China: Unrest in Kashgar, Xinjiang, leaves 15 dead

XINJIANG UNREST

Weekend unrest in Kashgar, in China's western Xinjiang region, has left at least 15 people dead, state media say.

The violence began on Saturday when two men killed a truck driver, then drove his lorry into pedestrians and attacked them with knives, killing six. One of the attackers also died.

On Sunday an explosion killed three people and police shot dead "four suspects", the Xinhua agency said.

Xinjiang has a Muslim Uighur minority and has seen serious ethnic tension.

The BBC's Martin Patience in Beijing says there are reports of further clashes in the city on Sunday.

Migration dispute
A local official was quoted as saying that both of Saturday's attackers were Uighurs.

According to tianshannet.com, a Xinjiang government-run website, the assailants hijacked a truck waiting at traffic lights, stabbing the driver to death before ploughing the vehicle into bystanders.

They then got out of the vehicle and started attacking people at random, the report said.

It said the crowd then turned on the men, killing one of them. The second man was captured.

State-run news agency Xinhua said the attack had been preceded by two explosions.

Xinjiang has a Muslim Uighur minority
Twenty-eight people were reported to have been taken to hospital.

On Sunday, Xinhua reported another explosion, which it said killed three people, including a police officer, and injured three others.

It also said police had shot dead "four suspects" in the city, without giving further details.

This is the second outbreak of violence in Xinjiang in a month.

On 18 July, several police officials and a number of civilians were killed in an attack on a police station in the city of Hotan.

Chinese officials blamed the attack on "terrorists" from the Uighur minority.

Uighur activists said the security forces had provoked clashes by opening fire on a peaceful demonstration.

The majority of Xinjiang's population is ethnically Uighur - who are Muslims with strong cultural ties to Central Asia.

Our correspondent, Martin Patience, says many Uighurs are unhappy about what they say is the repressive rule of Beijing and are angered by the migration of the majority Han Chinese to the region.

In 2009, riots erupted in Xinjiang in which nearly 200 people died after tensions flared between the Uighurs and the Han.

Maiduguri: Nigeria's city of fear
Nigeria's government says it wants to start negotiating with Islamist group Boko Haram, which has been blamed for a series of recent attacks.

The government said a panel would open talks with the group and report back by 16 August.

There was no immediate reaction to the statement from Boko Haram.

The group, whose name roughly translates as "Western education is forbidden", is fighting to topple the government and create an Islamic state.

It led an uprising across a number of states in northern Nigeria in 2009, during which hundreds were killed.

In recent weeks it has been blamed for a series of bombings and shootings in Nigeria's north-east.

The government statement said President Goodluck Jonathan had appointed seven people, including the ministers of defence and labour, to a negotiation committee.

It said the panel's role would be to act "as a liaison between the federal government ... and Boko Haram and to initiate negotiations with the sect".

It would also work with Nigeria's national security adviser to ensure that security forces acted with "professionalism", the statement added.

The governor of the Nigerian state of Borno has admitted that the army has been guilty of excesses during operations to counter Boko Haram.

Most of Boko Haram's recent attacks have been carried out in the Borno city of Maiduguri.

It also claimed responsibility for the deadly bombing of the police headquarters in the Nigerian capital, Abuja, last month.

The negotiation panel is to be inaugurated on Tuesday.

Somali refugee death rates falling in Ethiopia camps: UNHCR

The UN said Friday efforts to reduce mortality rates among Somali refugees arriving at camps in Ethiopia were bearing fruit, with care given to the malnourished cutting death rates by about a third.
"Between June 24 and July 9, the crude mortality rate we had was extremely high, at 7.5 per 10,000 people per day," UNHCR spokeswoman Fatoumata Lejeune-Kaba said, referring to data from the Kobe camp in Dollo Ado.
"Between July 10 and 21, it was reduced, but still extremely high at 5.5 deaths per 10,000 per day.
"This is against the baseline for sub-Saharan Africa of 0.5, and an emergency is declared when it is 1 per 10,000 per day," Lejeune-Kabab said.
The spokeswoman for the office of the High Commissioner for Refugees said all new arrivals were screened to detect signs of malnutrition, and provided with the necessary food to counter the condition.
Some 75,000 Somalis have arrived in the Dollo Ado camps since the beginning of the year, UNHCR figures show, and continue to arrive at a rate of 240 per day.
Around 30 percent of new arrivals have severe acute malnutrition, the UNHCR said.
Similar studies on mortality rates were being conducted in other camps, the agency added.
Nearly half of Somalia's estimated 10 million people are in need of relief assistance, owing to the effects of the relentless violence and the drought that prompted the UN to declare famine for the first time this century.
The UN raised its Horn of Africa humanitarian appeal Friday to $2.48 billion for 12.4 million drought-hit people, warning that famine could spread across the region if donors fail to come to their aid.

