Agartala blasts: 3 Bangladeshis arrested
Sushanta Talukdar
GUWAHATI: The Tripura police on Thursday night arrested four persons, including three Bangladeshis, in connection with Wednesday’s serial blasts at Agartala. They have announced a cash award of Rs.1 lakh to anyone providing clues on those involved in the blasts.
Tripura Police spokesman Nepal Das told The Hindu that all the four arrested were produced before the court on Friday and it remanded them to police custody for seven days.
The illegal Bangladeshi nationals have been identified as Md. Joinal (28) from Chittagong, Roshan Jamam from Sylhet and Abdul Malek (22) from Rangpur of Bangladesh. The fourth person arrested has been identified as Nurul Amin (43) from Gajaria, who was earlier detained along with five others for questioning.
The Bangladeshis were arrested from Lankamura area of Agartala. Tripura shares an 856-km-long border with Bangladesh.
Investigating agencies recovered one mobile handset, a nine-volt battery and a residue of tiffin boxes from blast sites, which indicated use of a stronger terror module in triggering the serial blasts.
However, due to the low quantity of explosives, the intensity of the blasts was comparatively less, sources said. Police earlier said ammonium nitrate and fuel oil was suspected to have been used in making the bombs.
The Tripura government has decided to erect metal detectors in all pandals of Durga puja as part of stepped-up security measures for smooth celebration of the festival beginning on Sunday.

CID arrests Imam for serial blasts
- Terror over unclaimed bags links Shillong and Tripura capital as Puja frenzy begins
SEKHAR DATTA
Agartala, Oct. 6: The CID team, searching for leads in the bomb blast case, apprehended Bilal Ahmed, the imam of Nagicherra mosque last night. Ahmed, 26, has been remanded in 10 days’ police custody by the court of the judicial magistrate.
The Tripura State Jamiat Ulema Hind protested the imam’s arrest with its president mufti Taibur Rahaman describing the arrest as “unnecessary victimisation”.
The officer-in-charge of East Agartala police station, Sanjay Biswas, said Ahmed had been booked under Sections 326, 307, 427 IPC and also under Explosives Act. Police had arrested the imam on the basis of “definite information”, he said.
Tarun Debbarma, 25, and Lalit Koloi, 26, two tribals, were arrested today by the officer-in-charge of West Agartala police station, Subrata Chakraborty, on grounds of “suspected involvement” in the serial blast case from Radhanagar today.
Commenting on Ahmed, the mufti said he originally is from Sharjul Kurthi village in Karimganj district of Assam and had been working as the imam of the Nagicherra mosque for the past year.
“He is innocent because we appointed him as the imam only after being convinced of his credentials. The police have dragged him into the case, giving a bad name to the community and the faith.”
The mufti, however, condemned the serial blasts in Agartala and described them as “heinous anti-national acts”.
Standing on the premises of Gedu Mia Town Jame Masjid, the organisation’s vice-president, Abdul Bari Chowdhury, told the media that several policemen had barged into his residence and desecrated the sanctity of a private mosque attached to it in northeastern Agartala to make queries. A delegation of the organisation will meet chief minister Manik Sarkar and submit a deputation.
The SIM of the mobile set fitted across the explosives yesterday is 9856834686. Ithad been issued in favour of a tribal youth, Bijay Debbarma, of Mekhlibundh area of Sadar (north), till recently a happy hunting ground of banned All Tripura Tiger Force militants.
A CID source said: “The identification of the SIM card holder has strengthened our suspicion that the Tiger Force militants had a significant role to play in the blasts.”
Senior police officials and bomb experts from Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Jaipur and UP will examine the nature of the bombs used in Agartala blasts.

Joint operation nets Tripura rebel leader
OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT
Agartala, July 14: A combined team of police and the Tripura State Rifles jawans apprehended an area commander of the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) at Ampi in Amarpur subdivision of South Tripura district last night.
Police sources said Balkhan Malsum, 24, was traced to Jalayapara, a remote village under Ampi police station.
