திராவிட முன்னேற்றக் கழக தலைவர் கலைஞர் மு கருணாநிதி வாயை திறக்கும் போதெல்லாம், வடக்கில் காங்கிரஸ் ஓட்டு பனாலாகிறது என்று அதிர்ந்துவிட்ட காங்கிரஸ் அவசர அவசரமாக கலைஞருக்கு போன் செய்து வாயை மூடிக்கொண்டு இருக்க கேட்டுக்கொண்டுள்ளது.

Congress tells Karunanidhi not to comment further on Ram

NEW DELHI: Alarmed by the Ram Setu controversy snowballing into a political issue, Congress has quietly conveyed to alliance partner M Karunanidhi the need for silence on the sensitive matter.

As the Tamil Nadu chief minister's plain speak on Ram evoked a strong rejoinder from the BJP, Congress managers feared that the DMK boss's rationalist approach could provide political fodder to the main opposition party.

Aware of the possibility of the issue being exploited by saffron outfits like the VHP and Bajrang Dal to the BJP's political advantage in northern states, the Congress leadership is learnt to have requested Karunanidhi to refrain from making such remarks.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh called up the CM on Thursday ostensibly to express concern over the attack on his daughter's house in Bangalore a few days ago. The PM assured Karunanidhi of adequate security at his daughter's residence.

It is, however, not known if the Ram Setu issue also came up during the talk. Interestingly, Congress spokesman Abhishek Singhvi said, "On the sensitive issue of Ram Setu, the less said the better." He made it clear that Congress had already adopted this approach. "If you look at the Congress statements and that of others, you will see the difference," Singhvi said.

Observers pointed out that Karunanidhi had already modified his position by suggesting that he had no objection if the Centre chose to dredge an alternative sea channel sparing Ram Setu.
