Srinagar, October 7 The J&K police and Army on Tuesday claimed to have killed two militants of Lashkar-e-Toiba, hailing from Kerala, in separate encounters in Kupwara district in north Kashmir.
They were killed after the police received a specific input about the movement of a militant group in the area. They were planning to sneak across the Line of Control. “The documents we recovered from one of the slain militants after a fierce 36-hour gun battle at Marg Darpora village indicate that they hail from Kerala,” said Inspector General of Police, Kashmir range, Balaji Srinivas. “The duo were associated with the LeT and we are in touch with Kerala police to ascertain their real identity.”

Police sources say an identity card recovered identified one of the militants as Shakeel Mohammad of 383 Chowk Kovalam, Kerala. Police also recovered some literature in Malayalam from his possession. One AK rifle with two magazines, 52 rounds of ammunition and a pouch was also recovered from the encounter site.

Another militant was also killed in the nearby forest area but they are yet to establish his identity even as the police have information that he too was part of a group of five militants from Kerala who had come to the border district to cross over to PoK. Police have launched a massive search to trace the three militants who are at large.

Terrorist tag stuns separatists
Ishfaq-ul-Hassan
Tuesday, October 07, 2008 01:52 IST

SRINAGAR: Shock, anger and disbelief sum up the mood in the separatist camp after Pakistani president Asif Ali Zardari described militants fighting in Jammu and Kashmir as “terrorists”. The statement has put Kashmiri separatists again on notice with people beginning to raise questions about the rationale of relying on Islamabad for support.

“Our youths picked up arms only when New Delhi failed to address the Kashmir issue peacefully. Our struggle is for the right to self determination and that will continue peacefully. We have nothing to do with Zardari who should realise that our struggle is for our birthright,” said Moulana Mohommad Abbaas Ansari, former chairman of the moderate Hurriyat Conference.

Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front, which pioneered the armed struggle in Kashmir, termed the statement as foolish. “No power on earth can defeat Kashmiris who have given huge sacrifices for achieving the goal of freedom,” said Bashir Ahmad Bhat, vice-chairman of the JKLF.

Mohommad Azam Inqlabi, former chief commander of the Operation Balakote outfit, who now heads Mahaz-e-Azadi, described Zardari’s statement a “blatant betrayal”. “History will sideline Zardari akin to his predecessor Pervez Musharraf for his irresponsibility. He is trying to appease George Bush by these irresponsible statements because he is facing enormous crises, both economic and political,” said Inqlabi.

But Kashmiri Pandits, who bore the brunt of militancy which forced them to migrate from the valley, were happy. “We have been victims of terrorism and this statement has vindicated our stand,” said Ashwani Chrungoo, president of Panun Kashmir Movement, the apex body of migrant Kashmiri Pandits.

Reactions from mainstream political parties were mixed. “We should congratulate prime minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi for projecting the Kashmir issue in the right perspective,” said Abdul Gani Vakil, vice-president of J&K Pradesh Congress Committee. PDP said gun and grenades have no role in the peaceful struggle launched by the people. The National Conference said: “Let us first see what he has actually said.”

Hindu Temple Reopens in Srinagar, After 19 Years
By Fayaz Wani

Srinagar, March 8: Soomyar Mandir, a Hindu temple at Haba-Kadal in the summer capital Srinagar was thrown open after 19 years.

Before the onset of militancy in 1989, the Haba-Kadal had the maximum concentration of Kashmiri Hindus. After the turmoil, most of the Kashmiri Hindu families migrated to different parts of India and Indian troops set up a camp at the temple, which is still present there.

The temple on the banks of river Jehlum was re-opened, the other day on the occasion of Hindu festival.

About a hundred Kashmiri Hindus attended the re-opening function of the temple amidst reciting of religious hymns. A large number of Kashmiri Muslims also attended the function and interacted with the Hindus, who once lived in the area.

Some of the Kashmiri Hindu families, who have stayed back in the area, said that they did not face any kind of insecurity. "In fact, we considered ourselves always secure in the company of our Muslim neighbours," said Kamlesh Parimoo, a Kashmiri Hindu resident of the area.

