.

His lawyer has suggested some of the children abused each other and he is challenging testimony as exaggerations. Baldwin said she expects the defense to accuse the wives of being responsible for abuse.

Muhummed has told authorities he believed his Muslim religion allowed him to have multiple wives.

Marva Lewis Barfield, 53, the first of Muhummed's three wives and mother of 14 of his children, testified that she beat some of her children with a boat oar at his instructions because she feared he would kill her if she disobeyed.

Barfield said she married Boddie when she was 18 and that she was repeatedly beaten and threatened with death during 26 years of marriage.

Barfield was jailed for 17 months in the case and pleaded guilty to one count of child endangerment as part of a plea bargain to testify against Muhummed.

Another wife, Laura Cowan, said that he took control of her bank accounts and finances. She and other members of the family also collected public assistance.

It was Cowan who finally got the attention of authorities when Muhummed took her with him to a post office and she slipped a 13-page letter about the abuse to a postal clerk.

The letter was sent to the county social services agency and to sheriff's deputies, who found the family living in a filthy garage in a gated community. Cowan presented authorities with tapes she secretly recorded of some beatings.

Sharon Boddie said social workers had checked on their welfare before, but her father put food boxes in cupboards before they arrived and the children were taught to lie.

"I told them everything was OK because my dad had coached us what to say," she recalled. "I'd say my dad treated us really good — that he was the best parent in the world."

When they were removed from his Muhummed's home, most of the children said they could not read or write and had not been to school.

The brothers and sisters have said they were denied use of a bathroom and could not bathe for weeks at a time or wash their clothes. Sometimes, Boddie took them in the yard and hosed them down.

Sharon Boddie said she was strung upside down by her feet and left in a dark basement for hours at a time.

Baldwin said many of the children were unwilling to talk to authorities when their father was first arrested in 1999.

Even when her father was handcuffed to a car outside their home, Sharon Boddie wouldn't speak because she feared he wouldn't go to jail. She said he once waved a gun around and said, "I can kill all of you and nobody will ever know."

She said she decided to tell her story when her father was behind bars and she realized she was "finally going to have a life."

Urgent Attention

Another free thinker is to be executed in Iran in the coming days
It is with great regret that I inform all freedom loving people of the world that the Mullahs' terrorist regime is about to execute one of Iran's finest thinkers, a true patriot, scholar and historian.

Dr. Foroud Fouladvand is a dedicated monarchist, a Ferdousi expert as well as expert on the history of Iran and Islam.

A confirmed report sent to the office of Dr. Fouladvand in London from inside Iran suggests that Dr. Fouladvand and two of his compatriots are going to be executed on Saturday, May 31, 2008 or possibly even sooner.

The two men to be executed alongside Dr. Fouladvand are Mr. Nazem Schmidtt, an Iranian/American citizen, aka Simorgh, and Mr. Alexander Valizadeh, an Iranian/ German citizen, aka Koroush Lor.

Dr. Fouladvand, a British citizen, was known throughout the Iranian community for his open criticism of Islam and the Mullah's tyranny.

Dr. Fouladvand, who is an expert on Islam, openly challenged the Qur'an in his daily television broadcasts for listeners both inside and outside Iran. His Television discussions were offensive to the Mullahs. On March 10, 2006, in a preplanned action, about 65 of his supporters refused to leave a Lufthansa plane in protest of the European Union's policy of appeasement of the Mullahs' regime.

Dr. Fouladvand was led to believe by an agent of the Mullahs' regime posing as a monarchist activist from within Iran that there were many Iranian patriots inside Iran who believed in him, and that a meeting with them would be fruitful in organizing and uniting people inside Iran to oppose the Mullahs. On October 13, 2006, Dr. Fouladvand and a number of his friends, including the above-named men, left London for the Turkish/Iranian border. The last news of Dr. Fouladvand's whereabouts was on January
17, 2007, when he was expected to meet the supposedly Iranian activists in the Kurdish province of Hakkary in Iraq, which is close to the Iranian border.

In January 2007, the agents of the Mullahs' secret police arrested and smuggled these three men into Iran, where they were imprisoned and were subjected to torture.

Please contact anyone you can. Alert government officials, the press, the Amnesty International and the human rights organizations in your country of residence.

Iraq: Al-Qaeda creates teenage terror cell, says report

Baghdad, 27 May (AKI) - A new al-Qaeda cell has been created for Iraqis under 16 years old, according to a report in the pan-Arab daily Al-Hayat.

Known as the "Youths of Heaven", the report said that the cell has been active for some days in various suburbs of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad.

In an interview with Al-Hayat, Sayd Aziz Salman, the head of the Awakening Council in Taji, north of Baghdad, said that the cell was the latest danger in the country.

Awakening Councils are US-allied Sunni militia movements fighting al-Qaeda in Iraq.

Salman said that after al-Qaeda suffered major losses in battles with the Iraqi military and members of his Awakening Council, the terrorist group decided to reorganise itself and are hoping to target the top leadership of the Awakening Councils.

In order to do this, they have formed a cell of aspiring suicide bombers who range in age between 11 and 16 years old.

It's these suicide bombers who have attacked various Iraqi suburbs and some Sunni areas north of Baghdad in the past few days.

"It was a member of this new cell of attackers who hit one of our councils on Monday in Tarimiya," said Salman.

"The bomber was in a car when he detonated the explosives killing six people and wounding 18. A large number of the suicide attacks that hit our offices are now carried out by al-Qaeda through these young people who have recently been recruited," he said.

Last week, the military stopped six adolescents who were allegedly part of the "Youths of Heaven".

"After interrogation, we discovered that the head of the group, who gave them the economic and logistical support, was 16 years-old," said Salman.