Parents balk at 'suicide' schools
By Arash Kabuli

KAPISA PROVINCE - Wednesday's killing of the mayor of Afghanistan's southern city of Kandahar, Ghulam Haydar Hamidi, has once again thrown the spotlight on suicide bombings and the people who carry them out. The attack took place at Hamidi's office compound.

A spokesman for the provincial governor told Radio Free Europe/Liberty that the bomber entered the courtyard of the Kandahar city hall by pretending he was with a group of tribal elders who were there to discuss a land dispute with the mayor. The assailant reportedly had explosives hidden in his turban and detonated them after requesting a meeting with the mayor. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the killing.

Even before the latest attack, Afghan families with children studying at Islamic schools or madrassas across the border in Pakistan are starting to bring them home for fear that they will be recruited as suicide bombers.

Public awareness of the issue has grown since Afghan television stations showed children describing how their teachers in Pakistan groomed them to put on vests packed with explosives and detonate them once they approached vehicles belonging to international or Afghan troops. But their testimonies suggest they were told that they themselves would escape unharmed from such attacks.

In Kapisa province northeast of the capital Kabul, the families of 17 boys have either recalled them from Pakistani madrassas or are refusing to let them go back there.

One father described how he sent his 18-year-old son to Pakistan a year ago, but observed great changes in him when he returned for a break.

"My son is vehemently opposed to the government. He says suicide attacks are considered a superior form of martyrdom and courage in Islam, and that Muslims must wage a jihad against the Jews and their friends," he said.

His son told him that on Fridays, the madrassa students were shown footage of Americans and Britons being beheaded. The father concluded, "I'm not going to allow my son to go back to study in Pakistan again, because I know I will lose him."

Although now associated with the Taliban - whose name reflects their origin as Islamic students - madrassas in Pakistan, and before that British India, have long attracted Afghans in search of a religious education.

When Soviet troops invaded Afghanistan in 1979 and the West responded by backing the mujahideen, madrassas along the Pakistani side of the border played a major role in galvanizing Islamic feeling. This was to backfire when the same madrassas generated the Taliban movement in the 1990s and, after 2001, preached jihad against the Afghan government and its Western allies.

Many Afghan families now fear their children will be caught up in an insurgent strategy of recruiting young people for suicide attacks, as they are both more malleable and less easy to spot than adults.

A 17-year-old in Laghman province, east of Kapisa, who was home on vacation from a madrassa in Peshawar, described the teaching there.

"We were always being told that the Jews and Christians had attacked Muslim countries. They destroy the dignity and faith of Muslims. We were shown footage of the Americans searching people's homes and killing them ... or killing civilians in bombardments. They showed us Israeli massacres in Palestine," he said. "Young people, even children, were therefore prepared to wage jihad against the United States."

The young man said he was keen to return to Peshawar, but his parents had forbidden him to do so and he would have to obey them.

A member of the Taliban shadow administration that is now present in Kapisa, as in many other provinces, justified the recruitment of young people and denied that they were brainwashed.

"Those who say these people are being deceived are puppets of the US. During their studies in Pakistani madrassas, people learn the path of virtue and jihad," the Taliban official said.

"They come to understand the reality that human beings are guests in this world for just a few days, and that they must do something for their religion and the next life. They learn the Islamic precepts in which jihad has high status, and thus they arrive at practical action - they fight for the interests of Islam, they satisfy their God, and they bring illumination to the next life."

Alarmed about Pakistani schools it believes are turning out young suicide bombers, the Afghan government has responded by building madrassas at home.

A spokesman for Afghanistan's Education Ministry, Abdul Sabur Ghofrani, said Islamic schooling was being taken very seriously and the department concerned had been upgrade to being a deputy minister's office. "We have 650 madrassas and other religious schools across the country, and this number will rise to 1,000 in the next three years," he said.

The deputy head of education for Kapisa province, Abdul Rasul Safi, said there were now 14 religious schools there, one for each administrative district and the rest in the main town, Mahmud-i Raqi. Altogether, they catered for over 800 students, he said.

In one district, Tagab, police chief Pacha Gol Bakhtiar said, "The people have promised not to send their children to Pakistan, and we have promised to establish madrassas for them here and train them under the supervision of Afghan scholars."

Choosing the right clerics as teachers will be a task in itself. One Islamic scholar in Kabul, who did not want his name to be used, justified the use of suicide attacks against "infidel countries".