“We conducted the operation after being tipped off about his presence. We trekked 15 miles southeast of Ampi. Balkhan was involved in the abduction of Alani Kumar Malsum, a tribal youth. We seized a rifle,” Amarpur subdivisional police officer Rakesh Baidya said, adding that Balkhan’s accomplices had escaped.
The militants are targeting poor tribals for extortion and abduction for ransom after most non-tribals left the interior areas of the state in the wake of ethnic cleansing and spurt in insurgency.
Describing Balkhan’s arrest as a major success, Baidya said the militants had abducted Alani Kumar, 21, at gunpoint from Tantiabari village under Ampi on June 15 this year.
Following a wave of protests and a joint search operation by the police and the TSR, the militants were forced to release Alani Kumar within a week.
“Balkhan’s arrest will encourage the tribals to resist the depredations of the NLFT,” Baidya said.
Special search operations will continue to flush out militants and their collaborators from the hilly areas, he added.

Rebel truce
Agartala, Sept. 12 (PTI): In the face of sustained police action against them, two rival insurgent groups in Tripura — National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) and All Tripura Tiger Force — have reached an understanding of not attacking each other.
State police chief K.T.D. Singh said today that it was not yet clear if the NLFT and Tiger Force would engage in joint subversive activity though they had decided to stay away from fighting each other.
Singh said police would intensify their operations against the two rebel groups, especially as polls to the state Assembly are drawing near.
-----------
National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT)
Objectives
The National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) was formed in December 1989 for the purpose of seceding from India in order to create an "independent" Christian fundamentalist state of Tripura.
History & Foundation
Most wanted terrorist mastermind of the NLFT, Kamini Debbarma
The Baptist Church of Tripura was initially set up by Missionaries from New Zealand in the 1940’s. Despite their efforts, even until 1980, only a few thousand people in Tripura had converted to Christianity. Realizing this, the Church used one of its most efficient and time-tested weapons of evangelization - creating racial and ethnic divide among the people. In the aftermath of one of the worst ethnic riots, engineered by the Church, the NLFT was born in 1989 -- but not without the midwife role of the Baptist Church. From its very inception, the NLFT has been advancing the cause of Christianity through armed compulsion. Every trace of indigenous culture and religion is being eliminated through violent means. Every resisting group is made to bleed its way to extinction.
Funding and Church Support
The National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) is heavily funded by many Baptist Churches. Just a year before the Baptist Church assisted the foundation of the NLFT, they called for Christians to target the “millions of Hindus and Jews lost in the darkness” of their respective faiths. The NLFT is basically a violent muscle arm of the church and its missionaries.
Since the foundation of the NLFT, the Baptist Church has been supporting this violent campaign by providing funding and arms for the group. In April of 2000, Nagmanlal Halam, secretary of the Noapara Baptist Church in Tripura, caught providing 50 gelatine sticks, 5kg of potassium and 2kg of sulphur and other ingredients for making explosives to the group. Afterwards, Halam confessed to buying and supplying explosives to the NLFT for the past two years. In another incident in August of 2003, police arrested the Secretary of a Baptist Christian Missionary church in North Tripura District who was in possession of five kg of potassium, one kg sulphur, few gelatin sticks and 45 gm of high explosive materials.
In Tripura, such arrest and seizures of arms and explosives from the members of the Baptist church is a common occurrence and the link between the National Liberation Front of Tripura and the Baptist Church has been well established.