"We found out that they used certain camps outside Taji and Tarimiya for training, with the help of some local farmers.

"Every cell in this new group has five members. In some of these groups, the young people are between 11 and 13 years old," he said.

Blind faith blinds people looking for vision of Mary
At least 50 people in Kottayam district have reportedly lost their vision after gazing at the sun...
Kottayam | India
Updated On: 3/12/2008

At least 50 people in Kottayam district have reportedly lost their vision after gazing at the sun looking for an image of Virgin Mary.

Though alarmed health authorities have installed a signboard to counter the rumour that a solar image of Virgin Mary appeared to the believers, curious onlookers, including foreign travellers, have been thronging the venue of the 'miracle'.

St Joseph's ENT and Eye Hospital in Kanjirappally alone has recorded 48 cases of vision loss due to photochemical burns on the retina. “All our patients have similar history and symptoms. The damage is to the macula, the most sensitive part of retina. They have developed photochemical, not thermal, burns after continuously gazing at the sun,” Dr Annamma James Isaac, the hospital’s ophthalmologist, said.

The hospital has been receiving patients with these abnormal symptoms. When the doctors found a pattern in the case sheets, they reported it to the district medical officer.

The health department has now put up a signboard at the hotelier's house near Erumeli, where the divine image is said to have appeared, warning people against exposing their eyes to sunlight.

Even the churches in the vicinity disowned the miracle during Sunday mass after health officers and doctors approached the clergy. The house in question has been the centre of local rumours for a few months. The hotelier, who has since moved to another house, had claimed that statues of Mother Mary in his house have been crying honey and bleeding oil and perfumes.

Though people have been flocking to the "blessed land" - hastily christened Rosa Mystica Mountain - for long, the mad rush for the image in the sky began a week ago.

There are quite a few people still seeking the miracle, despite the experiences of their unfortunate predecessors and strict health warnings against gazing at the sun with the naked eye.

"The patients show varying degrees of severity. They are mostly girls in 12-26 age group. Our youngest patient is 12 and the oldest 60. Most of them were looking at the sun between 2 and 4 pm, when UV1 and UV2 rays are harshest," Dr James Isaac said. He added that they could identify the problem as solar retinopathy because they were aware of the local sensation.

"Most patients may hopefully improve their vision. But there may be long-term effects on the retina," he added.

SUCCESS STORY: The chapter explains the success story of Rajini, through his frien Bahadur's experience.

Chennai: Having scaled many new heights, supersytar Rajinikanth has entered the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) school textbook with his success story, 'From bus conductor to Superstar'.

Published by the Oxford University Press, the book Learning to Communicate, has a chapter on the superstar 'From Bus Conductor to Superstar'.

The chapter, which comes under the unit 'dignity of work', explains the success story of Rajinikanth, through an experience of his friend Bahadur, who was the driver, when the superstar worked as a bus conductor in Karnataka before entering the films.

It begins with Bahadur going to a theatre to watch Sivaji - The Boss, Rajini's latest blockbuster and recalls his association with the actor.

It was Bahadur, who prodded the then conductor Sivaji Rao Geakward to join the Film Institute in Chennai after identifying his talent in acting.

After admitting the reluctant Rajni in the Film Institute, Bahadur took care of his financial needs for nearly two years. The chapter explains how the Superstar still catches up with Bahadur.

Incidently, Rajinikanth was presently acting in a film Kuselan, depicting the story of an actor, who has not forgotten his childhood friend, who is a barber.

At the end of the chapter, the students were asked to interpret and state why this story fits into the title 'dignity of work', thus making Rajini's story, a good example to emulate.

Iran: Cleric 'calls all feminists whores and foreign spies'

Tehran, 27 May (AKI) - A top Iranian cleric from the northeast, Ayatollah Ahmad Elmalhoda, has reportedly called feminists "whores and foreign spies".

"These whores, clutching a piece of paper in their hands to gather signatures, are working for foreign powers and want to destabilise the Islamic Republic," said Elmalhoda.

He is the highly influential prayer leader in the northeastern holy Shia city of Mashad.

Elmalhoda has called on the government to "intervene decisively against these whores, because it is improper to leave them to act with impunity."

A few weeks ago, Elmalhoda said women who do not wear the Islamic veil as instructed "turned men into animals."

Verbal attacks against feminists in Iran are also being accompanied by a vast judicial offensive.

Eight feminists involved in a campaign to gather "a million signatures in favour of equality" were recently given jail terms of various lengths and sentenced to public floggings.

The Iranian authorities have in the last two weeks censured twelve websites close to the feminist movement.

Iran: Ten Christian converts arrested

Tehran, 28 May (AKI) - Ten Iranians who converted from Islam to Christianity in recent months have been arrested in the southern city of Shiraz.

According to Goodarz, a spokesperson for the Iranian converts, more than 35 of them have been arrested since the beginning of the year. Goodarz himself has taken refuge in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates.

The new Majlis or Iranian parliament which met for the first time on Tuesday will be discussing in the coming weeks proposed laws presented by the government to reform the penal code.

Under the new law, anyone born to a Muslim father who decides to renounce Islam and convert to another faith, faces the death penalty.

The punishment is currently absent from the Iranian penal code even though in the past, dozens of Christian converts and followers of the Bahai faith have been hanged.

The other major militant group operating in Tripura is the Borok National Council of Tripura.

The media persons were flown on a MI-17 helicopter to Tripura to get a first hand account of how the Assam Rifles in collaboration with other security agencies have been largely successful in neutralising the militant groups operating in the State since the early 80s.Agartala, May 23 : The first destination from Imphal was Agartala where the media persons were taken to the Headquarters of the 21 Sector Assam Rifles.

