Tribals seek action against writer, publisher of translated Bible

Around 15,000 tribals from seven states held a mass meeting Sunday in the Jharkhand capital and demanded stern action against the writer and publisher of a translated Bible that reportedly calls for destruction of tribal places of worship.
Tribals from the states of Orissa, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Maharashtra attended the mahapanchyat with their traditional weapons like bows and arrows.
The Bible Society of India came out with a translated version of the Bible in Kuduk language known as "Nemha Bible". Kuduk is a tribal language.
The translated Bible reportedly calls for the destruction of tribal places of worship.
Different tribal organisations, tribal pahans (priests), tribal scholars and others attended the mahapanchyat.
The mahapanchyat passed a resolution seeking action against the writer and publisher of the translated book.
"The Christian Society has made a deliberate attempt to hurt the sentiments of tribal people," said Bahura Ekka, former vice chancellor of Vinobha Bhave University while addressing the gathering.
"The mahapanchyat has directed the Christian Society not to prepare or publish any book related to tribal culture, tradition and prayer system. Christian Society should take it as a ban imposed on them not to write or publish anything related to tribal society," says the resolution.
The resolution further says: "All forms of tribal festivals, tradition, cultural exhibitions in educational institutions and churches should be banned. Do not use any word related to tribal culture, tradition and religious faiths in your books."
The translated Bible issue had also rocked the monsoon session of the state assembly.
The Jharkhand government had announced recall of the books.
This is the second time in less than a year that a book published by the Christian Society has created controversy. Previously a book had made some adverse comments against a freedom fighter from Jharkhand.

Bhubaneswar, Oct 21 (IANS) A hunger strike by a Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader here demanding arrest of those behind the killing of Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati entered the second day Tuesday.
Senior leaders of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) including national vice president Jual Oram and state president Suresh Pujari went to the venue of the protest and extended their support to Swami Jeevan Chaitanya, a VHP central advisory committee member, who is on fast.
Swami Jeevan Chaitanya and 70 other Hindu saints have been protesting here with a charter of five demands.
‘We want the arrest of all those who killed Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati and those who conspired in the crime,’ Swami Jeevan Chaitanya told IANS.
‘Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati had named two persons prior to his killing and had said they were after his life. We want their immediate arrest,’ he said.
Swami Laxmanananda, a VHP leader, and four of his aides were killed in their Jaleshpata ashram Aug 23. The murders led to violence in Kandhmal district in which 36 people have been killed and more than 20,000 people have been rendered homeless.
While Maoist guerrillas have claimed responsibility for the killings, Hindu groups hold Christians responsible for the crime. Christians and their places of worship have faced large-scale attacks.

Three members of a Maoist-trained "militia" group, two of them Christians, were arrested on Monday in connection with the killing of VHP leader Swami Laxmananda Saraswati in Orissa's riot-torn Kandhamal district.
This was the first arrest in connection with the killing which took place 42 days ago, sparking an orgy of communal violence in the district.
The Crime Branch of Orissa police seized two guns from the trio, police said.
"The three persons were arrested by the special investigating team (SIT) formed to nab the culprits", Orissa's Director General of Police Manmohan Praharaj told PTI adding the arrested were taken to the police custody.
"All the three persons arrested have confessed to the crime", said crime branch inspector P K Patnaik who was instrumental in the arrest of the three youths in the age group of 30 to 32 years.
The trio, identified as Duryodhan Sunamajhi, Mundabeda Majhi and Sanatan Majhi of Kotgarh area, were produced before the sub-divisional judicial magistrate's (SDJM) court at Baliguda in Kandhamal district and remanded to police custody for seven days.
Besides two SVML guns, the police have seized two black masks and four black shirts used during the crime, the official said adding the police possessed evidences to prove the charges.
They were picked up from Baliguda police station area on the basis of specific intelligence inputs, said a member of the SIT adding that more persons were likely to be booked soon.
According to the Inspector General (IG) of Police, Crime Branch, Arun Ray, the trio belonged to the 150-strong militia group formed by Maoists to execute the killing.
"Though they were not part of the Maoist cadre, the milita group including the three, were imparted training in fire arms and execute the crime," Ray told PTI while declining to specify religion of the trio.
However, sources in the crime branch claimed two of the three persons arrested today were Christians.
Giving details of execution of the killing, Ray said the Maoists had formed a 150-member group comprising local tribals and Dalits to eliminate the VHP leader who was opposed to conversion and cow slaughter in particular.
While police was probing the Christian angle into the murder, Ray said they could come to a conclusion on the matter only after collecting evidences based on the information provided by the three arrested youths.
Besides Laxamananda, the killers had on August 23 evening gunned down sanyasini Mata Bhaktimayee, Baba Amritananda, Kishore Baba and Puranjan Ganthi, a guardian of an inmate of the Kanyashram at Jalespeta in kandhamal district.
The communal and ethnic violence in Kandhamal has so far claimed 35 lives and several houses, churches and places of worship were vandalized.

