SCARY FACE: Mixing up amongst civilians, these women were ordered to spy on security forces in J-K

Jammu: Security forces have unearthed the new face of terror. In a stunning confession, a young woman arrested while crossing the Line Of Control (LOC) revealed how hundreds of women were being trained in the terror camps of Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK).

In videos available with CNN-IBN, on being questioned what she saw at the camps across the border, a woman trained to infiltrate said it all.

"There are training camps where over 700 women are being trained," said 23 year-old-Asiya, the wife of Pakistani Army havaldar Mohammad Sajjad.

Asiya was arrested over two months ago while crossing the LoC into Rajouri. Asiya has now disclosed how hundreds of women were being trained in terror camps in PoK.

"In Bimbar camp I saw mujahids training along with women participants. There were over 700 women. They have learnt how to fire. But I do not know how to fire," said the woman.

Senior intelligence officers say that there have been recent inputs that women have been trained to cross over and settle down in Jammu and Kashmir to finally act as spies here.

Asiya reportedly had been sent to gather information on the deployment of Indian forces at the Line of Control. She has also confessed that Pakistani army and intelligence agencies train militants.

"There are camps in, Bimar, Kotli, Sensa. In Sensa, the Army trains the mujahids and in Kotli it is the agencies that train them. But in Bimbar it is the outsiders," provided Asiya.

The women read, study and undergo training sessions on using firearms, said Asiya. So, clearly the entire operation goes on under the garb of education and schooling.

Asiya had been arrested on November 13 last year and ever since then her confessions have revealed the active role of women in terror networks.

In March 2008, two women had been arrested in Doda as Lashkar's over the ground workers.

In 2007, Nahida Altaf, a law student was also arrested for allegedly working for Hizb-ul-Mujahideen.. but Asiya's chilling confessions have proved that terror really does have a new face altogether.

Non-violence can't tackle terror: Dalai

The Dalai Lama, a lifelong champion of non-violence on Saturday candidly stated that terrorism cannot be tackled by applying the principle of ahimsa because the minds of terrorists are closed.

"It is difficult to deal with terrorism through non-violence," the Tibetan spiritual leader said delivering the Madhavrao Scindia Memorial Lecture here.

He also termed terrorism as the worst kind of violence which is not carried by a few mad people but by those who are very brilliant and educated.

"They (terrorists) are very brilliant and educated...but a strong ill feeling is bred in them. Their minds are closed," the Dalai Lama said.

He said that the only way to tackle terrorism is through prevention. The head of the Tibetan government-in-exile left the audience stunned when he said "I love President George W Bush." He went on to add how he and the US President instantly struck a chord in their first meeting unlike politicians who take a while to develop close ties.

Christian Girls Drugged and Sold As Sex Slaves in Pakistan
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Posted GMT 1-13-2009 20:15:18
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Washington-DC based human rights group, International Christian Concern (ICC) www.persecution.org has learned that two Christian girls in Pakistan have finally been rescued after two Muslim men kidnapped them two months ago, raped them repeatedly, forcibly converted them to Islam, and sold them to other men as sex slaves.

Sisters Parvisha, 18, and Sanam, 14, received a call in November 2008 from their neighbor, Muhammad Irfan, offering them training in cosmetology and jobs in his beauty salon. Parvisha, the oldest of seven children, convinced her father, Pastor Sharif Alam, to allow her to take the opportunity so that she could help support their struggling family. Irfan told the girls that he would come to pick them up since they did not know where his shop was.

Kidnappers Drug, Rape, and Force Sisters to Accept Islam

On November 12, 2008, Irfan picked the girls up with the help of another man, Muhammed Mehboob, drove them 30 minutes away from home and stopped to get drinks. The girls' drinks were heavily drugged and when the sisters came to they found themselves locked in a small hotel room almost 500 miles away from their home in Gujranwala. At gunpoint, the girls were told that if they tried to escape or made any noise they and all of their family would be killed. During the night, each man raped both girls.

The next day the men drove the sisters to Karachi where they stayed at Mehboob's brother-in-law's house. There they repeatedly raped both girls over several days and then took them to an Islamic religious school where they forced them to convert to Islam. Parvisha and Sanam were given Muslim names and told that if they cooperated they would be released soon.