Coming straight to the point while addressing the media, spokesperson of the unit, Lt Col Nishis Bhatnagar in the presence of Brigadier SP Asthana, said that Assam Rifles in collaboration with other security forces including the State police of Tripura have been successfully curbing militant activities in the State.

Surrendered cadre of NLFT (L) and another surrenderee from NLFT (B) tell their tales to the media

Though militancy kicked off under the banner of nurturing the cultural identity language, tradition and customs, it became clear, with the passage of time, that militancy amounted to nothing less than going after material gains through extortions and kidnapping for ransom, he claimed.

Most of the top leadership of the militant outfits are living comfortable lives across the border, said the spokesperson.

The successful CI Ops thanks to the collaboration between the different security agencies, the civil administration and the backing of the State Government is best exemplified by the successful holding of the State Assembly election on February 23 this year, he said and added that four senior hardcore leaders of the NLFT (B) were eliminated by Assam Rifles in November last year.

The success of the election can be gauged from the astounding 92.33 pc voter turn out, which is a record, said Bhatnagar.

To give a more concrete story of the success achieved in CI Ops, 29 surrendered militants from the NLFT (B) and one ATTF cadre were paraded before the media.

Interacting with the media, a former and senior member of the NLFT (B) Janabir Debbarma (42) said that he joined the outfit in 1993 and surrendered on January 1, 2006 .

Explaining his stand, the former militant who held the rank of a Colonel in the outfit said that he decided to quit as the objectives spelt out earlier were getting blurred.

In other words, he had become disillusioned with the armed movement.

As for the moment, the former militant said that the Government should implement the rehabilitation programme effectively.

Vocational training is being imparted, he said but added that his priority is to set up a rubber plantation, the facility which has been extended to other groups.

The threat perception from his former comrade in arms is there, he admitted, but he is determined to lead a civilian life now.

Teliamura, May 24 : The next stop was the camp of 15 Assam Rifles at Teliamura in South Tripura where ten NLFT (B), four NLFT and two ATTF surrendered cadres were presented to the media.

26 year old Jarma Charan, who was described as a terror while with the NLFT by none other than the CO of 15 AR, the affable Col AK Chaterjee, seemed like any other young man in his twenties, but beneath that youthful exterior lies a soul, which became disillusioned with life in the jungle and surrendered on April 9 this year.

Parrying questions from the media, Charan said that he joined the NLFT in 1999 but decided to quit as he had become disillusioned with the top leadership, who he described as 'cruel and merciless'.

At the moment, his priority is to get a meaningful source of livelihood and is open to the idea of joining the security forces, if selected.

At the moment, vocational training is yet to start for him and some of his colleagues. Providing inputs, Colonel AK Chaterjee said that the surrendered militants may be put through the recruitment rally.

Asserting that the State Government has been playing a proactive role in weaning the cadres from the jungle, the CO said that for each surrendered militant a sum of Rs 1.5 lakhs is deposited as fixed deposits in the bank.

The interest that comes from the fixed deposit is given to them on monthly instalment.

The CO further said that most of the cadres are not ideologically inclined but joined the militant outfits to make money.

To a question on whether there is any formal structure such as the Unified Command between the different security agencies and the State Government, Col Chatterjee said that there is no such formal set up, but they do interact and consult each other according to the situation.

Kanchenpur, May 24 : Thirty surrendered militants, mostly from the NLFT were presented before the media at the 14 Assam Rifles camp at Kanchenpur in North Tripura.

Here too, the surrendered militants had more or less the same story to narrate.

Sanjay Jamatia, 29 or 30 years old, give or take away a year, who could converse in Hindi said that he joined the NLFT in 1997 and surrendered only a few weeks back.

He received his training at Hong Kong camp in Bangladesh, and added that he decided to quit since he saw no future.

Life in the jungle was also very hard.

Jamatia, on being queried, said that he joined the NLFT to fight for freedom.

The former rebel said that he is being treated well and does not have anything to complain about.

With the statistics of surrendered militants telling a significant story, Lt Col Bhatnagar, during the interaction at Agartala, said that Tripura is a model State for successful CI Ops where the Government, the Assam Rifles and other security agencies have joined hands to contain militancy to a great extent.

Other than engaging the militants in combats, the Assam Rifles has also been winning the hearts and minds of the people through the numerous Military Civic Action programme launched in Tripura.

Bangladesh carries out raids on Indian separatists’ camp
May 29th, 2008 - 5:51 pm ICT by admin - Email This Post

New Delhi, May 29 (IANS) A squad of Bangladesh’s high-profile anti-crime force, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), demolished a secret camp of the Kamatapur Liberation Organisation (KLO), a separatist outfit active in West Bengal, says Prothom Alo, a Dhaka-based daily. The early morning swoop took place May 21 in the dense forests of Kalachara - a border point between Fatikchari and Mirsari sub-districts in Chittagong district of southern Bangladesh.

“In ten separate dens, the RAB could not find anybody as all of them fled to safety sensing the arrival of the personnel of law enforcing agency. At least 50 rounds of firing were exchanged between both sides,” said the paper quoting RAB sources.

The RAB is quoted as having said that from the household items inside all the dens, it appeared KLO militants used to visit these camps and make night halts on a regular basis.

RAB members found two locally made guns and booklets at the spot.

According to Bangladeshi authorities at least 10 to 12 Indian militants fled to safety during the heavy exchange of fire and could have possibly fled 20 km and across the international border to Tripura.

Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta told IANS that he had no specific information of this particular raid carried out by the RAB but was trying to gather more information.

“I need to get some more information of the time and date of the raids,” he said.

The KLO has been struggling for making an independent and sovereign homeland - Kamatapuri State - comprising several northern districts of West Bengal. The leader of the outfit is Jibon Singh.

