மடிகேரி: மதமாற்றத்திற்காக சிறார்களை கூட்டிச் சென்றதாக நான்கு பேரை கர்நாடக போலீஸார் கைது செய்து, அவர்கள் அழைத்துச் செல்லப்பட்ட ஜீப்பையும் பறிமுதல் செய்தனர்.

கர்நாடக மாநிலம் மடிகேரி மாவட்டம் எச்.டி. கோட்டை அருகே சித்தாபூரில் இந்த கைது மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்டுள்ளது.

கிறிஸ்தவர்கள் சிலர் மதமாற்றத்திற்காக குழந்தைகளை ஜீப்பில் அழைத்துச் செல்வதாக இந்து அமைப்பு ஒன்று போலீஸாருக்குத் தகவல் கொடுத்தது.

இதையடுத்து போலீஸார் அங்கு விரைந்து சென்று சம்பந்தப்பட்ட வாகனத்தை தடுத்து நிறுத்தினர். அந்தவாகனம் ஆனந்தப்பூரிலிருந்து வந்தது. ஏராளமான 56 சிறார்கள் இருந்தனர்.

அனைவரையும் எச்.டி. கோட்டை பகுதியில் உள்ள கிறிஸ்தவ ஹாஸ்டலில் சேர்க்க அழைத்துச் செல்வதாக வேனில் இருந்த கேரளாவைச் சேர்ந்த பிஜூ, இடுக்கியைச் சேர்ந்த ரோஹி தாமஸ், எச்.டி. கோட்டையைச் சேர்ந்த மீனாட்சி, குமார் ஆகியோர் தெரிவித்தனர்.

இதுபோல கடந்த இரண்டு வாரங்களில் 16 சிறார்களை அழைத்துச் சென்றதாகவும் அவர்கள் தெரிவித்தனர். இதையடுத்து நான்கு பேரையும் போலீஸார் கைது செய்தனர்.

கைது செய்யப்பட்டவர்களிடமிருந்து துண்டுப் பிரசுரங்கள், சிடிக்கள், புத்தகங்கள் உள்ளிட்டவற்றை போலீஸார் பறிமுதல் செய்தனர். ஜீப்பும் பறிமுதல் செய்யப்பட்டது.

தங்களுக்கு அந்தமானைச் ேசர்ந்த வர்கீஸ் என்பவர் நிதியுதவி செய்வதாகவும் நான்கு பேரும் போலீஸில் தெரிவித்துள்ளனர். எஸ்டேட் தொழிலாளர்களையும், அவர்களது குழந்தைகளையும் கிறிஸ்தவ மதத்திற்கு மாற்றுவதாகவும் அவர்கள் ஒப்புக் கொண்டனர்.

கர்நாடகாவில், கிறிஸ்தவ தேவாலயங்கள் தாக்கப்பட்டு வரும் நிலையில், மதமாற்றம் செய்வதற்காக சிறார்களை அழைத்துச் சென்றதாக நான்கு பேர் கைது செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளது பரபரப்பை ஏற்படுத்தியுள்ளது.

Conversion row: Catholics also denounce New Life Church

Bangalore, Sept 18: In a fresh twist to the ongoing conversion row in Karnataka, the Catholics have now joined hands with the Hindu fundamentalists in holding the New Life Church responsible for triggering communal violence in the state.

Despite unmanageable differences over various issues, Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa and Mangalore Bishop Dr Aloysius Paul D'souza have launched a verbal attack on the evangelical church for disrupting the secular fabric in the state.

The New Life Church, which is a fringe protestant church and a part of several new-age revival groups, has been claiming that they are not involved in forced conversions and denies allegations of land grabbing.

In its defence, the organization has claimed that it works amongst the poor.

The Church has accused the Hindu fundamentalists for deliberately targeting local Catholics over conversion issue.

However, the clarifications tendered by the New Life Church’s head pastor has failed to convince the Hindu groups like the Bajrang Dal and the Sri Rama Sena to stop their agitation against the organization.

The Hindu organizations operating in the state are so peeved with the issue that they are in no mood to provide any concessions what so ever to the Catholics and the fringe Christian groups.

The continued communal violence is surely giving a tough time to the government of Chief Minister Yeddyurappa, who has allowed the police to take stern action against the Hindu groups.

Reacting to the issue, Yeddyurappa said, “I came to know that the New Life Church is converting people. I requested Catholic Bishop to help us but he's helpless like us.”

The communal disturbances in Karnataka started after the New Life Church published a controversial book denying the existence of Hindu Gods and targeting the majority community, which triggered attacks on churches and prayer halls.

Meanwhile, the organization has also come under fire over reports that it is getting foreign funds.

Man attempts rape at 68

Madikeri, Karnataka, Aug 29 : Police arrested a sixty-eight-year- old man on charges of attempting rape on a minor at Napoklu.

According to police, Hassainar alias Achhavu tried to molest a minor girl on Wednesday evening. He was arrested after the girl's father lodged a complaint.