Accusing US and Israeli forces of a list of abuses against the Palestinians and in Lebanon and Iraq, the cleric asked, "Does it make sense to sit quietly in the face of such a pharaoh? As long as the cruelty of the Americans and their friends continues, suicide attacks and other dangerous tactics are both legal and legitimate."

The new madrassas come too late for Taj Mohammad, who lives in Sarobi district south of Kabul but told his story to the Institute for War and Peace Reporting while on a visit to Kapisa.

He described how his wife sent him off to Pakistan to get their 14-year-old son back immediately she heard news reports that children were being trained up as suicide bombers.

"When I got to Pakistan, I stayed in the madrassa for two or three nights. My son's classmates told me that he'd gone off to another madrassa for some kind of competition and that he'd be back. They used various excuses to deceive me," Taj Mohammad said, tears rolling down his face.

"On the third day, the head of the madrassa told me that my son had been martyred in the jihad, and that I had God's blessing. After hearing this news, I was lost to the world; I passed out."

Returning home, Taj Mohammad avoided telling his wife for a few days, but finally had to come out with the truth. "Since that day, my wife has been stricken and cannot move from her bed," he said.

Rights groups: Light sentences send 'chilling' message about religious freedom in Indonesia

JAKARTA, Indonesia - Foreign governments and human rights groups say the relatively light sentences given to 12 men who participated in the brutal killings of three minority Muslim sect members sends a chilling message about growing religious intolerance in Indonesia.

The attack — captured on video and widely circulated on the Internet — showed a frenzied crowd of around 1,500 descending on members of Ahmadiyah with machetes, wooden clubs and rocks to try to prevent them from worshipping.

Police looked on as the crowd pummeled the lifeless bodies of the victims, while others chanted "Allahu Akbar!" or "God is Great!"

The sentences handed down by the Serang District Court on Thursday ranged between three to six months — less than what an ordinary citizen would get for begging in the street or gambling.

U.S. State Department spokesman Mark Toner said in a statement that Washington was disappointed by the "disproportionately light sentences."

"The United States encourages Indonesia to defend its tradition of tolerance for all religions, a tradition praised by President Obama in his November 2010 visit to Jakarta."

Indonesia, a predominantly Muslim and secular nation of 240 million, has a long history of religious tolerance.

But experts say a small, extremist fringe has grown more vocal in recent years and is seeking — with some success — to impose its will on police, the judicial system and the government.

They are emboldened by the inaction of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who relies on the support of Islamic parties in Parliament, and does not want to offend conservative Muslims by taking sides.

The February attack on members of Ahmadiyah — considered deviant by many Muslims here and abroad because they do not believe Muhammad was the final prophet — followed a long string of attacks on religious minorities.

They included the stabbing of a Christian preacher in September 2010 as she tried to lead followers to her boarded-up church outside the capital, Jakarta. There also have been beatings and the burning of houses of worship.

But the attack in the town of Cikeusik was the most brutal — and it was caught on camera.

Dani bin Misra, seen smashing the skull of one of the lifeless victims with a rock, got three months in jail for public incitement, destruction of property and an attack that led to death.

Idris bin Mahdani, who led the mob to the house where followers of the Ahmadiyah sect were gathering, got 5 1/2 months for illegal possession of a sharp weapons and involvement in the attack.

New York-based Human Rights Watch slammed the decision.

It said police failed to conduct thorough investigations and prosecutors — who sought reduced sentences contending the Ahmadiyah provoked the attack — did not call key witnesses.

"Indonesian authorities should be making all-out efforts to bring to justice those who kill people because of their religious beliefs," said Elaine Pearson, the group's deputy Asia director.

"The Cikeusik trial sends the chilling message that attacks on minorities like the Ahmadiyah will be treated lightly by the legal system."

Nun weds Hindu youth in Kerala

They broke many religious and social taboos and braved many threats but their romance finally won the day.

Dr Rybi Varghese, a nun belonging to a convent in Angamaly, and Sanoj, a Hindu youth of Thalikkulam, were chat friends who fell in love after exchanging their innermost feelings online.

After months of rattling out their thoughts on the keyboard, Dr Rybi, who was working in Ukraine, and Sanoj, an accountant with a private firm in Muscat, decided to flout traditions and tie the knot.

Dr Rybi converted to Hinduism at Aryasamajam in Kozhikode on July 19, before marrying Sanoj the following day. The unconventional meeting of hearts came to light when the couple approached the Vadanappally police complaining that Dr Rybi’s brother had threatened her, asking to break off the relation or face the consequences. However, they didn't file any formal complaint.

The Vadanappally police, led by the sub-inspector, V.I. Sageer, then played peacemakers. They interacted with the families and resolved the issue.

“In fact, the couple had already informed their parents and relatives that they had married,” said a police officer.