Irfan and Mehboob then took the sisters to a local law office. They met with two lawyers, Nayer Zia-Ul-Din and Kokab Sahab-Ul-Din, and told them that both girls had embraced Islam and wished to stay in a government run shelter home for women. The lawyers asked the girls to sign a blank sheet. Irfan told the girls that the lawyers would present them in the court tomorrow and then they would be free to go. Irfan and Mehboob then left, leaving the girls with the two lawyers.

Lawyers Rape Parvisha after Promising a Safe Place to Stay

The lawyers told Parvisha and Sanam that since they had no place to spend the night, they could come with them and stay with their family. They took the girls to their apartment but there were no other family members present, and when the girls asked about it, they were told that everyone was attending a family function and would be back before midnight. They gave them a room to sleep.

The lawyers waited until both girls fell asleep and then dragged Parvisha into another room where they raped her. Sanam woke up when she heard someone crying and yelling for help. She ran out of the room and saw both lawyers inserting electrical equipment into Parvisha's private parts.

While Sanam was looking for a weapon she could use to defend her sister, she saw a cell phone lying on the table, grabbed the phone and dialed the emergency mobile police number. Within no time the police arrived and arrested Kokab Sahab-Ul-Din. An FIR was registered against him. Parvisha was immediately taken to the hospital. Sanam called her father from the police station, informing him of the situation. Pastor Sharif Alam rushed to Karachi to bring his daughters back home.

Muslim Mob Defends Rapists, Attacks Girls' Father

Pastor Alam then contacted a Christian legal group called CLAAS for help. On December 31, the CLAAS team visited Pastor Alam and his family to ascertain what had happened. While they were still talking to the victims and their family a large crowd of about 35 people gathered outside the house. They chanted for the pastor to hand the newly "converted" girls over to the custody of local Muslim authorities.

The crowd quickly became hostile and started throwing bricks and stones at Pastor Alam's house. When Pastor Alam and a representative of CLAAS went out to talk to the crowd, someone shot at them but hit a bystander.

Immediately, Pastor Alam called the local police, but not before the mob had seized Pastor Alam's son Sheraz and severely beat him. The police arrived as the angry mob was trying to break into Pastor Alam's house and dispersed the crowd, arresting three people responsible for the attack.

Since then, Pastor Alam has reported that his son in-law, Stian Akram Khokhar, has been missing. He believes that the Irfan and Mehboob are responsible and are threatening him to back off the case.

On January 2 both girls gave official statements to the local Magistrate. They stated that they were abducted from their home, raped and then forcibly converted to Islam, and that they want to live and die as Christians and at no cost will leave their family.

Please pray for Parvisha and Sanam and their family. Pray that God would strengthen their faith and heal their wounds. Pray that those responsible for these heinous crimes would be caught and punished appropriately.

Christians in Pakistan are often targeted not only for their faith but because they live in poverty and have little means to defend themselves. Please call the Pakistani embassy in your country and ask them to work harder to protect the rights of religious minorities.

Al Qaeda terrorists have been left fearing the Black Death plague after it wiped out at least 40 insurgents at an Algerian training camp, it was reported today.
The horror disease, which killed 25 million people in medieval Europe, is understood to have been found in a militant’s body dumped at a roadside.
Terror group AQLIM (al Qaeda in the Land of the Islamic Maghreb) was forced to turn its shelter in the Yakouren forests into mass graves and flee, it has been claimed.

Hideout: Terrorists in Ouzou, Algeria, above, have been forced to flee the plague

Now al Qaeda chiefs are said to fear the plague has been passed into other cells - and possibly Taliban fighters in Afghanistan.
Many insurgents may choose to surrender for treatment rather than die a horrible death.
‘This is the deadliest weapon yet in the war against terror,’ a security source told The Sun:
‘Most of the terrorists do not have the basic medical supplies needed to treat the disease.
‘It spreads quickly and kills within hours. This will be really worrying al-Qaeda.’
Medieval terror: The Black Death killed 25 million people in Europe in the 1300s