"As a young boy I used to sell flowers on the occasion of Hindu festivals near this temple. My joy knew no bounds when I learned that this temple will be opened. I hope other temples are also restored," he said.

The Hindu idols lying outside the temple have remained untouched. "They have not been touched by anybody," said Kanya Lal Wazir, president of Hindu Welfare Forum.

He, alleged however, that gold and silver ornaments of some temples lying in possession of some Hindu priests have gone missing. He further alleged that Hindu priests from outside Kashmir have targeted the ornaments and their property within Srinagar city.

Yoga gaining popularity among young Kashmiri girls
November 14th, 2007 by admin

This ancient form of exercise is fast becoming popular among young Kashmiri girls. This was quite evident when over 180 girls from several schools across the state participated in the first-ever two-day State Women Yoga Championship organised here on Saturday.

Participants, mostly between the age group of 10 and 15 years, competed by displaying their flexibility through performing yoga postures and exercises.

“There is many advantages of Yoga, whatever one wants to become (by practicing it) one can achieve it,” said Fozia, a participant.

Miara Anjum, another participant, said, “Now, it has become a sport and is no longer just something practiced by seers and holy men for meditation. It gives us a peace of mind.”

The winners in the two-day long championship organised by the Jammu and Kashmir Yoga Association will participate at the national level.

“If one follows therapeutic Yoga it can cure many diseases. It has a lot of benefits and if a child practices Yoga it can help in their studies,” said Shabir Ahmed, coach cum organiser.

Yoga, the 5,000-year-old Indian discipline of exercise, diet and meditation involves a perfect blend of mental and physical exercises. (ANI)

Nine Hindu pilgrims among 11 hurt in Kashmir blast
Sat Jul 21, 2007 6:03am EDT

powered by SphereSRINAGAR, India, July 21 (Reuters) - Eleven people including nine Hindu pilgrims were wounded on Saturday when suspected separatist militants lobbed a grenade at a pilgrims' community kitchen in Indian Kashmir, police said.

No militant group has claimed responsibility for the attack, the second in the past five days during an annual pilgrimage.

Annually tens of thousands of Hindus trek through treacherous mountain passes to the Amarnath shrine, where devotees worship a phallus-shaped ice stalagmite seen as a symbol of Lord Shiva, the Hindu god of destruction.

"The blast triggered panic in Pahalgam, many pilgrims were screaming and running," a police official said. Pahalgam is one of the two base camps located near Srinagar, Kashmir's summer capital for the pilgrimage.

The two-month long pilgrimage has been targeted several times since a revolt against Indian rule broke out in 1989.

On Tuesday 16 people, including Hindu pilgrims, were wounded when suspected militants threw a grenade near a crowded pilgrimage camp at Baltal, another pilgrimage base camp east of Srinagar.

A local shopkeeper later died in hospital.

Authorities have deployed thousands of soldiers and policemen along the pilgrims' route, which crosses icy streams, goes around glacier-fed lakes and through snow-covered mountain passes.

There has been an increase in violence in the strife-torn region in summer, when it becomes easier for militants to move about and to cross through the mountain passes from Pakistan.

Officials say more than 42,000 people have been killed in Kashmir in over 17 years of violence involving Muslim militants and Indian troops. Human rights groups put the toll at about 60,000.

Two rebels killed in Kashmir mosque gun battle
Sun Sep 30, 2007 2:24 PM IST

SRINAGAR, India (Reuters) - A gun battle between security forces and two separatist guerrillas holed up overnight in a village mosque in Indian Kashmir ended on Sunday when soldiers shot them both dead, police said.

Troops laid siege to the mosque in the Tujan area of western Kashmir on Saturday evening after militants took shelter there.

"The intermittent exchange of fire continued throughout the night," a police official said.

The violence comes as Muslim-majority Kashmir observes the fasting month of Ramadan.

Separatist militants fighting New Delhi's rule in Kashmir have in the past sought refuge in mosques and other shrines.

Most of the sieges have ended in bloodshed.