With the hurdles to their marital life being cleared, the couple bought laddus and distributed it to the cops, who happily ate them and wished them well.

Britain and the United States have issued special travel warnings for the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which begins next Monday, and even chewing gum may be a problem for tourists.

“All Mission employees and family members are advised to exercise extra vigilance and avoid large crowds during the upcoming month of Ramadan,” advised the U.S. Consulate General in Jerusalem.”

The British Foreign Office told its citizens to be sensitive to Muslim customs during Ramadan and singled out the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as a target for terrorists.

“You should be aware that levels of observance of Ramadan will vary in different countries and cultures, but most Muslims will conform to some extent with the requirements of the fast - that they fast between dawn and sunset,” The Foreign Office stated,

“This means they can’t eat, drink, smoke or even chew gum during daylight hours. Muslims use this time of abstention for prayer, contemplation and charitable work.”

However, Ramadan does not stop terrorists – and may even encourage them.

The U.S. State Department said there is a high potential for revenge of the death of al-Qaida founder Osama bin Laden in May. It advised to take "extreme caution" when traveling by sea near the Horn of Africa or in the southern Red Sea "as there has been a notable increase in armed attacks, robberies and kidnappings for ransom by pirates."

Britain warned that “there is a high threat from terrorism” in the UAE, which attracts one million British citizens every year. “We believe terrorists may be planning to carry out attacks in the UAE,” the Foreign Office said.

It also warned women to “take care when walking or travelling alone and use a reputable taxi company, particularly at night…. Drink spiking, known to be used in date rape, can also happen. Consular staff have noted an increase of drink spiking in night clubs in Dubai, resulting in sexual assaults on both men and women. Do not accept drinks from strangers or leave drinks unattended, including non-alcoholic drinks. When in pubs and clubs, stay with your friends and avoid getting separated in the crowd.”

Driving also can be a problem because, in the Foreign Office’s words, “Driving standards in the UAE are not always as disciplined as those in the UK and the corresponding rate of traffic accidents is significantly higher.” A United Nations agency has reported that the likelihood of being killed in traffic accidents in the UAE is seven times higher than in Britain.

40,000 famine-hit Somalis flee to Mogadishu: UNHCRAFP
(5 hours ago) TodayWith relief supplies entering the country currently insufficient to cope with needs, the jostle for food “has caused serious crowd crushes and even some looting.” - AP (File Photo)
GENEVA: Some 40,000 famine-hit people have fled to the Somali capital Mogadishu over the past month in search of food and water, the UN refugees agency said Tuesday.

“Over the past month, UNHCR figures show that nearly 40,000 Somalis displaced by drought and famine have converged on Mogadishu in search of food, water, shelter and other assistance,” said Vivian Tan, spokeswoman for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

“A further 30,000 have arrived at settlements around Mogadishu.

“In total, it is estimated that Mogadishu has received up to 100,000 internally displaced people over the last two months. The daily numbers are still around 1,000 in July,” added the spokeswoman.

With relief supplies entering the country currently insufficient to cope with needs, the jostle for food “has caused serious crowd crushes and even some looting.” As a result, some of the weakest and most vulnerable are left with nothing, despite the best efforts of agencies and charities,” said the UNHCR.

The UN last week declared famine in two parts of southern Somalia.

According to the UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, some 3,500 Somalis cross the border into neighbouring Kenya and Ethiopia every day, adding to the over 740,000 refugees who have already fled across those borders.

“This creates strain on the fragile semi-arid environment, increases tensions with the local host communities and the risk of fire or the outbreak of diseases,” Tan said, speaking of conditions in Kenya.

An estimated 3.7 million people in Somalia – around a third of the population – are on the brink of starvation and millions more in Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda have been affected by the worst drought in the region in 60 years

2011-07-26 01:29:07 Xinhua Web Editor: Zheng

Eight persons died, 50 shops and 28 vehicles were destroyed while many wounded in Saturday's bomb explosion in a northeastern city of Maiduguri in Nigeria when the Boko Haram Islamic sect threw an explosive at a military patrol vehicle.

Though the Joint Task Force troops deployed by the Nigerian government to the north eastern state of Borno had claimed only three of its soldiers sustained injuries, residents maintained eight people actually died in the explosion and the ensuing gun battle between the Boko Haram men and the military troops.

Sources told Xinhua said some members of the Islamic sect had thrown an explosive at a patrol vehicle of the troops in Budum, a settlement located behind the Shehu of Borno Palace.

The Shehu, a popular Nigerian king, is the vice chairman of the Islamic Council in Nigeria, next to the Sultan of Sokoto.