The new plague epidemic is said to have begun in AQLIM’s cave hideouts of in Tizi Ouzou province, 90 miles east of the capital Algiers.
AQLIM is the largest and most powerful al Qaeda group outside the Middle East and trains Muslim fighters to kill British and American troops.
Its boss Abdelmalek Droudkal claims to command around 1,000 insurgents and masterminded the bombing the UN headquarters in Algiers in 2007, killing 41.
Black Death comes in various forms and was one of the deadliest pandemics in human history when it struck in the 1340s killing 75 million people across North Africa, Asia and Europe.
Bubonic Plague is spread by bites from infected rat fleas. Symptoms include painful boils in the groin, neck and armpits.
Quick-spreading: The plague virus, above, is easily caught and kills within hours

In Pneumonic Plague, airborn bacteria spread like flu. Without medication it can be deadly.
Although plague is virtually unheard of in developed countries, the World Health Organisation reports several thousand cases a year.
These occur mainly in southern Asia, southern Africa and central America.
Between 1989 and 2003 there were more than 38,000 cases, which caused 2,845 deaths in 25 countries.

PANAJI: "Frame a temple protection law", was the demand echoed by nearly 70,000 Hindus gathered at the SAG ground at Campal on Saturday for a
meeting of the Goa Akhil Mandir Suraksha Samitti.

Over 20 bus loads of members of various Hindu organisations descended on SAG ground to hear their leaders condemn the recent series of temple desecrations in the state.

As huge crowds blocked roads that led to the ground, some buses had to be diverted.

The resolution passed at the end of the meeting also demanded that the miscreants who desecrated the temples should be arrested immediately. The leaders also warned artists not to resort to distortion of figures of Hindu gods and goddesses.

The meeting also demanded that the government ban killing of cows all over Goa and that all grants to Haj pilgrims should be stopped. The demands also included reinstatement policemen who were transferred after they arrested persons from a madrassa in Vasco.

The Goa Akhil Mandir Suraksha Samitti also asked for a new law to stop conversions. Shankaracharya Shree Vidyanarmishmabarathi Swami while addressing the crowd said that Hindus should not vote in exchange for money but only support those candidates who are willing to provide Hindus their support.

He said that Hindus will be strong only if they unite and urged the community to cast 100% of their votes.

He also called upon Hindus to follow the age old Hindu vaitik dharma. Shree Acharya Dharamendraji said, "Governments do not work if they are dealt with paper work. They have to be shown muscle power." He said that every Hindu should visit a temple at least once in 24 hours. He further said that Muslims who do not consider India their country should be isolated.

Swami Brahmeshanand of Goa said that Hindus should work towards strengthening temples.

Among the leaders present were Karveer Pithadish Jagatguru Shankaracharya Shree Vidyanarmishmabarathi Swami, Shree Acharya Dharamendraji Maharaj Swami (Jaipur Panchapithadish), Shree Vishweshthirtha (Pejawarpith Udupi) and Shree Bhrameshanand Swami (Tapobhumi pithadish).

Others present at the convention were Vishwa Hindu Parishad international vice-president Ashok Chowgule; Goa Rashtriya Swayam Sevak Sangh head Subhash Velingkar; Hindu JanJagruti convenor Jayesh Thali; Hindu Suraksha Samitti convenor Rajendra Velingkar; Bajrang Dal convenor Vinayak Chari and presidents of other mandir samitis.

Claims of abuse by priests double
FAIRBANKS: Allegations now total 292 against the diocese.

FAIRBANKS -- Since The Fairbanks Catholic Diocese filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last year, the number of people alleging sexual abuse by diocesan priests and church workers has more than doubled.

The diocese filed for bankruptcy last March. Since then another 152 people have come forward and filed allegations with the court. That brings the latest tally to 292 people claiming they were sexually abused by Catholic clergy from the 1950s to 1980s, officials said.

The court imposed a deadline of last Dec. 2 to file further abuse claims.

An attorney for many of the people alleging sexual abuse said some of the new allegations involve offenders who hadn't been named before.

Anchorage attorney Ken Roosa also said that although the Fairbanks diocese is now legally protected from further claims, victims can and are still levying legal claims against the Society of Jesus -- the Jesuits -- which provides priests for the Northern Alaska mission diocese.