Two years back India handed over a list of 176 camps of various insurgent groups like United Liberation Front of Asom, National Liberation Front of Tripura, All Tripura Tiger Force, National Democratic Front of Bodoland and the KLO in Bangladesh.

However, Bangladesh has repeatedly denied presence of Indian insurgents within its territory, despite New Delhi submitting a fresh list of militant camps and hideouts.

India’s Border Security Force and Bangladesh Rifles have discussed various problems on the border between the two countries, including infiltration, smuggling and terrorist activities.

Militants explode powerful bomb at hospital

Imphal (PTI): Militants exploded a powerful bomb inside the Regional Institute of Medical Science and Hospital (RIMSH) in the heart of Manipur capital complex here, official sources said on Monday.

The bomb was planted at the entrance of the pathology department and went off at around 10 p.m last night damaging some windows and doors.

The out patient department and emergency wards were closed today as RIMSH Employees Association kept away from work in protest against the blast, hospital sources said.

RIMSH superintendent Y Mohen said while there was tight security at the hospital complex on all working days, security measures were somewhat relaxed during night time and on Sundays and holidays.

Condemning the blast, Manipur works minister K Ranjit, Planning and development authority Chairman Kh Loken and education minister L Jayenta Kumar, who visited RIMSH minutes after the incident, termed it as an act of terrorism.

A person who claimed to be the spokesman of Kangleipak Communist Party-Military Council (KCP-MC) told the media that the blast was the handiwork of a demonstration team of the 5th Lanjaba (war) unit of the outfit but did not give any reason for it.

RIMSH said KCP-MC had earlier demanded a huge sum of money from the employees of the hospital, including doctors.

PESHAWAR/DERA ISMAIL KHAN: Nine persons including three women and one policeman have been killed in two different incidents in Dera Ismail Khan and Peshawar creating panic in the areas.

In the first incident Monday at 8:15am, four persons traveling on a Ching Chi rickshaw were killed near Zakori Graveyard on Dar-e-Ibni road when some unknown persons started indiscriminate firing on them.

All the four persons belonged to the same Shia family and were identified as Retired Tehsildar Bashir Hussain Shah, Kafiat Hussain Shah, Hassan Ali Shah and Gyur Abbas. One constable named Qismat Ullah Khan was also killed in the result of the firing.

The murderers after committing the heinous crime managed to escape from the scene. The police after the incident have sealed the area and are on a look out for the murderers

The brutal murder of five people has again created the fear and Raheem Bazaar, Klan and Toopon Wala Bazaar were closed and the area presented the deserted look.

After the incident, the relatives of the deceased reached the hospital and raised strong slogans.

In the other incident in Wahid Garhi, Peshawar, the dispute over marriage has claimed the lives of four persons.

According to details, Shaukat Ali, Tahir Khan, Fazl Rafique, Sabz Ali with some women entered the house of Yousaf and started indiscriminate firing resulting in the death of four persons at the spot.

Those who lost their lives were Yousaf, his mother Gulshad and two sisters Nayab and Shehla. The murderers managed to flee from the scene, however, the police succeeded to arrest two persons including Sabz Ali and one woman.

Shia Muslims killed in Pakistan
Gunmen in north-western Pakistan have killed four Shia Muslims in what seems to be a sectarian attack, say police.

The attack took place in the town of Dera Ismail Khan, about 186 miles (300kms) from the regional capital, Peshawar, officials said.

One police officer also died in the shootout while pursuing the attackers.

Shias make up for less than 20% of Pakistan's population and militants from both communities have killed thousands in tit-for-tat attacks.

Dera Ismail Khan has witnessed a number of sectarian killings in the past.

"It seems to be a sectarian attack, but we are still investigating," area police chief Silahuddin Khan was quoted by news agency Associated Press as saying.

He said the victims had a rivalry with an outlawed Sunni militant group accused of targeting Shia Muslims across the country.

The attackers later escaped on a motorcycle.

TURKEY: FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION, POLICE CRITICISM, DENOUNCED

(ANSAmed) - ANKARA, MAY 26 - A Turkish citizen who, while being in a bus, complained to his fellow passenger about the poverty in which many of his fellow countrymen live and about the consequent fast growth of crime, was charged by a policeman for having "insulted the Turkish state". The man, if found guilty, risks up to two years of imprisonment. The story was reported today by left daily Radikal which writes on front page Silence Passenger, Yet in Buss Risks Charges Under 301, the controversial article of the Penal Code referring to the freedom of expression. Under the article, amended last May 8, a crime is offending the Turkish state and the state bodies, and not as previously offending Turkishness. The newspaper says that the passenger, a philosophy teacher, was commenting with the person sitting next to him a shantytown which has recently appeared near the city of Izmir that was held responsible for the creation of widespread growth of poverty in the country. A poverty which in turn increased the number of criminals against whom the police can do nothing, as its hands are bound by the new regulation approved in order to conform Turkey to the EU legislation. The words of the teacher however did not please the police agent who was sitting just in front of him and who after having reproached the man asked him the identity card and charged him. The first hearing of trial was fixed on July 7 in Istanbul. (ANSAmed).

Iranian man jailed over feminism petition: report Mon May 26, 5:52 AM ET

TEHRAN (AFP) - A male defender of the feminist cause in Iran has been sentenced to a year in prison, the moderate Kargozaran newspaper reported on Monday.

Amir Yaqoubali is a supporter of the "One Million Signatures" petition campaign launched in June 2006. According to a feminist website, he was arrested as he collected signatures.

The campaign seeks to change the Islamic republic's laws on marriage, divorce, inheritance and child custody by collecting signatures both online and in person.