Guwahati: The death toll in the ongoing violence between Bodos and immigrant Muslim settlers in two northern Assam districts of Udalguri and Darrang went up to 32 on Sunday afternoon.
Violence over three days has forced 80,000 people from both communities to take shelter in 36 relief camps. At least 12 people have been killed in fresh violence and incidents of police firing in the curfew-bound areas of the two districts.
The violence has spread to lower Assam’s Baksa district, with reports saying that an old woman was stabbed to death by miscreants.
Principal Secretary (Home) Subhash Das told The Hindu that the State government had requested the Centre to rush 21 additional companies of paramilitary forces for deployment in the affected areas. He said 11 columns of the Army, five companies of the Central Reserve Police Force and the Assam police battalion had already been deployed.
Twenty-two relief camps were opened in Udalguri district and 14 were set up in Darrang.
Mr. Das said three days of violence left 22 dead, including 10 in police firing, in Udalguri district, and seven dead, including five in police firing, in Darrang district.
Security forces had been asked to shoot at sight those indulging in violence and arson.
Government’s concern
The administration is concerned over the attacks and killings by the two communities despite the deployment of the Army and paramilitary forces. Eyewitnesses say that a warlike situation is prevailing in the two districts. Thousands of people belonging to both the communities armed with sharp weapons, bows and arrows are engaged in violent clashes, and mobs are targeting innocent people at market places or on paddy fields.
Mahanta’s charge
The former Assam Chief Minister, Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, visited five relief camps and met the inmates. Mr. Mahanta held the State government responsible for the outbreak of violence. State BJP president Ramen Deka also visited the riot-hit areas.

'Majority of Maoist supporters in Orissa are Christians'
Bhubaneswar (PTI): Admitting that Maoist groups in Orissa derive major support from minority communities, a prominent Maoist leader has said there was reportedly pressure from both Christians and Dalits to eliminate VHP leader Laxmanananda Saraswati.
Sabyasachi Panda alias Sunil, who met a group of journalists at an undisclosed hideout on Saturday, said Saraswati was killed as he did not pay any heed to Maoist's warning. The transcript of Panda's meeting was made available to PTI on Sunday.
"We had asked Laxmanananda to desist from anti-Christian activities. He created a riot in December 2007 and subsequently targeted people indulging in cow slaughter," he said, adding people of both the communities were opposed to the seer. Noting that most of the cadre members and supporters in Orissa belonged to Christian community, Panda said, "It is a fact that Christians are in majority in our organisation. Our supporters in Orissa's Rayagada, Gajapati and Kandhamal also belonged to Christian community."
The Maoist leader, however, pointed out that though Christians were major support base of the outfit in Orissa, the situation was not similar across the country. "We do not believe in any religion or are attached to any religious groups. We are not in favour of any religion," he said claiming Laxamananda was working to revive Brahminism which was almost disappearing.

Bhubaneswar, Oct 02: Violence in riot-hit Kandhamal in Orissa spilled over to neighbouring Boudh district early today as miscreants set afire as many as 111 houses though no casualty was reported, police said.
The incident took place in the wee hours when the residents of Uma, Phatamunda, Kunukutri and Mosinaguda were in deep sleep, sources said.
The mob of over 200 miscreants went on rampage setting fire to houses from one village to another under Kantamala police station.
While highest number of 42 houses were torched at Uma village, 29 houses burnt at Mosinaguda, 27 at Phatamunda and 13 at Kunukutri village, police said.
Stating that two persons (tribals) were arrested in this connection on suspicion, Mihir Chandra Mallick, Additional District Magistrate (ADM) of Boudh, said the victims were mostly 'Pana' dalits belonging to Hindus.
"It is an ethnic problem in Boudh and not communal as Hindu dalit houses are burnt", the ADM told agencies over phone adding that the affected people were shifted to relief camps.
District Collector Mohan Prasad Mishra along with state police force rushed to the spot as the local tehsildar and others were engaged in the relief operation.
The district administration had sought additional force to control the situation.