More than 42,000 people have been killed since an anti-India revolt began in the Himalayan region in 1989, officials say. Human rights groups put the toll at about 60,000 dead or missing.

Violence has declined in Kashmir since India and Pakistan, who fought two of their three wars over the region, began a peace process in 2004.

Kashmiri Hindus Hold First Religious Procession in Srinagar in 18 Years
By Fayaz Wani

Srinagar, Sept 3: For the first time in the 18 years of militant violence in Kashmir, Kashmiri Hindus held a religious procession in Srinagar. The procession took place a day before they celebrate the birthday of Hindu god, Lord Krishna.

At least 350 Kashmiri Hindus held the religious procession from a temple at Ganpatyar, 4 kilometers from the summer capital of Srinagar. Raising religious hymns and slogans, the Hindu processionists marched through the roads and moved towards the temple at Lal Chowk, hub of business activity in Srinagar.

The processionists were accompanied by local Muslims. To prevent any attack on the Hindus, a large number of Indian police and Indian para-military personnel were also following the procession. No untoward incident happened and the religious procession of Hindus culminated peacefully at a temple at Lal Chowk, where they offered special prayers. "We prayed for return of peace to Kashmir", said a Kashmiri Hindu, Sham Lal.

He said that the 350 Kashmiri Hindus had come from Jammu and other parts of India to perform the special prayers in temples in Kashmir to mark the birthday of Lord Krishna.

"Before the eruption of militancy in Kashmir, we had been regularly following this ritual but after the rebellion broke out in Kashmir in 1989, we migrated from Kashmir to safer places in India and gave up this ritual. Now that situation in Kashmir is improved, all of us decided to return to Kashmir and offer special prayers", he added.

It is in place to mention here that after the eruption of rebellion in Kashmir, half a million Kashmiri Hindus migrated from Kashmir to other parts of India. The Hindus alleged that they were pushed out of Kashmir by the militant groups. But the militant groups and Kashmiri Muslims have been continuously denying it, saying that Kashmiri Hindus were asked to migrate enmasse from Kashmir by the then Governor of Jammu and Kashmir at the behest of Indian government.

Winds of change: J&K girls take up arms
Vikram Choudhary
Monday, August 13, 2007 (Naushera)

Fighting militancy in Jammu and Kashmir is no longer limited to just men. Women and girls are now picking up the gun to protect themselves and their homes.

They play hockey in Chake de India but in real life, young girls in remote border villages in Jammu and Kashmir are doing their bit for their country.

18-year-old Sona helps her mother with the household chores but soon she will also be protecting her neighbours from militants.

''I and my mother both have undergone this training. Now even if militants come when my father is not at home, we can protect ourselves and our house,'' said Sona Devi, VDC member, Sarya village.

27 women from this border village of Naushera have been trained to use AK-47s and other heavy-duty weapons. They will now be part of the village defence committees.

''For self defence and for the defence of the country, women should also come forward. Women should come out of their homes.

''I want to tell them that they should also learn how to use guns,'' said Sunita, VDC member, Sarya village.

The Indian Army has been training these women. Senior officers believe they are as capable of fighting militants as the men.

''In case of a threat, they can fight it. They will also help us, so that we can also take action.

''There are reports that women terrorists are being trained. These women can help us a lot in checking that,'' said Major Gen Rajinder Singh, GOC, DAH mountain division, Naushera.

So far about ninety women have been trained after they volunteered to be on the village defence committees.

A sign of the changing times even when it comes to fighting militancy.

Police Commando Among Three Killed in Kashmir Violence
By Fayaz Wani

An Indian police command and two civilians were killed in separate militancy related incidents in the trouble hit-Kashmir.

An Indian police commando belonging to Special Striking Reserves (SSR) of the India police, who was critically injured in a militant attack at Rajouri in Jammu province, succumbed to injuries in hospital today.

The police commando was critically injured when a heavily armed group of militants ambushed a group of police commandos last week. Identified as Bilal Ahmad, the commando received multiple bullet injuries and was airlifted to a hospital in Jammu, where he succumbed today.