In recent months four feminists -- Rezvan Moghadam, Nahid Jafari, Nasrin Afzali and Marzieh Mortazi Langueroudi -- were handed down suspended sentences of six months in prison and 10 lashes by Tehran Revolutionary Court for disorderly conduct in public.

In March last year, they took part in a rally outside the same court to protest against the arrest of five feminists in June 2006.

Several other activists, arrested for their pro-feminism stance, are still in jail.

Islamabad, May 8 Pakistani Hindus have been asked not to use a cremation ground allotted to them during the British era in the country's troubled northwest.
The tribesmen in Kohat town of the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) have refused to let the Hindu community cremate their dead at a ground which was allotted to them more than a century ago.

The Hindus had recently sought permission for cremating their near and dear one in the mountains of Alizai area which was a cremation site before the Partition of India.

However, when a local government official was inaugurating the cremation ground the tribesmen stopped the ceremony saying the jirga will take a decision in this regard.

A Hindu elder on condition of anonymity told Dawn that they used to cremate their dead near the Kohat Toi few decades back, then the military forcibly stopped the practice taking the plea that it demoralised the soldiers who took part in exercises in these areas.

He said that the poor Hindu community was unable to bear the extra burden of expenses incurred on taking the bodies to Attock and then make arrangements for the cremation.

The Hindu community living in Kurram, Hangu, Orakzai and Kohat tribal regions were not allowed to cremate in their respective regions shortly after Partition and they had to carry the bodies to as far as Attock for cremation. The community wanted an alternative site and had requested the government to provide them a place in the tribal region.

A place for the last rites of the Balmiki Hindu community living in the tribal as well as settled areas was allotted in Alizai, however, the elders of the area stopped the inauguration ceremony on Monday and said no last rights will be performed in the area till the jirga gives consent.

14-year-old convent girl cries rape vs priest

NATONIN, Mountain Province - A Catholic priest is facing charges of rape and acts of lasciviousness after allegedly molesting convent girls.

Crystal (not her real name), 14 years old, filed the criminal charges against Fr. Gabriel Madangeng Jr., of Hingyon, Ifugao, parish priest in Natonin, Mountain Province.

Two other victims have come to the open reporting a series of alleged abuses committed by Madangeng. As of press time Sunday one victim has agreed to settle out of court.

All victims are convent girls and minors. Madangeng has since been transferred to Bontoc where the case will be heard this week.

Crytal's family refused to settle with the church despite alleged attempts by the Bontoc-Lagawe Vicariate to convince the family for an out of court settlement.

"They said they will pay for the schooling and medication of our daughter, but we will never do that. We are going to fight it all the way, no settlements," Crystal's father said.

The assessment of the Office of the Municipal Social Welfare and Development's (MSWD) finds Crystal "to be impaired as a result of the abuse she suffered from the abuser."

Crystal, in her sworn statement said, on July 2006 Madangeng bound her arms and legs to a bed at the Lay Formation Center of the Natonin Catholic Mission.

Based on Crystal's sworn statement with the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) in Baguio City, Madangeng then proceeded to touch her body including her private parts despite pleas to stop.

"He threatened me with harm and said not to shout for help."

For a time Crystal remained silent about her harrowing experience. But her schoolmates, siblings and parents saw the changes in her.

She was frequently disoriented in school as well as at home at times acting like "her mind was away." She failed in five subjects in school and her mother once commented Crystal was acting like she was crazy.

It was only after Crystal's parents learned of her experience did they take her more seriously. They brought her to the MSWD for counseling.

After the incident, Jovita Salvador of the MSWD said Crystal has ceased to relate with her classmates, feeling depressed, unworthy and has low self-esteem.

"She is still at the stage of hatred and shame; she cannot perform her expected roles in school," Salvador added.

Crystal's father, a policeman in the town, said his wish is for the law to take its course.

The case is pending in court and hearing is set next week in Bontoc. ( Maria Elena Catajan/Sun.Star Baguio)

30 madrassa students arrested for child militancy in Swat

* Ages of arrested boys range from seven to 15 years
* One detainee says Fazlullah and his spokesman forced him to wear suicide jacket

By Akhtar Amin

PESHAWAR: Around 24 madrassa students from Swat are being investigated by security forces, while first information reports (FIR) have been registered against six others for being involved in child militancy during the military operation in Swat.

In his report on children’s rights, the Society for the Protection of the Rights of the Child (SPARC) Child Rights Committee (CRC) District Co-ordinator Shaukat Salim said that child militancy in Swat is on the rise.

He told Daily Times that about 25 to 30 madrassa students (from seven to 15 years of age) of Kabal tehsil were used as child militants by rebel cleric Fazlullah.

Salim said that security forces had registered FIRs against six students at Kabal Police Station after thwarting a planned suicide mission against security forces. He said the remaining 24 students were still under investigation at an undisclosed location.

Forced: Revealing the ordeal of one Abid, 12, Salim said that the boy had been admitted to Fazlullah’s madrassa by his parents to memorise the holy Quran. “I learnt 18 siparahs (volumes) of the Quran at the madrassa. Then, during the military operation, Mullah Fazlullah and his spokesman Sirajul Haq compelled me to wear a suicide jacket and target the district courts of Swat,” the CRC district co-ordinator quoted Abid as saying.

He said that Abid had entered the district court premises on February 26, but exited without detonating his suicide jacked for fear of being arrested by police at the court. He said that he had been followed by intelligence agencies and then arrested at the militants’ Imam Dheri complex. He said the police had also recovered eight “piles” of improvised explosives and suicide jackets from the same place. The Kabal Police Station registered an FIR against Abid on charges of terrorism and the boy was currently detained in a Swat prison, he added.