Ronnie Rosenberg, the diocese's legal coordinator, said the Fairbanks diocese is still working on liquidating assets, selling things and getting appraisals to meet bankruptcy requirements. In Chapter 11 cases, an organization keeps running while coming up with a plan for repaying those to whom it owes money.

"These are complex cases with a lot of people trying to garner assets and figure out a plan," Rosenberg said.

"We're trying to figure out how this can happen so the diocese can continue to operate and the plaintiffs can get compensated. It's in everyone's interest to have that happen," he said.

Previous to filing for bankruptcy protection last winter, the Fairbanks diocese had settled with 23 victims.

The allegations against the diocese claim sexual misconduct by priests or church volunteers that stretches back decades, from the early 1980s to the 1950s.

"We acknowledge that harm was done to people and this is, we think, the most pastoral way to address those hurts," a diocese official said in February about the bankruptcy filing.

In late 2007, the Jesuits and 113 victims of sexual abuse by Catholic clergy reached a $50 million agreement to settle claims.

The Anchorage diocese, among many others nationally, has had its own sexual-abuse scandals.

This decade the Anchorage diocese has paid out more than $1.5 million, including payment from insurance policies, to address sexual abuse claims. The diocese has sold commercial property and the home of its archbishop to raise money for the settlements.

Allegations have included a former Anchorage priest and a former Kenai priest. The abuse in some cases occurred decades ago.

ABOMEY, Benin (Reuters) - Voodoo priests in Benin offered sacrifices and prayers to gods and ancestors on Saturday to seek an end to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and to other wars in Africa and elsewhere in the world.

The small West African state sandwiched between Togo and Nigeria is the home of the ancient Voodoo religion, which was later carried by slaves to the Americas where it survives in different forms in countries like Brazil, Haiti and Cuba.

Addressing devotees at Abomey, 145 km (90 miles) north of Cotonou, voodoo high priest Dah Aligbonon referred to the conflict in Gaza during ceremonies to celebrate Benin's national voodoo day, a festival which draws hundreds of foreign visitors.

"All wars, which we deplore, have their origin for the most part in religious misunderstandings," said Dah Aligbonon.

After sacrificing a cock, spilling its blood on the ground in honour of deities and ancestors, the high priest invoked their aid to end conflict in Gaza, in Somalia, in Democratic Republic of Congo and "everywhere where peace is under threat."

"If there is no tolerance, religious hatred will spawn what is happening today in Palestine, where dozens of infants and innocents are paying for the intolerance of their parents," he added, speaking after traditional chants and dancing.

He called for a dialogue between religions in the world.

The voodoo priests, through the casting of cowrie shells, also consulted an oracle, which made a prediction for the year