Batima Bukar, a 45-year-old victim of the incident told Xinhua that his hand was broken when he attempted to save an old woman who was almost trapped in the area during the shoot out with the sect.

He disclosed that two corpses were found at the Budum Market roundabout on Sunday morning while another two were discovered at about 6 a.m. local time same day adjacent the area.

Another resident who craved anonymity told Xinhua that she lost her husband and a neighbor, adding that while her husband was hit by stray bullet, their neighbor was a victim of the blast.

The Saturday incident has compelled many of the residents of the area to flee their homes. But the Joint Task Force (JTF) through its spokesperson Col Hassan Mohammed insisted nobody died in the incident.

Meanwhile, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said the worsening security situation in north of Nigeria was disturbing.

The agency the standard of living of the people was daily deteriorating due to the inability of the residents to engage in their economic activities since the Boko Haram uprising heightened in the state.

Northeast zonal information officer for the agency Ibrahim Farinloye said the Boko Haram crisis and face off with the security agencies has brought untold hardship on the people.

He said the federal government through NEMA and other humanitarian actors was reaching out to all the distressed people in the communities in order to cushion the adverse effects of the crisis on the people while equally ease the financial constraint of distressed Muslims for the month of Ramadan.

He disclosed that the agency had been directed by the Federal Government to commence comprehensive relief package to reach out to the distressed people irrespective of religious, ethnic or political affiliation in their present places of residence.

The exercise which was expected to commence on Monday would focus on residents at Abbaganaram, Kaleri, Simari, Dala, Budum, London chiki as well as various villages in and around Maiduguri.

CPM office in temple closed
OUR CORRESPONDENT

Howrah, July 17: A CPM office allegedly set up by force on the premises of a temple of the Matua community near Belur was closed down today.

Trinamul minister Arup Roy and MLA Sultan Singh led more than 1,000 members of the Matua community to the temple.

“We closed down the party office and returned the Santi Devi Hari Mandir temple to the Matua community,” said Singh, the Bally MLA. “The temple had virtually been converted into a CPM party office since 2008,” he said.

Jagat Biswas, organising secretary of Matua Mahasangha’s central committee, also said the CPM had taken possession of the temple in 2008.

However, Arunabha Lahiri, a CPM leader and chairman of the Bally municipality, denied having opened a party office on the temple premises. “The temple belongs to the Matuas and it’s a false propaganda against us,” he said.

Minor Dalit girl gang-raped, murdered in Alwar
TNN Jul 22, 2011, 05.31am IST

ALWAR: A 17-year-old dalit girl was gangraped and brutally murdered in Sadar police station area of Alwar district on Wednesday night. The girl was stragulated by at least four men who have been arrested. The accused had dumped her body on railway tracks after murder.

Police said the victim, a resident of Jatiyana village, had gone out with her cousin in the evening and was returning home when she was intercepted by a person wearing a 'burqa' (veil). "The woman told her that she was scared of something and requested her to accompany her to her house. She told the girl that the house was nearby," a police officer said.

The officer said that the victim sent her cousin home and accompanied the woman. "During the interrogation of the four men, who have been arrested for the crime, it came up that one of them had pretended to be a woman. Soon after the girl started accompanying him, three others came there," said the officer.

He added that the girl soon realized what was happening and tried to attract the attention of others by crying for help, but they gagged her with a piece of cloth.

They took the girl to a forest area and raped her one by one. "Fearing that the girl would tell someone about the incident, they strangulated her and then dumped her body on the railway tracks," the officer added.

He said that they threw the body on the tracks thinking that the death would be considered an accident after it would be run over by a train. However, some animals dragged the girl's body from the tracks.

Meanwhile, the family members of the girl launched a search when she did not return home and informed the police after they could not find her.

"The body was traced about five hours after the murder. Some passers-by informed us late Wednesday night following which a team was rushed there," said the officer.

The police have arrested four men – Iqbal, Mushtaq, Foji and Mussaddi. Interrogation of them is going on.

Tension prevailed in the village after the news of girl's death reached them.

நார்வே பயங்கரவாதி கிறிஸ்துவ பயங்கரவாதியா?