Unidentified gunmen kidnapped a retired forest guard from his house at Rajouri in Jammu province of the strife torn state during the preceding night. His body was recovered by police from the adjoining village today. Police sources said that the hostage had been beheaded and his eyes chopped off by his abductors. Indian police and para-military soldiers have launched a massive manhunt to track down the killers of the civilian.

Meanwhile, a civilian, who was injured in a grenade explosion in North Kashmir on August 13, succumbed to injuries in summer capital Srinagar's biggest hospital today. With his death, the death toll of civilians killed in the grenade blast rose to four. The grenade attack and the killing of civilians in the blast evoked strong resentment from the local population, who took to the roads and staged a protest demonstration. They were protesting against the grenade attack in crowded place.

A few days before the incident, all the militant groups operating in Kashmir had pledged not to carry out strikes against Indian soldiers in crowded places.

Hundreds of non-Kashmiris Leave Valley Today
By Fayaz Wani

Srinagar, July 28: After militant group, Hizbul Mujahidee's statement asking non-Kashmiris to leave the Valley, hundreds of non-Kashmiri labourers and artisan left the summer capital Srinagar today for their respective places in India. Police sources said that 7000 non-Kashmiri labourers and artisans left today.

A large number of non-Kashmiri labourers and artistans carrying their baggage were seen boarding government owned vehicles at the Tourist Reception Centre (TRC), Srinagar. They were also seen in large numbers boarding tata sumo and tata tempo vehicles at Gantha Ghar, Lal Chowk.

A sumo operator at Ganta Ghar said that all morning, hundreds of non-Kashmiri artisans and labourers boarded the sumo vehicles for Jammu. Similarly some hundred non-Kashmiris boarded the tempo traveler vehicles and left Kashmir.

An official at TRC said that by noon, at least a dozen buses left for Jammu and out of these four to five were fully filled with the non-Kashmiri labourers and artisans, commonly known in Kashmiri terminology as "Biharis".

A labourer from the Indian state of Bihar along with five others left their job in Uri, Baramulla to go back to their native place this morning in a sumo vehicle. One among them, identifying himself as Vinod Paswan of Aurangabad, Bihar said, "We are leaving the Valley for our own security". He said that more non-Kashmiris working in Uri would be leaving in the next few days. He said that nobody told them to leave Kashmir. "We are leaving on our own", he added.

Another non-Kashmiri labourer, Vijay Kumar from Gatiya, Bihar said, "I, along with 12 of my companions came to visit Kashmir a month back and we were staying at Umar Colony, Lal Bazar on the outskirts of Srinagar. The other day, the house owner where we were staying told us to leave the place. Even the youth and people on the roads were asking us to leave".

He said that after thoroughly thinking over the situation, all 13 of them decided to leave. All 13 of them boarded a bus at TRC, Srinagar for Jammu, this afternoon.

A large number of non-Kashmiris also left on buses from the summer capital's Batamaloo area.

A carpenter from the Indian state of Punjab, Gurjeet Singh, said, that he is keeping a close watch on the situation. "I have not yet decided to leave the place, but in case the exodus of non-Kashmiri labourers and artisans continues, then I too will leave for my place. Nobody wants to risk his life", he added.

Police sources in Srinagar said that 7000 non-Kashmiri labourers and artisans left the Valley today. They said that in North Kashmir almost all the non-Kashmiri labourers and artisans have packed up and may be leaving Kashmir within the next few days.

The non-state subject labourers are leaving from North Kashmir, central Kashmir and Srinagar. But there are no reports of non-Kashmiris leaving South Kashmir.

It is pertinent to mention here that hundreds of non locals, working here, as labourers, have already left the valley fearing a hostile response, after two non locals were found involved in rape incident in North Kashmir.

Be it mason, plumber, carpenter, painter, cobbler, motor mechanic, hair dresser or driver - the non Kashmiris have been a huge force of skilled labourers working in the Valley for years. A large number of these non locals were also working in the paddy fields in the Valley.

Kashmir rebels blamed for tourist attacks Wed Aug 1, 4:10 AM ET

SRINAGAR, India (AFP) - Islamic militants are to blame for two attacks targeting tourists in Indian Kashmir this week that left nine dead including four young people, police said.