In another incident yesterday, police arrested the brother and son of the accused who tried to attack the girl's father in the hospital.

Murugan had come to the Madikeri Hospital along with his daughter in the presence of police for a check-up.

Hassainar's son Rafiq and brother Basheer came there in a vehicle and forced Murugan to take back the complaint by giving him Rs 30,000.

As he refused, he was beaten up in front of the police. Hearing the news, volunteers of Hindu organisations arrived at the spot and thrashed the duo before handing them over to the uniformed personnel.

BANGALORE: The police detained for interrogation an Assistant Executive Engineer of the Irrigation Department in Koppal district on Monday on suspicion of having contacts with three suspected terrorists arrested by Davangere and Hubli police recently.

Sources in the State Police told The Hindu that on the information given by Mohammed Asif, a final year MBBS student of Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) Hubli, who was arrested recently, a police team from Hubli detained the engineer in Munirabad in Koppal district.

The man, working in the Tungabhadra project, is suspected to have financed Asif and two other terror suspects Riyazuddin Nasir and Asadulla Abubaker, who were arrested by Davangere police. Asadulla is a resident of Hospet taluk in Bellary district, which is a few kilometres away from Munirabad.

Firearms


The investigators have learnt that a consignment of firearms originating from Pakistan and reaching Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh was supplied to the arrested youths. The weapons, which were said to be in Asif’s possession, were shifted to an as yet undisclosed destination after the medico learnt that Nasir and Asadulla had been arrested in Honnali in Davangere district. The police are now on the search for these weapons, which they suspect include AK-47 rifles.

The police suspect that Asif had handed over the arms consignment to Aznan of Bijapur, a former regional convenor of the banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI). The police are now on the lookout for Aznan.

The sources said that soon after they were apprehended by the police, Asadulla is said to have called Asif on his mobile phone and informed him that he had been caught. The police are also on the lookout for two accomplices of Asif, one of whom has been identified as Jehangir.

The police are also probing the Afghanistan links of the arrested youths and their connections with terror modules in Kerala.

Terror plans


Riyazuddin Nasir had reportedly planned to trigger explosions at the Andhra Pradesh State police headquarters in Hyderabad.

During the interrogation by the Karnataka police, Nasir (22) has reportedly claimed that his handlers in Pakistan had assigned him the plan to execute. His claims have still to be confirmed and investigations are on by the Karnataka and Hyderabad police to do this. The police are also investigating Nasir’s other claims: that he had planned to attack American software companies in Bangalore. He mentioned Microsoft and IBM as among his targets, highly placed sources in the State police told The Hindu on Monday.

Nasir, a native of Hyderabad, told the investigators that he could not carry out the attack on the DGP’s office in Hyderabad as he did not receive the arms and ammunition from the terrorist outfit on time after sneaking into India through Bangladesh and Nepal last August, after undergoing arms training in Pakistan.

According to the sources, Nasir has claimed that his plan to attack the DGP’s office could not take off as his mentor and Harkat-ul-Jihadi (HuJi) commander Abdul Shahid, a fellow Hyderabadi, was shot dead in Pakistan. As he could not complete his assignment, his handlers had asked him to return to Pakistan, he said during the interrogation. However, he decided to stay back in India and shift base to Karnataka as the Hyderabad police were on the lookout for him.

After the twin explosions at Lumbini Park and Gokul Chats in Hyderabad, Indian authorities had urged Pakistan to hand over Shahid to India as he was suspected to have plotted a series of blasts in Andhra Pradesh. Shahid was later shot dead by unidentified men while he was riding a motorcycle in a Pakistani town, the sources said.

Meanwhile, participating in a national seminar on “Terrorism Disasters” here on Monday, P.K.H. Tharakan, Adviser to the Karnataka Governor and former chief of the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), said a “major incident” had been averted with Nasir’s arrest, although he did not specify the incident.

The sources said the investigation of Nasir and his two arrested accomplices strongly suggests a network spread across several cities in Karnataka, including Bangalore.

Nasir and Asadullah Abubakar, a first year Ayurveda medicine student of a college in Hubli, were arrested last month while they were riding a motorcycle in a Davangere village. Subsequently, the police arrested their accomplice Mohammed Asif, a final year MBBS student of Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences in Hubli.

On information given by Asif, the police confirmed that Nasir had organised an arms training camp in a forest area near Hubli. It also emerged that Asif was connected with the banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) and he was propagating the cause of “jihad,” the sources said.

Naxals set bus ablaze near Bangalore

Bangalore, July 1: Armed Naxals on Sunday set a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation bus on fire near Shimoga, about 270 kms southwest of Bangalore.

After asking people on board the bus to get off, the naxals set the bus afire.

The bus was on Agumbe-Shringeri route heading towards Bangalore.

The incident happened about 110 km from Shimoga in the early hours today, police said.

The rebels ran away after setting the bus on fire. The Anti-Naxalite Force (ANF) and police that rushed to the spot arranged alternative transport for the stranded passengers.
