Setu debate: Karat backs Karunanidhi
CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat backed Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on the Ram Setu issue saying there was no scientific evidence to prove Adams Bridge is a manmade construction.
He supported Karunanidhi’s stand that the project should not be delayed by such controversies. The CPM leader was speaking to reporters after an informal meeting of CPM leaders in Chennai.
On Karunanidhi’s remarks on Ram, Karat said everyone is free to express his/her opinion.
However, not everyone was as supportive. BJP leader Yashwant Sinha told a TV channel that Karunanidhi would have been “skinned” had he made such remarks about other religions.
Jairam Ramesh meets Sonia
In Delhi, Congress president Sonia Gandhi called Minister of State Jairam Ramesh who had demanded culture minister Ambika Soni’s resignation on moral grounds following the filing of an affidavit questioning Lord Ram’s existence. Other than saying the meeting was routine, Ramesh refused to talk about it.
The Congress also distanced itself from Karunanidhi’s remarks, saying the party’s views on the issue were different.
The BJP found an ally in former prime minister H.D. Deve Gowda who said Lord Rama did live in India, according to historical evidence. “I believe Lord Rama lived in India. One need not create an unnecessary controversy over this matter.”
Meanwhile, in Bangalore, three men were arrested in connection with the attack on the residence of Karunanidhi’s daughter Selvi.
Eleven persons were held for setting ablaze a bus in the neighbouring state which lead to the death of two on Tuesday.
