Aligarh Muslim University asks students to leave hostels
Aligarh, Sept 17 : The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) on Monday asked the students to vacate the hostels within 48 hours, after deciding to close the university sine-die following violence on the campus.
Protesting against the killing of a university student on the campus, scores of students Monday morning ransacked and burnt down Vice-Chancellor P K Abdul Aziz's residence.
Aziz, however, was not present in his house when it was attacked.
Rapid Action Force and PAC personnel have been deployed in the campus where the situation is tense but under control, AMU Spokesman Rahat Abrar said.
An emergency meeting of the University's Executive Council and its Dean took the decision to close the varsity sine-die.
The meeting also decided to institute a high-level team headed by a retired Supreme Court judge to investigate into all incidents of violence and vandalism in the campus during the past one year.
The AMU will also urge the Central Government to order a Central Bureau of Investigation probe into the killings on the campus since April last.
Mazhar Naeem, a BSc engineering student, who stayed in Aftab hostel, was attacked by some unidentified persons late on Sunday night.
He was declared brought dead at the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College.
The Sunday's killing was the third such incident since April this year.
