மும்பை : ஜனாதிபதி தேர்தலில் ஆளும் ஐக்கிய முற்போக்கு கூட்டணி சார்பில் போட்டியிடும் வேட்பாளர் பிரதீபா பாட்டீல் மீது பல்வேறு குற்றச்சாட்டுக்கள் எழுப்பப்ட்டுள்ளன. இதில் பிரதீபா பாட்டீல் மற்றும் அவரது சகோதரர் தொடர்புடையே ஒரு கொலை வழக்கு விசாரணை மும்பை ஐகோர்ட்டில் நடந்து வருகிறது. இந்த வழக்கு இன்று காலை விசாரணைக்கு வந்தது. இதைத்தொடர்ந்து வரும் ஜூலை 30ம் தேதிக்கு வழக்கு விசாரணையை தள்ளிவைத்து நீதிபதி உத்தரவிட்டார்.

பிரதீபா பட்டீல் ஜனாதிபதியாக ஆகிவிட்டால், அதற்கு பின்னர் அவர் மீது கொலை குற்றம் நிரூபிக்கப்பட்டால், தனக்கு தானே "ஜனாதிபதி மன்னிப்பு" கொடுத்துக்கொள்வார் என்று இதில் சம்பந்தப்பட்டவர்கள் கூறுகிறார்கள்.

The Bombay High Court on Tuesday directed the investigating officer in the murder case of Congress worker V G Patil to remain present in court on July 30.

Presidential candidate Pratibha Patil has allegedly influenced and subverted investigation to sheild her brother in the case.

V G Patil was murdered in Jalgaon in 2005.

His wife Rajni Patil had moved the High Court seeking that the CBI ''interrogate'' UPA-Left's Presidential candidate Pratibha Patil, and her brother in connection with the case before the election on July 19 so she might get ''Presidential immunity'' after that.

The division bench of Justice R M S Khandeparkar and S R Sathe, however, adjourned the matter.

The move came after Additional Solicitor General failed to answer all the questions regarding the progress of investigation and the officer could not remain present in court as he was busy with his daughter's wedding, scheduled on July 19.

UPA presidential nominee Pratibha Patil has landed in a fresh controversy for claiming to be in communion with spirits.

As if she had not learnt any lesson from her controversial purdah remark, Pratibha committed another gaffe while speaking at a conference organised by the Brahma Kumaris sect at Mount Abu on Monday.

"I had a very happy experience here. The Baba came into the body of Hriday Mohini Dadiji. I did not know that he still talks. I thought he will say something and I will listen. But he had a chat with me and put me into difficulty. He also made me very lucky," said Pratibha Patil, according to an NDTV report.

The Baba she is taking about is the founder of the sect who died in 1969.

Pratibha says she spoke to his spirit through the medium of Hriday Mohini - the present head at Mount Abu centre.

Pratibha's superstitious remarks stunned the political circles and left the Congress and allies gasping for breath.

When grilled by the media, a visibly embarrassed CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat told mediapersons that they should go and ask the Congress about their choice of Pratibha and not us. "Our support was not conditioned that a candidate should be an atheist," he said.

Pratibha's remarks would also contrast with the scientific doctrines preached by President APJ Abdul Kalam for five years at each and every public function.

And despite the efforts of the Congress, for Pratibha Patil the road to Rashtrapati Bhawan may be getting bumpier with failed cooperative banks and murder charges against relatives popping up as stumbling blocks.

காங்கிரஸ் கட்சி, பிரதீபா பட்டீல் சொன்னது சரிதான். அவர் சொன்னதில் தவறேதுமில்லை என்று கூறியிருக்கிறது.

Rajasthan Governor and UPA Presidential candidate Pratibha Patil on Sunday left historians and Muslim social activists astounded by her remarks that the purdah (veil) system was introduced in India to protect women from Mughal aggressors.

Addressing a function marking the 467th birth anniversary of Maharana Pratap at the Nagar Parishad Auditorium in Udaipur, Ms. Patil said though Indian culture always respected women, the veil system began during the Mughal rule to "save women from Mughal invaders."

Ms. Patil said: "Today we are citizens of free India. There is need to put a stop to such practices. That alone will ensure real respect for women. When women are progressing in every field, it is our duty to discontinue such practices."

Historians said the veil system was prevalent much before the Mughal invasion. "There is evidence of construction of separate `zanana' chambers for women in the Chittaurgarh fort in the 11th century," said Varsha Joshi of the Institute of Rajasthan Studies.

Dr. Joshi said women were not allowed to take part in the coronation ceremonies of Rajput rulers, and they were mostly confined to home. "To argue that purdah started because of Mughals amounts to taking a very narrow view of history."


State president of Jamat-e-Islami Hind Mohammed Salim said the opinion that women adopted the veil because of the fear of Mughal rulers reflected the distorted view of history taken by the Sangh Parivar. "It is unfortunate that Ms. Patil found the communal forces' views convincing enough to incorporate them in her address."

"Factually incorrect"


The State secretary of the All-India Milli Council, Abdul Qayoom Akhtar, said Ms. Patil's remarks were "factually incorrect and historically untenable."

"We have been listening to such comments in the false propaganda of Sangh Parivar earlier. It is surprising that Ms. Patil has chosen to agree with the Sangh's line of thinking," he said.

However, Congress spokesperson Param Navdeep, contacted by The Hindu, defended Ms. Patil's remarks, saying they should be seen in the light of the life and times of the erstwhile Mewar ruler. "There should be no controversy about it. It is an established fact that women were the target of aggression during the Mughal rule," she said.
