A Catholic priest is being held at the Kabale Police Station for allegedly battering a 17-year-old girl.

Rev. Fr. Augustine Safari, the parish priest of Maziba Church, was last week rescued by the Police from a mob that threatened to lynch him.

Safari and his co-accused Fr. Tarasis Tumuhereza, who is on the run, are accused of allegedly battering and injuring Plexida Natukunda.

The Kabale Police criminal investigations chief, Silver Tumwesigye, on Friday said the victim is alleged to have stolen an unspecified amount of money in form of offertory.

But Natukunda, a Senior Four student of Bishop Gay Secondary School, said she had personal differences with the priests.

Her brother, John Sande, said she did domestic chores for the priests during her holidays and Safari would in turn pay her school fees.

Natukunda's father, Venacio Ndyanabo, a catechist at Karweru Catholic Church said: "We are shocked and hurt that Natukunda was beaten and tortured by the priests."

Safari said: "I could not beat a girl I pay fees for. We hope to settle the matter with her parents."

The district chairman, Adison Kakuru, and the resident district commissioner, Capt. James Mwesigye, have tried to mediate between Natukunda's relatives and Safari.

Natukunda was referred to Kabale Hospital.
