Bomber: Kafeel Ahmed sent email saying he wanted to be a martyr

The Glasgow airport bomber who died of burns in the attack sent an email confession to relatives, a security source claims.


Kafeel Ahmed, 27, who died in early August of 90 per cent burns just over a month after the bungled terror attack, is believed to have been the driver of the Jeep Cherokee deliberately driven into the terminal.

And it has now emerged that there is damning evidence of the Indian-born engineer's dedication to terrorism.


Not only is he said to have sent an email claiming he was acting in the name of Allah and discussing martyrdom, his relatives have also identified him in CCTV footage fleeing one of the failed nightclub car bombs in London the day before the Glasgow airport attack of June 30.

In addition, analysis of his computer is said to show he visited bomb-making websites, and his mobile phone was found in the burnt-out Jeep.

The evidence is vital for anti-terror experts, who believe Ahmed, who lived in Glasgow, could have provided crucial information about Al Qaeda networks.

His death came despite a long battle to save him from his injuries, at a cost of £150,000 to the National Health Service.

A security source has told reporters that Ahmed sent a text to a relative just two hours before the Jeep was driven into Glasgow airport.

The text contained a password to access a linked email.

In the email, Ahmed is said to admit to both the London car bombing attempt and the Glasgow plot - and to say he was serving Allah.

Although the email apparently accepts that his relative will be shocked by his involvement in terror, he says that he desires martyrdom and appears to describe the Glasgow attack as a suicide bombing.

The email was not read by its recipient however until after the Jeep had been engulfed by flames at the airport.

It is believed that the Glasgow attack was launched in a hurry after the London bombings failed, because the terrorists feared they would be arrested imminently.

Medics at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary said Ahmed never emerged from a coma throughout his long unwilling battle for life after he was hauled from the flaming Jeep.

The source said: "This was one of the worst cases of burns I have ever seen. It was very traumatic for everyone involved in his care.

"I was surprised he survived this long."

The other occupant of the Jeep, Iraqui doctor Bilal Talal Samad Abdullah, has been charged with conspiring to set off lethal explosions.

Also charged over the attacks are Jordanian doctor Mohammed Jamil Asha and Ahmed's brother Sabeel, 26.

Kafeel's death devastates family

The family of Kafeel Ahmed, who died in a British hospital early on Friday morning, is in a state of shock.

Over 20 hours have passed since Kafeel died, but his family in Bangalore claim that they have not yet received any official word from the authorities in London [Images].

The lawyer for the family, B T Venkatesh, confirmed this and added that the family will not be able to comment unless there is a confirmation. He, however, adds that unless there is an official communication, there is hope for the family.

The family does not disown Kafeel while they only pray and hope it was not him, he added.

Meanwhile, it is learnt that Kafeel's mother, Dr Zakia Ahmed, told her relatives to pray that it is not her son who the UK police were talking about. Earlier in the day, she is supposed to have said that till date she doubts that it is her son that they are talking about.

The family it is learnt has not contacted any of the mosques in Bangalore to conduct the last rites for Kafeel. Family sources ask, 'where is the question of contacting the mosque, when the parents refuse to believe that it their son?'

They, however, are devastated by the turn of events, because deep within Dr Zakia has a suspicion that the Glasglow bomber is her son.

Sabeel has been held in UK for allegedly concealing information about the UK terror plot. Last week on seeing the images of Kafeel Ahmed, the mother has said that she is doubtful that the man in the picture could be her son, Kafeel Ahmed. She doubted if her son's face was that plump.

Kafeel Ahmed, an engineer from Bangalore had driven a burning jeep into the Glasgow international airport. The UK police had named him as a prime suspect. Close friends say that he was a mild person and very studious. A close look at Kafeel's activities since his college days goes on to show that he was the member of a radical Islam group.

His friends say that there was a gradual change in his attitude during his college days. He became more reserved and preached about Islam most of the time.

An aeronautical engineer with a PhD from the United Kingdom, Kafeel is alleged to be the chief designer of the car bombs used in the attack. He did his engineering from the UBTD College in Davangere, 250 km from Bangalore. His friends say that he always wanted to design planes and his ultimate dream was to work in the UK.

Dr Siddeshwara, the in-charge principle of the college said that he remembered Kafeel as a very mild boy. He however added that Kafeel had a lot of leadership qualities.

Before leaving Bangalore for the UK on May 5 2007, he is said to have told his family that he was starting work on a confidential project and hence could not be reached both on telephone or e-mail. He however had assured that nothing would happen to him and there was nothing to worry.

During the last conversation he had with his mother Dr Zakia Ahmed, he said his work would be complete in a month and then he would return to Bangalore.

Kafeel is the elder son of Dr Maqbool Ahmed and Dr Zakia Ahmed, residents of Banashankari in Bangalore.

The terror suspect being treated for severe burns following an attempted terror attack on Glasgow Airport died in hospital last night.