Salim said that the CRC had launched a campaign to apprise parents of the region about the issue of child militancy. He said the militants had forced several medical centres to shut down, including a non-governmental organisation ‘Plan Pakistan’, claiming that these centres were carrying out the US’ anti-Islam agenda.

Prostitution in Pakistan

In Pakistan, a dark trade comes to light. By William Sparrow

Prostitution in the Islamic nation of Pakistan, once relegated to dark alleys and small red-light districts, is now seeping into many neighborhoods of country's urban centers. Reports indicate that since the period of civilian rule ended in 1977, times have changed and now the sex industry is bustling.

Early military governments and religious groups sought to reform areas like the famous "Taxali Gate" district of Lahore by displacing prostitutes and their families in an effort to "reinvent" the neighborhood.

While displacing the prostitutes might have temporarily made the once small red-light district a better neighborhood for a time, it did little to stop the now dispersed prostitutes from plying their trade. Reforming a neighborhood, instead of offering education and alternative opportunities, appears to be at the core of early failures to curb the nascent sex industry. This mistake would become a prophetic error as now the tendrils of the sex trade have become omnipresent in cities like Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Karachi and Lahore, not to mention towns, villages and rural outposts.

An aid worker for an Islamabad-based non-governmental organization (NGO) recently related a story: quickly after his arrival in the capital, he realized the house next to his own was a Chinese brothel. The Chinese ability to "franchise" the commercial sex industry by providing down-trodden Chinese women throughout Asia, North America and Europe would be admirable in a business sense if it were not for the atrocities - human trafficking, sexual slavery and exploitation - which cloud its practice.

Chinese bordellos, often operating as "massage parlors" or beauty salons, are across Pakistan, even spread even to war-torn and restive locations such as the Afghan capital Kabul. Chinese in the sex industry have developed a cunning ability to recognize areas where the demand for sex far outstrips the supply.

The NGO worker said that after months of living adjacent to the brothel things were shaken up - literally. One evening a drunk Pakistani drove his car into the brothel. Later the driver told authorities the ramming was a protest by a devout Muslim against the debauchery of the house and its inhabitants. The NGO worker, however, had seen the same car parked peacefully outside the house the night before.

The local sex industry comprised of Pakistani prostitutes has also grown in recent years. One can easily find videos on YouTube that show unabashed red-light areas of Lahore. The videos display house after house with colorfully lit entranceways always with a mamasan and at least one Pakistani woman in traditional dress. The women are available for in-house services for as little as 400 rupees (US$6) to take-away prices ranging 1,000 to 2,000 rupees. These districts are mostly for locals, but foreigners can indulge at higher prices.

Foreigners in Pakistan have no trouble finding companionship and may receive rates similar to locals in downtrodden districts. More upscale areas like Lahore's Heera Mundi or "Diamond Market", cater to well-heeled locals and foreigners. At these places prettier, younger girls push their services for 5,000 to 10,000 rupees for an all-night visit, and the most exceptional can command 20,000 to 40,000 rupees for just short time.

Rumors abound online that female TV stars and actresses can be hired for sex. "You can get film stars for 50,000 to 100,000 rupees but you need good contacts for that," one blogger wrote after a trip to Lahore.

"The Lahore, Karachi and Rawalpindi sex scenes are totally changing and it's easier and easier to get a girl for [sex]," another blogger wrote. "Most of the hotels provide you the girls upon request." Bloggers also reported that it is easy to find girls prowling the streets after 6 pm, and foreigners can find young women hanging out near Western franchises like McDonald's and KFC. Such women, the bloggers claim, can lead the customer to a nearby short-time accommodation.

Short-time hotels offering hourly rates can be found all over major cities, underscoring the profits being reaped by the sex industry.

Pakistan can also accommodate the gay community with prostitution. Unfortunately, this has also given rise to child prostitution.

A Pakistani blogger wrote, "We [ethnic] Pathans are very fond of boys. [In Pakistan] the wives are only [had sex with] once or twice a year. There are lot of gay brothels in Peshawar - the famous among them is at Ramdas Bazaar. [One can] go to any Afghan restaurant and find young waiters selling sex."

As in many societies, access to technology, the Internet and mobile phones has only facilitated the sex trade in Pakistan. "Matchmaking" websites serve the male clientele, while providing marketing for prostitutes.

The root causes of prostitution in Pakistan are poverty and a dearth of opportunities. Widows find themselves on the streets with mouths to feed, and for many prostitution offers a quick fix. A local Pakistani prostitute can earn 2,000 to 3,000 rupees per day compared to the average monthly income of 2,500 rupees.

Forced prostitution is not rare. Women in hard times are often exploited and pushed into prostitution. Sandra (not her real name), said that after the death of her father she was left alone; friends and relatives deserted her after the grieving period. As a middle-class, educated woman she was surprised to find herself forced into prostitution from her office job.

"My boss initially spoiled me at first," she told Khaleej Times. "[But] now I am in [the sex industry]." Sandra first thought her boss was being gracious, but quickly learned he was grooming her for sex for his own pleasure, and then acting as her pimp.

Many of Pakistan's contemporary sexual mores may have evolved from traditional practices. For example, the polygamy permitted in Muslim society stemmed from the need for larger family units, the better to support familial ties and tend for widows. Until such ancient customs are updated, women such as Sandra will continue to be bought and sold.

It's time for Pakistan to admit that prostitution is doing a roaring trade within its borders, and will continue to prosper until it is addressed in a modern manner. Let us hope that the people and government of this proud Muslim country will stop pretending the problem simply isn't there.

Maid abuse charges dropped
May 22, 2008 07:52pm

US-BASED Human Rights Watch has slammed a Saudi Arabian court decision to drop charges against an employer accused of abusing an Indonesian maid so severely she lost her fingers and toes.