Atrocities and Attacks
Arms and ammunition of the NLFT recovered apprehended by the Central Police Reserve Force (CPRF)
There are too many violent acts of the NLFT to list but most involve kidnappings, extortion, mass murders, rapes, bombings and forced gunpoint conversions. NLFT seeks to severe all ties to the indigenous culture and religion of the state. Their militants have been known to shut down Hindu and Buddhist orphanages, hospitals, temples and schools as well as a establishing a ban on Hindi movies. In essence, they are the Christian equivalent of the Taliban. One attack of the many attacks that the population of Tripura has suffered under since 1989 is described below:
On December 4th, 2000, Christians converts under the direction of Missionaries, desecrated an ashram (Hindu religious retreat) set up by murdered Hindu leader Shanti Kumar Tripura. . They desecrated Hindu idols and destroyed photos of the slain religious leader revered by both Hindu tribals and Bengalis. The Christian converts also raped two female devotees and brutally attacked two men who had come to the ashram for puja (religious rituals). The next day, Christian converts brutally desecrated another ashram at Jirania Khola and forced the inmates to stop all Hindu rituals and practices at gunpoint. A group of seven armed converted Christian terrorists barged into the ashram and threatened the 150 Hindus with dire consequences if they continued to perform Hindu rites at the ashram. The terrorists fled only after a large group of locals rushed to the ashram.Due to threats by violent Missionaries and their Christian converts, altogether 11 ashrams, schools and orphanages set up by the murdered Hindu leader in various parts of the state have been forcibly closed down by the Christian fundamentalist terrorist organization known as “National Liberation Front of Tripura” (NLFT).
Additional Links and Ties
In addition to receiving heavy monetary and moral support from the Baptist Church, the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) has links with many Islamic jihadi groups. It receives training, advice and logistical support from many of these groups.
Furthermore, the majority of the NFLT terrorist training camps are located in Bangladesh which is outside of the jurisdictional reach of Indian security forces. The Islamic Bangladesh government has continually refused to crackdown on this and other militant groups.
Also, NLFT has links with the Inter Services Intelligence Agency (ISI), Pakistan’s external intelligence agency and its counterpart in Bangladesh, the Directorate General of Field Intelligence (DGFI). During 1997-98, NLFT leaders are reported to have visited Pakistan to receive training and arms from the ISI. The ISI had allegedly arranged the passport and visas for the NLFT leaders.
NLFT has also developed trans-border linkages in Myanmar and Bhutan. Besides these, according to Tripura police, the NLFT also works with other Christian, Islamic and Communist terrorist groups in the region including has also linkages with the All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF), Nagaland-based National Socialist Council of Nagaland- Isak-Muivah (NSCN-IM), the Manipur-based Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL) and the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB), which is active in the Indian state of Assam.

Nine NLFT militants surrender in Tripura
From our ANI Correspondent
Jirania (West Tripura), June 15: Nine ultras of National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) Biswamohan faction laid down arms before Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Tripura sector, P P Singh in the 23 battalion headquarters at Jirania near Agartala on Friday.Militants said after surrendering that they decamped their base camp at Chittagong Hill Track in Bangladesh due to the fear of the lately launched anti-militants operation by security forces.
They were identified as Hemanto Debbarma (21), a self styled Lance Corporal, Sukha Ranjan Debbarma (23), Pradesh Debbarma (20), Ramdayal Tripura (19), Pradeep Debbarma (23), Nandalal Debbarma (24) Anildayal Debbarma (18), Nantoo Tripura (24) and Bijoy Jamatia (45).
Speaking to ANI, militants revealed that they had joined militant outfits for liberation of Tripura, but now they were fed up with the jungle life due to acute shortage of funds, basic amenities and huge disparity in the lifestyle of the leaders and the cadres.
They said that they had their arms training in CHT of Bangladesh few years back, but at present, movement there has become very tough. They added that most of them were forced to join the false arms struggle for an independent Tripura for the tribal, never to realize.
They hinted that many more cadres are waiting for the right time and scope to surrender.
DIG Singh said that the surrender was a joint effort of the CRPF and the 15 battalion of Assam Rifles (AR). He urged other underground militants to come out and join the national mainstream, and assured them that government shall ensure rehabilitation package.
The militants surrendered one pistol, two US made Sword Muzzle shotguns, three hand grenades, two electronic detonators and a huge quantity of ammunition.
They were listed and were wanted for their involvement in several kidnappings, extortions and attacks on security forces in Dhalai, and North Tripura district.