Norwegian Bomber Is Fundamentalist Christian, Officials Say| Print | E-mail
WRITTEN BY R. CORT KIRKWOOD
SATURDAY, 23 JULY 2011 21:00
Norway explosionNorwegian authorities have captured the man suspected of Friday’s bombing in Oslo and shooting at Utoya island, which left 91 people dead. The suspect is Anders Behrin Breivik, 32, whom Norwegian authorities describe as a Christian fundamentalist.
Breivik’s attack on Friday began with a bomb in the capital’s government headquarters, which houses the prime minister’s office. Seven people are believed dead in that attack. But Breivik, apparently, was waiting to do murder at the Island, which is about 20 miles from Oslo. There, he gunned down 84.
Said the Norwegian prime minister, "My childhood paradise that yesterday was transformed into Hell."
Though an Islamic group claimed credit for the bombing, Breivik, apparently, is the only suspect.
What Happened
Breivik’s bomb exploded at about 3:30 p.m. local time in Oslo. As the New York Times noted, the streets around the city’s government center appeared to be Baghdad, Iraq, or Oklahoma City, a reference toatheist Timothy McVeigh’s bombing on April 19. 1995.
At 5:30 p.m., police allege that Breivik, dressed in the police uniform, opened fire at Utoya Island with a “machine pistol,” as authorities described it. The Labor Party, which governs Norway, was holding a summer camp for its youth members.
By the end of the attack, 91 were dead. Police are still searching for bodies in the waters surrounding the island.
It’s a wonder more people weren’t killed im the bombing. The Washington Post reprised a Norwegian newspaper’s account of what Breivik used to carry out the attack:
The Norwegian newspaper Verdens Gang, citing a spokeswoman for agricultural material supplier Felleskjopet, reported that the suspect bought 6 tons of artificial fertilizer — which is highly explosive — some 10 weeks before the attack. Police were alerted to the purchase only after it emerged the man was suspected of the deadly attacks, the Associated Press reported, quoting the newspaper.
The Norwegian VG newspaper reported that police had blocked off a farm in Asta, 100 miles north of Oslo, and were searching it, and Norwegian media speculated that the farm may have been the source of explosives used in the attack on Oslo, which blew out almost every window in the 17-story building that houses the prime minister’s office and severely damaged several other nearby buildings in the government district of Oslo.
The New York Times identified the fertilizer as ammonium nitrate.
Norwegian Profiling
An Islamic group took credit for the attack, the Times reported, and Spielgel online reported that Islamic Internet forums called the attack “good news.” As well, Norwegian authorities, Jihad Watch.com notes, had every reason to believe the attack was the work of Muslim terrorists from al-Qaida.
As Jihad Watch.com noted, Muslim terrorists recently released a handbook on fertilizer bombs and an Islamic terrorist threatened to make Norwegians pay for deporting him. Britain’s Sky News “reported that earlier this year, al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula released a bomb-making handbook which contained notes on how to build fertilizer bombs.”
[Agence France Presse] reported that intelligence police chief Janne Kristiansen said last February that Islamic extremism was a major threat to the country and “our main priority and our main concern.”
Norway, a member of NATO, has some 500 troops in Afghanistan.
Last year police arrested three Muslim men based in Norway who were suspected of planning an attack using explosives, AFP reported.
Norwegian prosecutors earlier this month also filed a terrorism charge against Mullah Krekar, founder of the Kurdish Islamist group Ansar al-Islam, who was accused of threatening a politician with death over his potential deportation from the country.
Krekar had warned that “Norway will pay a heavy price” if he were deported.
But the suspect is not Islamic. The Associated Press quickly noted that Breivik is a “blond, blue-eyed Norwegian,” and Norwegian authorities flatly stated that Breivik is "right-wing and a Christian fundamentalist" who may or may not have gotten help, as the New York Times duly reported:
“We are not sure whether he was alone or had help,” a police official, Roger Andresen, said at a televised news conference, adding: “What we know is that he is right-wing and a Christian fundamentalist.” So far Mr. Breivik has not been linked to any anti-jihadist groups, he said.
Johan Fredriksen, chief of staff for the Oslo police, said officials were “not surprised” that the attacks had been the work of an ethnic Norwegian, a blond, blue-eyed man, saying “we think about scenarios.”
Breivik posted his beliefs on his Facebook page, the Times also reported.
A Facebook page matching his name and the photo given out by the police was set up just a few days ago. It listed his religion as Christian, politics as conservative. It said he enjoys hunting, the video games World of Warcraft and Modern Warfare 2, and books including Machiavelli’s “The Prince” and George Orwell’s “1984.”
There was also a Twitter account apparently belonging to Mr. Breivik. It had one item, posted last Sunday: “One person with a belief is equal to the force of 100,000 who have only interests.”

Twin terror attacks shock Norway

If the bomb blast in Oslo turns out to be a terror attack, it will mark a 9/11 moment for Norway.

Norway has never previously been subjected to serious terrorist attacks.

This is not because the country has been particularly good at protecting itself; rather, it is because it has stayed away from international conflict.

Though a long-standing Nato member, Norway has only recently increased its involvement in military missions in countries such as Afghanistan or Libya.

Consequently, its foreign policy has not made the country many enemies, with Norwegian diplomats often citing the country's commercial whaling as the most controversial issue they have to deal with.