NAKED LUNCH: Blow daddy
Friday, 02 Jan, 2009 | 12:46 PM PST |
Nadeem F. Paracha

Daddy?
Yes, son.
Are we going to have a war with India?
Perhaps.
Oh, goody. We will thrash them, right? Like we did in 1857!
It wasn’t in 1857, son.
Oh, okay. But whom did we thrash in 1857?
The British, son…
And the Hindus too, right?
Well…
Did Quaid-i-Azam fight in that war along with Muhammad bin Qasim and Imran Khan?
No, son. The Quaid and Imran were born much later and Muhammad bin Qasim died many years before.
Then who ruled Pakistan in those days?
There was no Pakistan in those days, son.
But there was always a Pakistan! It has been there for 5,000 years!
Who have you been talking to, son?
No one. I’ve just been watching TV.
It figures.
Daddy, why are all these people against us Arabs?
Arabs? But we aren’t Arabs, son.
Of course we are because our ancestors were Arabs!
No, son. Our ancestors were of the subcontinental stock.
Sub-what?
Never mind. You seem to like wars, son.
Yes. I like to watch them on TV.
But real wars are fought outside the TV, son.
Really? How is that possible? What sort of a war is that?
Never mind.
Daddy, you look worried.
Of course, I am, you little warmongering punk!
Daddy! Why are you scolding me?
Because TV is talking rot and so are you!
Daddy, are you supporting Hindus?
No!
Daddy, have you become a kafir?
Keep quiet! No more TV for you! Go watch a movie on DVD or listen to a CD.
Can’t do that.
But we have so many DVDs and CDs, son.
Not any more.
What do you mean?
I burned them all.
What?!
I burned them all.
I heard that! But why?
They spread obscenity.
Oh, God. Son, go do your homework. What happened to that science project you were working on?
It’s almost complete.
Good boy. What are you making?
A bomb.
What?!
A bomb.
I heard that! But why?
Because I am a true Muslim who hates America.
But only last week you wanted to go to Disney Land.
That’s different.
How come?
Mickey Mouse is Muslim.
No, he isn’t.
Is so. He converted when he heard azaan on the moon.
On the moon?
Yes. Because the earth is flat and…
What??
The earth is…
I heard that!
Daddy, do you want to see my science project, or not?
Gosh, that bomb? But your science teacher will fail you.
No, she wont.
Really?
Yes. I plan to blow her up as well.
God, what is wrong with you? Go call your mother!
She can’t come.
Why not?
I’ve locked her in the kitchen.
But what for?
A woman’s place is in the kitchen. I will not let her out until she covers herself up peoperly!
But she’s your mother!
She’s also a woman!
So?
So she should be hidden.
Hidden from whom?
The whole world and Tony.
Tony?
Yes, Tony.
But Tony’s a cat.
Yes. But he’s male.
Son, have you gone mad?
No. By the way, I’ve made sure Kitto starts covering up as well.
Kitto?
Yes, Kittto.
But Kitto’s a cat!
Yes. But a female cat.
But she’ll suffocate.
Oh, she’s already dead.
What?
She’s already dead.
I heard that! But how?
I buried her alive.
You what?
Yes. To avenge Tony’s honour. But now I will behead Tony.
But why?
To save mom’s honour!
Oh, God!
Don’t say that. Always say Allah.
What’s the difference?
Daddy, do you want to be beheaded too?
No!
Do you want to be stoned to death?
No!
Do you want to be flogged?
No!
Do you want to get your arms chopped off?
No!
Then stop asking silly questions. By the way, I won’t call you daddy anymore.
What will you call me then?
Whatever that is Arabic for daddy.
I don’t know any Arabic, son.
That’s because you are a kafir.
Who the heck are you to tell me who I am, you little fascist twit!
What’s a fascist?
An irrational, violent, self-righteous mad man!
W... aaaaaaa...
Why are you crying?
You scolded me.
Okay, I’m sorry. You have to be tolerant and rational, son. Now be a good boy and go read a book instead of watching TV.
I have no books.
Of course, you do. I bought you so many books.
I burned them.
What?
I burned them.
But why?
They were all in English.
So?
It’s a non-Muslim language!
But we are speaking English, aren’t we?
W... aaaaaaa…
What now?
Zionists made me forget my Arabic.
But you never knew any Arabic, son.
W... aaaa… yes, I did until you and mommy gave me the polio drops… aaaaa…
Okay, tell me, can you do me a favour?
Sure, dad.
Can you blow up something for me?
Oh, goody! Of course, dad. What should I blow? A CD shop, a hotel, a school...?
No, no, something a lot more sinister.
Mom?
No, no…
What then?
The TV set!
What?
Blow the TV set.
I heard that! But why?
Just do it!
I see. Dad?
Yes.
You’re so unconstitutional!

Bali students celebrate Saraswati Day
The Jakarta Post , Denpasar | Sat, 01/03/2009 2:26 PM | National

Balinese celebrated the Saraswati Day on Saturday, a day when the Hindus praise and thank the goddess of knowledge for bestowing the ability to read, write and understand nature upon humans.

Thousands of students all across the island participated in the celebration, wearing traditional Balinese costumes and prayed together at their schools in the morning.

Some of the students later joined a mass of prayers at the Agung Jagatnata Temple in Denpasar where they performed traditional musical instruments.

Hindus celebrate the Saraswati Day once in 210 days and give young coconut leafs as an offering to the gods in the event. In Bali, most schools and universities place Dewi Saraswati statue in front of the buildings as a symbol of knowledge and technology. (ewd)

Malaysia not to free Hindraf leaders
4 Jan 2009, 1008 hrs IST, PTI

NEW DELHI: The Malaysian government has no immediate plans to review the detention of five Indian-origin leaders, who were arrested under a
controversial law for organising an unprecedented public protest against alleged marginalisation of the ethnic Indian community.