Two brothers, aged 12 and 14, from India's Bihar state were killed and six others wounded in a grenade attack on Monday by suspected militants on a tourist vehicle in southern Pulwama district, a police statement said.

On Sunday, seven people including five tourists, two of them young girls, were killed and 19 wounded in a blast aboard a coach in Indian Kashmir's main city of Srinagar, in another attack police blamed on militants.

"After forensic and chemical investigation of the samples collected at the blast site, the preliminary inferences suggest that the blast has been caused by a grenade," police said on Wednesday.

"Such types of grenades have been recovered from the militants of Lashkar-e-Toiba outfit recently," it said.

Lashkar-e-Toiba is the most feared militant group fighting to bring Indian Kashmir under Pakistani rule. Both New Delhi and Islamabad control part of the scenic Himalayan region.

The group however has condemned the attack and denied any involvement.

An insurgency by Islamic militants against New Delhi's rule in Indian Kashmir has claimed more than 42,000 lives since it was launched in 1989.

SRINAGAR, India, July 29 (Reuters) - Six people, including four women, were killed and at least 21 wounded on Sunday by an explosion aboard a tourist coach in Kashmir's main city, police and witnesses said.

Police were unsure if it was a grenade attack by militants or if a faulty air-conditioner had exploded inside the coach.

"A low intensity blast took place in a tourist bus, killing six persons," a police statement said, adding that the cause of the explosion blast was under investigation.

A senior police officer said an attack by militants was not ruled out.

Police said four of the dead and all the injured were Muslim holidaymakers from the western state of Gujarat.

"We were returning after a prayer at Hazratbal and there was a sudden bang," Imtiyaz Mustufa, an injured tourist, told Reuters, referring to Kashmir's holiest shrine which houses what some believe is a hair from the beard of the Prophet Mohammad.

"Then there were glass and metal pieces around me. People were crying and writhing in blood."

No militant group has claimed responsibility for the explosion near Shalimar Garden, a popular tourist spot in Srinagar, the summer capital of the troubled Himalayan region.

The explosion comes a day after India's Defence Minister A.K. Antony said the security situation was "fast improving" in Kashmir.

At least a dozen Indian tourists were killed and scores wounded in attacks on their vehicles by suspected separatist militants last year.

Officials say more than 42,000 people have been killed in Kashmir since a revolt against Indian rule erupted in 1989. But human rights groups put the toll at about 60,000.

Ancient Kulgam shrine reopens after 17 years in south Kashmir
22 Jul 2007, 1604 hrs IST,PTI

SRINAGAR: Torched by militants 15 years ago, the 400-year-old Kulwagishuri temple in Kulgam town of south Kashmir was on Sunday thrown open to devotees with thousands of Hindus and Muslims attending the ceremony amid tight security.

Over 2,000 Kashmir Pandits, who arrived here from several parts of the country and even the US and UK, took part in a 'maha yagya' and offered prayers at the temple which was closed since militancy forced Hindu residents to flee the Valley in 1999.

"It was after 17 years that ancient temple was thrown open to Kashmiri Pandits who thronged the shrine in large numbers," All Party Migrant Coordination Committee (APMCC) chairman Vinod Pandit said.

An important Vaishnovite shrine, it suffered damage in 1992 when militants set it afire. Mata Kulwagishuri Prabandik Committee (MKPC) in coordination with APMCC undertook renovation of the temple complex, MKPC President Maheshwar Nath Zutshi said.

Over 3,000 odd Muslims, including women and children, also took part in the temple reopening function and celebrated the day with their Hindu brethren.

"It has served as a platform for interaction between Muslims and Hindus," MLA Raman Mattoo said. He said such moves will help bridge the gulf between the two communities and pave the pave for restoration of peace.

Among those who took part in the function were 9 Rashtriya Rifles commander Col Rajan Mahajan, president Jammu and Kashmir migrant cell CPI (M), M L Bhat, chairman Kulgam town area committee, Ramesh Bhat, Secretary CPI (M) Aamin Dar and Councillor Gulam Rasool.