Public access
Norway is an incredibly open society.

The Royal Family is free to move about with limited security, both in the nation's relatively small and peaceful cities, as well as on holiday in the mountains or on the coast.

The country's politicians and business leaders mix freely with ordinary people in a manner rarely seen elsewhere in the world.

Few people have secret addresses and telephone numbers - open the phonebook online and you will find links not only to aerial shots of people's houses and maps of where they live, but also details about their email addresses and their place of work.

This is a society where top politicians, business executives and other celebrities often include their private telephone numbers and home addresses on their business cards.

Even their salaries and the size of their fortunes are made public by the tax authorities once a year, only to be plastered all over the newspapers.

Local newspapers do the same with small-town politicians, local shopkeepers and amateur sports people. The public is free to use the taxman's online search engine to snoop on friends and neighbours' financial affairs.

The post, which in the UK tends to be shoved through the front door, is normally placed in unlocked post boxes outside people's homes, making it easy for anyone with criminal intent to intercept anything from bank statements to medical records.

Goal achieved?
To the outside world, the lives lived by Norway's people, both the elite and ordinary folk, may seem naive.

Though up to now they have not seen any reason to protect themselves.

Like Sweden before the murder of Prime Minister Olof Palme in 1986, the Norwegian people have collectively resisted any calls for greater home security.

To them, living in an open society has been not just a privilege, but also a statement to the rest of the world; a display of how it is possible to live together in peace.

Hans Kristian Amundsen, government minister: "Now the focus is rescuing people"
Such feelings were voiced after the Norwegian publisher of Salman Rushdie's The Satanic Verses, William Nygaard, was shot and wounded outside his home in Oslo in 1993, two months after Ayatollah Khamenei issued the fatwa.

At the time, the political and intellectual elite stressed the importance of resisting the temptation to respond to the fear as it quickly spread through the population by raising the barriers and increasing the intolerance of those from the world outside.

They may well do so again now, though this time might be different.

Norway's attitude to risk might now change, quickly and dramatically, as private individuals withdraw and as central authorities bolster security.

If so, a possible goal of the attackers may well have been achieved, in that they have robbed Norway of its innocence.

14 rioters shot down in Xinjiang attack

HOTAN, Xinjiang - Police shot down 14 rioters who attacked a police station in Hotan city of Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region on Monday, a Communist Party official in Hotan said Wednesday.
The official, who declined to be named, said the attack left four people dead, including an armed police officer, a security guard, a woman and a teenage girl. At least three others were injured.
Rioters hacked security guard Memet Eli to death while they were trying to break into the Na'erbage police station shortly after 12 pm Monday, said Ablet Metniyaz, chief of the police station.
"He is just 25. He planned to get married in September," said Abliz, an officer of the police station.
In addition to Eli, an armed police and two civilians died in the incident, according to Metniyaz, 38, who has been serving as chief of the police station for three years.
The rioters had taken six civilian people and some police staff hostage, and set fire and smashed things in the police station, leaving damaged computers, printers, furniture and clothes scattered around, Metniyaz said.
Shouting frantic religious slogans like "Allah the only God", the rioters ran to the top floor and police opened fire to stop them, said an anonymous policeman with the police station.
When the attack took place, most of the police station's staff were following Metniyaz to visit local residents in an effort to seek their opinions about safeguarding public security.
The rioters had occupied the police station when Metniyaz led his team back.
"I shouted in Uygur language, asking the rioters to stop doing things that run against the law and to settle disputes in peaceful way. But they kept casting gasoline bottles and rocks to us," said Metniyaz.
"I saw the rioters hacking innocent people, some of them got injuries on their faces, noses and ears."
Rioters also attacked the adjacent industrial and commercial bureau, injuring two staff there.
All the rioters were male aged between 20 to 40. They spoke with non-Hotan accent and wore sneakers -- "probably to prepare for running away," said Metniyaz.