Malaysia has kept in detention the Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) leaders since last one year under the Internal Security Act (ISA), which allows authorities to hold people for indefinite period without trial.

Malaysia's human resource development minister S Subramanian said the release of the Hindraf leaders will depend on the recommendation of a review board which meets once in six months.

"We have a system of reviewing the (release of) those who were arrested under the act. This is done on a periodic basis on every six months," the visiting minister said when asked about release of the detained leaders.

The review board met few months back and decided against releasing the leaders. Its next meeting is expected to take place after couple of months.

Subramanian said the board comprising neutral members meets once in six months and if it suggests releasing them, then the government will set free the detainees.

"When their findings suggest that timing is appropriate for such release to be made, then they will be released," he said without specifying timing of their release.

Hindraf, which has been spearheading agitation demanding more rights for ethnic-Indians, came into international focus after it organised an unprecedented public protest in November 2007 against alleged marginalisation of the community.

Is Portland's Hindu statue a looted antiquity?
10:00 AM, January 4, 2009

The often abstract debate over how strict museums should be about shunning ancient artworks of questionable origins -- lest they wind up owning pieces that have been looted and illegally smuggled -- now wears the familiar face of the Hindu elephant god, Ganesha.

A 1,000-year-old stone stele of the god is scheduled to be unveiled at the Portland Art Museum in Oregon on Valentine's Day. Having already drawn criticism from the anti-looting advocacy group SAFE --Saving Antiquities for Everyone -- the Ganesha could soon be exhibit A in the back-and-forth between those who favor a hard line against collecting ancient works whose paths since before 1970 are murky, and those who think it makes more sense to give museums some leeway when hard proof is lacking.

Guidelines adopted in June by the Assn. of Art Museum Directors (AAMD) call for museums to research carefully whether an object they want left its country of origin before November 1970. That's when the United Nations adopted rules to stem cultural looting.

But when the facts nevertheless remain hazy, the AAMD permits museums to make a judgment call on whether to acquire a piece.

When a work is acquired despite doubts, it's expected to be publicized via an Object Registry on the AAMD website. An image is to be posted, along with what's known about the object's past ownership. The idea is to solicit missing information, and to give individuals or nations-of-origin a chance to claim an object as looted goods. The Ganesha stele is the first, and so far only, artifact to be posted on the registry.

The Portland Art Museum bought the piece at auction from Christie's in September; eight years earlier, it had been sold by Sotheby's. "I can't trace its provenance prior to ... the year 2000," admits Maribeth Graybill, curator of Asian art. But leaders of the Portland museum, which follows the AAMD policy, decided to make the purchase.

Here's how their thinking went:

.

Although it's "a fine example" of its style and period, the Ganesha isn't a rare item, Graybill said, so adding it to a collection in Oregon creates no gap in the art-historical record available to scholars and the public in India. Also, she said, it has lost any sacred attachment to its place of origin: Muslim invaders 800 years ago destroyed all the Hindu and Buddhist temples in northeastern India, so there is no existing ruin to which it could be restored. Also, Graybill said, in South Asian faiths, an image ceases to be sacred "if it is not actively venerated," so the Portland museum feels it isn't violating religious sensibilities by owning the Ganesha.

The museum, she said, balanced "very real concerns about cultural properties against a desire to be a place where the people of Oregon can have encounters with some of the world's most moving and thought-provoking cultures."

When the stele goes on display, Graybill added, it will be "a way to say that India is going to matter at the Portland Art Museum," as well as an opportunity to continue the public discussion of the ethical issues surrounding the antiquities trade and museums' role in it.

Paul Kunkel, a member of SAFE's board, said the Ganesha case shows that "the AAMD guidelines are not nearly as strong as they appear to be," given that a museum subscribing to them could buy a work "not knowing anything" about where it was before 1970.

Graybill said she is still trying to find out more about the stele, having asked other experts to provide information or leads if they can -- so far with no luck. She said she recently wrote to Sotheby's requesting that the auction house look more deeply into past ownership documents she previously was told could not be located.