HRW said Nour Miyati had been beaten daily and forced to work long hours without rest for her Saudi employers, knocking out a tooth and damaging one of her eyes.

A judge who reviewed the case in Riyadh on Monday awarded Ms Miyati about $US670 ($A696.47) for her injuries but dropped charges against the wife of her employer, who had earlier confessed to abusing the maid and had been sentenced by a lower court to 35 lashes.

"This outrageous ruling sends a dangerous message to Saudi employers that they can beat domestic workers with impunity, and that victims have little hope of justice,'' Nisha Varia, senior researcher in the women's rights division at HRW, said.

Saudi officials were unavailable for comment on the report.

Ms Miyati had earlier had her fingers and toes amputated because of the delay in receiving care for gangrene and malnourishment, the group said.

There are over a million domestic maids working in Saudi Arabia, the world's biggest oil exporter where many families employ foreign home help.

Rights organisations say many domestic maids work in difficult circumstances, do not know Arabic and often suffer from abuse by their employers.

The Labour Ministry has acknowledged that there were problems with workers' rights, but the Government also often said Islamic law ensured protection for both Muslims and non-Muslims, and reminded foreigners they were guests in the country.

Exeter explosion at Giraffe restaurant: man injured is suspected Islamic extremist
By Duncan Gardham, Security Correspondent and Richard Savill
Last Updated: 10:28PM BST 22/05/2008

A suspected Islamic extremist has attempted to attack a restaurant in a shopping centre in the middle of Exeter.

Nobody in the restaurant was injured in the explosion apart from the bomber
The man suffered cuts to his eye and facial burns in the attack when his device went off in the toilets of the restaurant in the brand new, £230m Princesshay centre.

Police sources believe the man was arming a bomb when it partially exploded in his face. He then tried to detonate a second device in the crowded street outside the restaurant.

Bomb disposal teams have recovered canisters of a sodium-based homemade explosive, it is understood, and there were reports that nails may have been part of the devices.

Article continuesadvertisement

Police sources told The Daily Telegraph the man is a white male, aged 22, from the South West and is thought to be a convert to Islam.

A team from the Counter-terrorism Command at Scotland Yard was travelling to the scene last night as investigations continued.

Devon and Cornwall chief constable Stephen Otter said that a second device was found near the restaurant but refused to comment on a possible motive.

He said: “There were two devices, one on the café and one nearby. We do not know precisely how bad it could have been if they had gone off but it would have been quite serious.

“That is why we are treating this as a serious incident and investigating it quite thoroughly. In terms of motive we will look at all possibilities.”

Eyewitnesses described three explosions going off in the toilets of the Giraffe restaurant, a chain of “global food” outlets.

The explosions happened around 12.50pm as the restaurant was getting ready for lunchtime service.

Architect Peter Lacey, aged 63, and his wife Celia, aged 60, from Exeter had just arrived to have lunch.

He said: “I heard a noise which sounded like a gunshot and at first I thought it was a kitchen accident of some sort.

“About a second afterwards there was another identical sound and maybe a second later a third.

“Afterwards I saw a little piece of orange material which looked as if could have come from a cartridge and which may have been blown under the door.

“The staff tried to get into the toilet but it was locked and they must have called the police.

“They evacuated us very calmly and there were people still eating while the explosions took place but who left their meals and went out.

“I saw a man who I assumed to be him by an ambulance shortly afterwards with police around him and he had blood on his face and upper clothing.

Another diner, who would only be identified as Trudy, said: “It was definitely an explosion, it sounded like the lights were exploding.

“There was a lot of glass. I think it came from the toilet.

“There was concern, I wouldn’t say there was panic, everyone got up and the staff were very good getting everyone out.”

Juliette Joffe, a director of Giraffe which has 21 restaurants across the country, described an explosion inside the restaurant.

Around 15 people would have been working in the restaurant at the time, she said.

“All we know at present is there was an explosion in the Giraffe in Princesshay and the Princesshay has been evacuated.

“Nobody in the restaurant has been injured apart from the person who set it off,” she said.

Deputy Chief Constable Tony Melville said police were called in by the ambulance service who told them there had been a small explosion in a restaurant and someone was injured.

He said one man was in custody with slight injuries which were non-life-threatening. The man was taken to hospital with lacerations to an eye and facial burning.

A Royal Navy bomb disposal unit arrived at the scene and sniffer dogs were brought in as police evacuated large parts of the city centre including Exeter bus station.

The Princesshay development opened last September. The scheme has been heralded as the biggest single investment in regeneration in the city’s history and contains a mix of shops, restaurants and apartments.

Thailand: Five construction workers killed by militants

Bangkok, 24 April (AKI) - Five construction workers were shot and killed by Muslim insurgents on Thursday while they were entering a school in southern Thailand.

The victims "had to construct a fence for a school and were killed as they were getting off a truck," said Acra Tiproch, a Thai army spokesperson. The school, which was closed for a break, is in the southern Thai province of Pattani.

In a separate attack also on Thursday morning, two soldiers were injured when a remote-controlled bomb exploded close to a school building that they were guarding in the Cho Airong district of Narathiwat province.

Yala, Narathiwat and Pattani are three Muslim-dominated provinces in Thailand, which is an overwhelmingly Buddhist country.

State school and teachers in the southern provinces, are viewed as symbols of government authority and are often targeted in attacks carried out by Muslim rebels.

Some 91 teachers have been killed and hundreds injured since the violence first flared in January 2004.

Security guards in charge of protecting the schools have also been victims of the violence.

It is estimated that more than 3,000 people have been killed in the almost daily attacks.

The rebels are fighting for the creation of an independent Islamic state.

Arrested HuJI millitant was planning blast in Delhi

TERROR TRAIL: The man was caught after an intelligence tip-off from Chelmsford Road near Connaught Place.