Kafeel Ahmed, 27, had third degree burns to 90 per cent of his body and virtually no chance of surviving, doctors said, and finally lost his fight for life last night.

He doused himself in petrol and set light to himself at the airport on June 30. He was suspected to have been the driver of the Jeep Cherokee that burst into flames as it was rammed into the airport terminal building.

Also known as Khalid Ahmed, he had been kept under armed guard at the hospital since the botched attack.

Fellow suspect in the jeep Bilal Abdullah, 27, an Iraqi doctor, was arrested and charged with conspiring to cause explosions "of a nature likely to endanger life or cause serious injury".

It was initially thought that Mr Ahmed, from Bangalore in India, was a medical doctor. However, it later emerged that he has a doctorate in aeronautical engineering and has studied at Queen's University in Belfast and Anglia Polytechnic University in Cambridge.

He is the elder brother of Dr Sabeel Ahmed, 26, from Liverpool, who has been charged with not disclosing information that could have helped police arrest a suspected terrorist.

The airport in flames after the failed bomb attack

On 6 July, Iraqi doctor Bilal Talal Samad Abdullah was charged with conspiracy to cause explosions, first in London and later in Glasgow. He had been arrested at Glasgow Airport following the suspected failed car bombing there.

Mohammed Asha, 26, who lives in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, has been charged with conspiracy to cause explosions.

Dr Asha's wife was arrested and later released without charge.

A spokesman for Strathclyde Police said: "We can confirm that the man seriously injured during the course of the incident at Glasgow Airport on Saturday June 30 has died in Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

"The man died earlier this evening and the circumstances surrounding the death have been reported to the procurator fiscal."

Commenting on Mr Ahmed's death, a spokesman for the Scottish Executive said: "There has been some comment about the treatment provided for him by the NHS.

"It was perfectly right that he should have received the appropriate treatment our health service could offer as this reflects the value our society places on human life.

"The focus now should be on the criminal investigation that is under way."

Police are hunting three Iraqi doctors who went on the run in Glasgow after terrorists tried to blow up the city's airport.


The men arrived in the UK in May to take part in a Government-backed training programme, but failed to turn up for their flights back to Baghdad earlier this month.

They disappeared just two weeks after Bilal Abdullah, an Iraqi-trained doctor who worked at a Glasgow hospital, was arrested and charged with terrorist offences over the airport attack on June 30.

He was a passenger in a Jeep driven by Kafeel Ahmed, an engineer who is being treated for extensive burns after the vehicle burst into flames as it hit the doors of the passenger terminal.

Two other junior doctors of Middle Eastern origin, who worked at the same hospital as Abdullah, the Royal Alexandra in Paisley, were arrested on July 2, but released without charge on July 15.

Last night, the Department of Health – which has been forced to defend itself against criticism of its security vetting – insisted that the three missing doctors were not being linked to any anti-terror investigations.

They were part of a group of 26 doctors flown to Britain from Baghdad by the international consultancy group Mott MacDonald, which is contracted by the Government to run a training programme to improve the management skills of Iraqi medical staff.


The stressful conditions and dangerous working environment in Iraq have led to a 'brain drain', with many top doctors fleeing the country. The training programme is part of an international effort to repair some of the damage caused by the exodus – with the doctors gaining improved clinical skills and knowledge, so that they can improve health services in Iraq when they return.



Training had initially taken place in Iraq, but when the security situation deteriorated they were forced to move it to the UK.

The group undertook their training at four hospitals in the city, the Glasgow Royal Infirmary – where Ahmed is being treated for his burns – the Western Infirmary, the Gartnavel and the Southern General, but the Department of Health said none of them visited the Royal Alexandra.

They were due to fly back in two groups on July 13 and 14, but only 23 turned up at the airport. Abdullah, 27, who had worked at the Royal Alexandra since last March, has been charged with conspiracy to cause explosions.

It is believed he entered Scotland from Pakistan – a known training ground for Al Qaeda terrorists. Patrick Mercer, Tory MP for Newark and former party spokesman on homeland security, said the episode proved vetting procedures were too lax.

'This underlines the need for an effective border security service,' he said.

'It is vital that we keep track of foreign visitors, and particularly those coming into the country from hotspots.'

A Department of Health spokeswoman said: 'We can confirm three Iraqi doctors gaining experience in the UK have failed to return.

'We are satisfied that there is no link to the recent terrorist incidents. Police are investigating, and are working closely with the immigration service.

'We are disappointed that three participants chose not to return, but glad that 23 will now be helping improve services for Iraqis.'

அதை ரிமோட் கண்ட்ரோல் மூலம் எப்படி வெடிக்க வைப்பது? வெடித்தால் அதன் பாதிப்பு எப்படியிருக்கும்?Õ என்றெல்லாம் ஆய்வு செய்துள்ளார். இதற்காக கம்ப்யூட்டரில் வரைபடம் தயாரித்து ஒத்திகை பார்த்துள்ளார்.
