Hard-line Hindus ransack Indian magazine office
Tue Aug 14, 2007 9:28AM EDT
Power. Price. Service. No Compromises.MUMBAI (Reuters) - Members of a hard-line Hindu political party ransacked the office of an Indian news magazine on Tuesday, upset that the latest edition described their leader as a villain, police said.
About a dozen members of the Shiv Sena party attacked Outlook magazine's offices in the financial centre of Mumbai, smashing windows and damaging computers, they said, adding that no one was hurt in the attack.
This week, Outlook ran a cartoon of Shiv Sena leader Bal Thackeray dressed as Adolf Hitler, of whom Thackeray has spoken approvingly in the past.
The magazine blamed Thackeray's speeches and articles for sparking deadly Hindu-Muslim riots in Mumbai in 1992 and named him as one of several villains in a special issue to mark India's 60th independence anniversary.
"Outlook has definitely tried to demean Thackeray," said Neelam Gorhe, a Shiv Sena spokesman.
Police said they were yet to make any arrests.

Sena-BJP alliance on the verge of break-up
Vilas Tokale
Mumbai, Aug 7 (PTI) The two-decade old alliance between Shiv Sena and BJP in Maharashtra is on the rocks, with the recent Presidential election bringing to fore the growing chasm in their ties.
While state BJP leaders have announced that the party would take a decision by August 15 on whether to continue the alliance with Sena, the latter has retorted by saying that it was up to BJP to clarify if the 'yuti' (alliance) was still on.
"The ball is in BJP's court. It should first declare whether the alliance is still on. Whether we are friends. Only then will Sena take a call on the Vice-Presidential poll", Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray declared.
BJP state unit chief Nitin Gadkari responded by stating that BJP would announce its stand on the fate of the alliance only after the Vice-Presidential poll.
BJP group leader in State Assembly, Eknath Khadse has ridiculed Sena's argument of having supported UPA-Left candidate Pratibha Patil because she is a Maharashtrian. "Even Najma Heptulla, the NDA nominee for vice-presidential poll, was born in Maharashtra. So, on this basis, those who backed Patil should also support her", he said.
BJP general secretary Gopinath Munde has been the most vocal opponent of Sena on the Pratibha Patil candidature issue. He termed 80-year old Sena supremo Bal Thackeray's decision to back Patil as a 'betrayal' of the alliance.
"The Sena supports Congress candidate for presidency and feels NCP chief Sharad Pawar should become the Prime Minister. Is this expected of an Opposition party?" he asked. PTI

Policemen try to shield Zaffar Akbar Bhat (wearing white cap) from an attack by activists of Shiv Sena, during Bhat’s news conference in Jammu yesterday. Bhat was taken to hospital in an unconscious condition after the attack
JAMMU: A former militant leader of Jammu and Kashmir was allegedly assaulted by activists of the Shiv Sena party here yesterday.
The police have launched a search to catch the suspected assailants, officials said.
The Shiv Sena activists stormed into the conference hall of the Jammu Press Club shouting slogans against militants and prevented Zaffar Akbar Bhat from speaking to journalists.
Bhat who was rendered unconscious was taken to hospital.
The officials said Bhat had convened the press conference to unveil his plans for helping Kashmiri Hindus to return and ways to further the peace process.
Shiv Sena activists led by their state unit president Anan Sharma, however, were not convinced of the intentions. “This man had killed so many people, now they are talking of peace,” Sharma shouted while forcing his entry.
A case has been registered in Nowabad police station here.
“We are on the look out for him (Shiv Sena state president),” said a police official. – IANS