Jaipur blasts: Suspected HuJI man held in Delhi
The man, whose identity was not revealed, was held from Chelmsford Road.

New Delhi: The Special Cell of Delhi Police recovered three kg RDX, detonators and timers from Delhi's Janakpuri area. The explosives were recovered from near a local madarssa.

The raid was made after the arrest of a suspected HuJI militant from Chelmsford Road near Connaught Place late on Wednesday night.

The HuJI militant's name is Iqbal and he had plans to carry out serial blasts in Delhi.

Iqbal had a consignment of 10 kgs of RDX, out of which only three kgs of RDX have been recovered from him but the rest of the seven kgs RDX is still being searched.

The area was raided after police picked up a HuJI militant suspected to be involved in the Samjhauta blasts as well as the serial blasts in Jaipur.

Iqbal was caught after an intelligence tip-off from Chelmsford Road near Connaught Place.

DCP Special Cell, Alok Kumar had earlier confirmed that the man is being interrogated but said that nothing else can be revealed right now.

Nine bomb blasts at eight sites rocked Jaipur on May 13, killing at least 61 people and injuring 210.

Investigating agencies suspect the role of the HuJI possibly with help from Bangladeshi immigrants settled in Rajasthan.

The Rajasthan police last week released sketches of seven suspects, but their features failed to match the accounts provided by the shop owners who sold the cycles to the bombers.

The help of an expert has been sought to redraw the sketches of the suspected bombers.

Dinosaur tracks found on Arabian Peninsula Wed May 21, 9:02 PM ET

ATHENS, Ohio - Scientists say they have found dinosaur tracks on the Arabian Peninsula, a discovery they say may shed more light on where dinosaurs lived, their migration patterns and how they evolved they way they did.

The discovery of tracks of a large ornithopod dinosaur and a herd of 11 sauropods walking along a coastal mudflat in Yemen was reported in Wednesday's issue of the journal PLoS ONE.

"No dinosaur trackways had been found in this area previously. It's really a blank spot on the map," said Anne Schulp of the Maastricht Museum of Natural History in The Netherlands.

Only a few dinosaur fossils have been reported on the peninsula, including isolated bones from Oman and possible fragments of a long-necked dinosaur from Yemen, Schulp said.

Schulp conducted the study with Ohio University paleontologist Nancy Stevens and Mohammed Al-Wosabi of Sana'a University in Yemen.

Preserved in rocks at the site are the footprints of 11 small and large sauropods — long-necked, herbivorous dinosaurs that lived in the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods — traveling together at the same speed.

A Yemeni journalist spotted one of the trackways in 2003. Stevens, Al-Wosabi and Schulp identified it as the footprint of an ornithopod, a large, common plant-eater that walked on its hind legs.

"It's an exciting find largely because it comes from a part of the world that is poorly known in terms of its vertebrate Mesozoic record," said Peter Makovicky, associate curator of dinosaurs at The Field Museum in Chicago. "This is part of the world with little body fossil record."

Are Plants Alive?
by John D. Morris, Ph.D.

One of the errors most frequently made today, even by Bible-believing Christians, is to try to understand the creation period and processes in terms of today's processes and our own experiences. The same could be said for the periods between the end of creation and the curse, between the curse and the flood, and the flood episode itself. These miraculous times were so very different from today that any effort to understand them by today's standards is doomed to failure.

Today's secular way of thinking includes the concept that there never have been any episodes in earth history dramatically different from things occurring or possible today. The Bible identifies this false way of thinking by the creed of the latter-day scoffers that "all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation" (II Peter 3:4), i.e., that only present processes, operating within the parameters of processes operating today, are responsible for the shaping of the earth's crust and the evolution of all life from non-living chemicals. This concept, of course, denies the truth, for it excludes the creation, the fall, and the flood. The very concept is anti-Biblical, ascribing the creative works of God to "nature" and limiting God's perfect creation to our current understanding of our present world.

Unfortunately, all too many Christians, trained in the secular way of thinking, fall into this trap. While giving lip service to God and creation, they adopt a naturalistic worldview, claiming that God did it naturalistically! This leads to innumerable difficulties and contradictions, scientific, Biblical, and theological.

One such problem relates to the nature of plants and the "lower" animals. The Bible teaches that in the original creation, there was to be no death. Yet God also instructed Adam and Eve, as well as the animals (Genesis 1:29-30) to be plant eaters. Would not the eating of plants constitute death?

The answer to this seeming problem lies in a Biblical understanding of "life," or "living." Note that the Bible makes a sharp distinction between plants and animals. During Day Three of Creation Week, God commanded the inanimate earth to "bring forth plants" (Genesis 1:11,12), while on Day Five, He "created...every living creature that moveth" (v. 21). At this point, and on Day Six to follow, He instituted the concept of giving "life" (Hebrew nephesh) to non-living matter—something He did not do for plants. This required supernatural creation, and the resultant living animal kingdom was something new and different from all that had gone on before.

The Bible never refers to plants as living. They may "grow," or "flourish," but they do not "live." Neither do they "die." The Bible teaches that they may "wither," or "fade," but not "die," since they are not "alive," having neither "life" (nephesh), nor breath of life" (ruach), nor "blood" (i.e. "the life of the flesh is in the blood" [Leviticus 17:11]). This state may be analogous to lack of consciousness, so that, while biologically alive, plants are therefore not Biblically "living." A similar argument can be made for some of the "lower" animals (perhaps some types of worms, sponges, etc.), and certainly for protozoans and viruses. Their "death" would not constitute death of truly living organisms.

So and more also do God unto the enemies of David, if I leave of all that pertain to him by the morning light any that pisseth against the wall.