So far, the only response generated from posting the Ganesha on the AAMD's Object Registry, she said, has been Kunkel contacting her to complain that its acquisition was ill-advised, and notes from some museum-world colleagues, "saying, 'Congratulations, we're glad to see somebody making use of this new mechanism.' "

"We would like to know as much about it as possible," Graybill said, then added, with a laugh, "Our hope, of course, is that it's not looted."

10 hurt as Maoists attack Pashupati temple staff

Maoists attacked the bhandaris and some local devotees in the temple premises.

Kathmandu: About 100 Maoist cadres on Sunday attacked the Pashupatinath temple caretakers who were protesting appointment of local priests in place of Indians, injuring 10 people in their latest assault on the shrine.

The attack came even as the ruling party activists faced flak after storming the temple earlier this week to install Nepalese priests defying a Supreme Court stay order on removal of Indian priests, who had been overseeing traditional rituals at the shrine for the past 300 years.

The local bhandaris, or temple caretakers, who vowed to launch a struggle to save the temple from "Maoist intrusion", faced the wrath of the partymen as they were set to organise a press conference, Kantipur online reported.

Around 100 Maoists attacked the bhandaris and some local devotees in the temple premises, injuring 10 people, including a member of the state-owned Nepal Television crew.

The fresh assault came hours after Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' said he did not intend to displace the South Indian 'Bhatta' brahmins, who had overseen rituals at the temple for the past 300 years.

The appointment of Nepalese priests in place of Indians was a "mere coincidence" and not targeted at the latter, Prachanda said adding, the issue has been "pointlessly politicised".

Serial blasts rocked Guwahati, 5 killed, 51 injured
1 Jan 2009, 2109 hrs IST, Bikash Singh, ET Bureau

GUWAHATI: Serial blasts rocked Guwahati early evening on New Year's Day, killing five people and severely injuring 51 others as Assam opened its A security man inspects the garbage bin where an IED blast took place, in Guwahati on January 1, 2009.

The three blasts, masterminded by Ulfa's 709 Batallion, at Birubari, Bhootnath and Bhangagarh happened even as the state was awaiting the landing of home minister P Chidambaram at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi airport. The third blast which was the most powerful of the three, took place barely 200 metres from the Times of India office in the city.

Chidambaram's most crucial engagement in Guwahati happens to be the Thursday evening and Friday morning meeting of the unified command, which is the apex counter insurgency body in the north east. The meeting would also have chief minister Tarun Gogoi participating.

It is strange that considering the importance of the event and the fact that Thursday was New Year's Day, the state security could have been so slack as to allow this sort of extreme terror manifest itself yet again. The security lapse was unpardonable also in the context of the fact that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is due in Guwahati on Friday morning and that he has a meeting with Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi on the day. Considering that the city is unsafe, the meeting is scheduled within the airport complex itself. The prime minister will thereafter go to Shillong to attend the Indian Science Congress.

The last serial blasts took place in the city just two months ago on October 30, 2008, and had taken the city completely unawares. This time too, Guwahati was celebrating the New Year and the streets were full of revellers, eager for yet one more evening of fun. On October 30, the nine blasts had claimed 89 lives and left over 500 innocent people injured.

DIG, Assam Police, G.P Singh told ET :"ULFA is behind the blasts, we have intercepted messages". The first blast went off at about 2.35pm in a garbage bin in the Birubari area. The second blast took place around 5.15pm at Bhootnath in a teeming market place. Just 15 minutes later, the biggest of them all, rocked Bhangagarh, where 20 metres away was a mosque and just opposite the latest Big Bazaar shopping mall.

Like the October 30 blasts, the explosion at Bhangagarh also took place adjacent to a flyover. Intelligence agencies said that the explosions were designed to be triggered just prior to the home minister's visit to the city.
Chidambaram was whisked away to Raj Bhawan as soon as he landed. He had detailed discussions with Mr Gogoi.

"The timing of the blast was made with precision. The Bhootnath market place is just few metres away from the road which the home minister would have taken to reach Raj Bhavan. The home minister reached Guwahati around 6.30 pm. Maybe, the aim of the blasts was to attract the attention of the Union government" said The aim of the blast is to get the notice of government of India," intelligence sources told ET.

There was complete confusion in Guwahati after the blasts, with the city going back into its customary shell and people hurried home.
