Traffic went haywire here following a four-hour shutdown called by the Pashimbanga Milli Ittehad Parishad, a joint forum of 12 Islamic organisations on Friday in protest against the "recapture" of Nandigram by the CPI(M).
Police said major areas like Esplanade, Park Circus, AJC Bose Road and Kidderpore were seriously affected and the impact could also be felt in the central business district.
Train services in the south section of Sealdah were affected, though the main section remained unaffected.
"Train movement in the Diamond Harbour and Lakshmikantapur section was affected," railway officials said.
Addressing a rally, joint convenor of the forum Siddiqullah Chowdhury called on the people to fight "CPI(M) terror" in the State.
The forum comprised, among others, Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind, All India Minority Forum, Milli Council, Indian National League and Jamiat-e-Islami Hind.

பூமி உச்சத் பிரதிரோத் கமிட்டி என்ற அமைப்பினரும் சிபிஎம் தொண்டர்களும் துப்பாக்கிச்சூட்டில் இறங்கியதில் ஆறுபேர் பலியானார்கள். 20 பேர் படுகாயமடைந்துள்ளனர்.
கண்ணிவெடிகளும் நந்திக்கிராமத்தில் வெடித்துள்ளன. இதற்கு நக்ஸலைட்டுகளே காரணம் என்று சிபிஎம் கூறியுள்ளது.

At least six persons were killed and 20 others injured today in what can be termed as a gun battle between Bhumi Ucched Pratirodh Committee and CPI (M) supporters at Nandigram today. The injured included three policemen and a state armed battalion jawan.
There were also landmine explosions near the Bhangabera bridge and other places, where the two groups were involved in clashes that started after midnight and lasted for over eight hours.
At least 300 rounds of bullets were fired during the clashes state home secretary Prasad Ranjan Roy said while briefing the mediapersons at Writers’ Buildings today.
He said the government had reports of three persons dying and 14 getting injured, which included policemen. He said all the injured had sustained gunshot wounds and were admitted in different hospitals with nine of them being in critical condition.
The CPI (M) blamed the Naxalites and other anti-social elements for today’s incident.
Mamata Banerjee had invited all the parties at the TMC Bhawan tonight for finalise the future course of their agitation against what she called CPI (M) vandalism and the Chief Minister’s misuse of power. But the party could not reach any decisions.
The home secretary mentioned that the trouble started when some 5,000 persons led by the CPI (M) marched towards Sonachura from the Khejuri side last night for re-capturing their lost land in Nandigram. The marchers were carrying red flags, bombs and other weapons. They were blowing conches and beating drums as they marched through the Bhangabera bridge.
They were intercepted by equally well-armed Krishi Bachaoo Committee workers and their supporters and clashes soon followed. The home secretary admitted there was no police force in the vicinity when the clashes occurred.
Roy said the CPI (M) supporters were able to recapture several areas at Nandigram, Dakabuka, Satangabari and Tekhali from where a large number of their workers and supporters were forcibly evicted by the Krishi Bachaoo Committee soon after the violence at Nandigram on March 14.
According to reports reaching the state government in the evening, a large contingent of state armed police, which had reached Nandigram from Kharagpur at around 6 pm had taken control of the area. The home secretary said paramilitary forces had taken positions at Tekhali bridge and there was no further intrusion from the Khejuri side into Nandigram. There was an exodus from Satengabari and Ranichak after the clashes.