A Sikh man told a jury he was beaten up by a group of Muslim-looking men who knocked off his turban and pulled off his necklace and religious pendant.
The 25-year-old alleged victim suffered a cut head and other injuries after being hit to the ground and struck with a weapon, possibly a spanner, it was claimed.
He said he was at home with his mother, in Evington Valley Road, Leicester, at 1.40 pm when he heard banging on his door and shouting.
He looked out to see five or six Asian males, of Muslim appearance and dress, whom he did not know.
A black Audi was also outside.
The man said he felt "scared," and left through the back door, getting into his car at the rear and drove off.
He said at the Evington Valley Road traffic light junction with Ethel Road a man banged on his car bonnet and shouted at him to stop.
He said he also realised the men from outside his home were pursuing him in the Audi and carried on.
The alleged victim told Leicester Crown Court he pulled into the forecourt of a nearby tyre factory hoping to get help.
The Audi blocked him in and as soon as he got out of his car, he was attacked by several men, including one with a "rod or spanner."
The complainant said: "I fell on the ground and felt someone pulling my chain, which had a religious pendant on.
"They were hitting me."
He said he got up and pushed one of them, but ended up back on the ground being hit.
He added: "I don't know who was hitting me on my head with the spanner.
"I can't remember how many times I was hit.
"Someone was twisting my (gold) bangle but it didn't come off.
"While they were hitting me, it (his turban) was knocked off.
"They were saying something like 'killing you' and swearing."
The prosecution allege that one of the assailants was Moshin Khan (20), of Evington Drive, Leicester.
Khan denies jointly causing actual bodily harm or damaging a gold necklace belonging to the alleged victim on Friday, April 23, last year.
He claims that it is a case of mistaken identity and the complainant had wrongly picked him in a police video identification procedure.
The prosecution say the black Audi's registration number was linked to the defendant's address.
Giving evidence, the complainant said he was "sure" he correctly identified Khan as one of the group.
He alleged that after he managed to stand up, the defendant came towards him (unarmed) and tried to hit him.
He told the jury: "I tried to hit him back.
"Then he hit me back and I went back onto the ground."
The court heard the necklace and religious pendant were later found and returned to the complainant.
Mark Achurch, prosecuting, said one of the witnesses claimed he heard members of the group shouting "Allah, Allah" during the alleged attack.
The complainant's injuries included a swollen right eye, a cut to the back of his head and tenderness to his arms and body.
The trial continues.

German priest arrested on sex abuse charges

GERMAN POLICE have arrested a 46-year-old priest who has admitted sexually abusing three boys in the past four years.

The priest is believed to be a repeat offender and was arrested on Saturday before leaving on a summer trip with minors to Taize in France.

After questioning, the man admitted abusing two boys as well as a teenager in the central German town of Salzgitter.

Two of the boys have confirmed the abuse, with one of them last abused in June.

“The boys are suspected of being sexually abused as far back as 2007,” said an investigating officer in the nearby city of Braunschweig.

The case came to light when a mother of one of the boys pressed charges. Her son said that he was abused by the priest as a 10-year-old first communicant. In the other two cases the abuse began in 2007 and continued until last month.

The priest is on remand, with state prosecutors feeling an acute danger of further offences.

They have reopened the case of a 25-year-old who apparently shot himself at the priest’s apartment in 2007, a death ruled a suicide at the time.

The priest has been suspended by church authorities in the diocese of Hildesheim pending a full investigation. Bishop Heinz-Günter Bongartz said yesterday that complaints had been filed against the priest in 2006. They were not of a sexual nature, he said, but when further complaints were made last year the diocese contacted the state prosecutor.

No case was brought due to lack of evidence until renewed complaints in June.

“We made clear to him at the time where the limits lay,” said Bishop Bongartz. “If these new allegations are confirmed, it would be a terrible betrayal of trust. My thoughts are with the victims at this time.”

Police have asked for any other victims of the priest to come forward. They have set up a special investigatory commission under the name “Peccantia”, Latin for “sin”.

This latest abuse case comes 18 months after allegations of abuse at a Jesuit school in Berlin prompted widespread clerical abuse revelations. After a swift investigation, the German Bishops’ Conference revised child protection guidelines and tightened up reporting of abuse to the authorities.

Last week bishops said they would open files going back to 1945 to two independent investigators.

Some 180,000 Germans officially left the Catholic church last year in light of the abuse allegations. Pope Benedict is due to visit his native Germany in September.

Malaysia: Woman Can't Quit Islam

COURT REFUSES TO GRANT 'TEAPOT CULTIST' PERMISSION TO CHANGE RELIGION

NEWSER) – Kamariah Ali may consider herself a member of the Sky Kingdom sect—known as the "teapot cult"—but she is a Muslim under the law, a Malaysian civil court has decided. The court rejected the 60-year-old woman's request to leave Islam to avoid being jailed for apostasy, the BBC reports. Judges decided that the case needs to be heard by an Islamic court, which is extremely unlikely to grant her request to officially quit the religion she no longer follows.
Kamariah had asked the court to declare her freedom to worship, as guaranteed in Malaysia's constitution. The group she belongs to, which built a giant teapot to symbolize its belief in the healing purity of water, is one of numerous sects in Malaysia regarded as heretical by Islamic authorities. Its leader, who considers himself the savior of the world, fled to neighboring Thailand in 2005 after authorities arrested dozens of his followers and demolished the giant teapot.