அங்கிருந்த அனுமார் சிலையை தகர்த்தனர். பின்னர் கோவிலில் உள் வளாகத்துக்குள் தீவைத்து எரித்தனர்.
காலையில் இதுபற்றி தகவல் தெரியவந்தது. இந்து அமைப்பினர் போராட்டத்தில் குதித்தனர்.இதனால் சக்பால், பாலிசங்கர், பொரு படா ஆகிய பகுதிகளில் பதட்டம் ஏற்பட்டது கலவரம் ஏற்படாமல் தடுக்க போலீசார் குவிக்கப்பட்டு உள்ளனர்.

Late Saturday, paramilitary troops in the troubled Kandhamal district clashed with Hindus who were trying to attack a church and the nearby house of a Christian villager. The Hindu protesters began firing on the troops and injured one of them.
Two people were killed and 11 injured when the troops retaliated, Orissa police chief, Gopal Nanda, reported Sunday.
Tensions began after a revered Hindu priest and four of his followers were murdered on August 23, which led to violent riots.
Hindu hardliners claim that Christian missionaries are “bribing” poor tribespeople and low-caste Hindus to convert to Christianity by offering them free education and health care.
Thousands of people, mainly Christians, are still living in government camps or in the surrounding jungles following the torching of their homes.
Violence also erupted in the southern state of Kanataka, where on Sunday Hindu activists ransacked 10 small churches and prayer halls, police said. At least eight people including two pastors were injured.
Christians comprise 2.3 percent of India's population of 1.1 billion. Hindu-Christian clashes erupt periodically in the country.

BERHAMPUR: Mystery behind the gruesome murder of VHP leader Swami Lakshmanananda Saraswati and his four associates has deepened. The Bajrang Dal and VHP activists as well sections of the media have received a suspected Maoists’ letter where they claim that their central committee had no role in the murder.
The letter claimed that some wayward cadre of the Maoist outfit were lured by nefarious elements to commit the crime. Meanwhile naxal sympathizers of Orissa have also claimed that Maoists had no hand in the murder of the VHP activists at Jalaspata in Kandhamal district.
A copy of the letter was sent to the State joint secretary of the VHP and the State joint coordinator of the Bajrang Dal, Ramakant Rath. The letter was claimed to be written by the Kotgarh unit of the CPI-Maoist party.
‘Action planned’
As per the letter the organization would initiate action against some of their cadres in Kandhamal district who could be hired for money by communal Christian miscreants for the murder of the VHP leader and his associates. The reason for the murder was their opposition to religious conversion by missionaries and recent clash over cow slaughter in Tumudibadh area. "The State central committee of the Maoists had no knowledge of this", the letter claimed. The naxals felt police were putting the blame of murder of VHP leader on them trying to detach them from the common mass.
Many Maoist sympathizers of south Orissa have also denied the role of CPI-Maoist in the murder of VHP leaders that sparked off communal violence in Kandhamnal district.
Through a press note Dandapani Mohanty, general secretary of the Orissa Forest Mazdoor Union said Maoists had no role in the communal murders in Kandhamal district. It may be noted that Mr Mohanty earlier headed the Daman Pratirodh Manch, which was banned by the State Government for its pro-naxal activities. The case filed by against the ban order is sub judice in the Orissa High Court.
It may be noted that the State unit of the BJP is also not buying the claim of the State Government that Maoists had murdered the VHP leader.

New Delhi, Aug 28: The Congress today said the Centre has the "Constitutional measures" to protect the people in Orissa and asked Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to act fast in restoring normalcy in the state.
"The Central government is keeping a close watch... Measures of the Constitution are available. If the state government fails to protect the people, it is for the government to examine", chief of Congress' media department M Veerappa Moily told reporters here.
Noting that the situation in the state has assumed serious dimensions, he said "Naveen Patnaik has to act to control law and order. Even the Pope has now reacted to the situation."
Moily alleged the Sangh Parivar and its affiliates were targeting minorities and said it was the duty of the state government to protect them.
Moily also came down heavily on the BJP ministers in the Patnaik government and said they should be sacked for pressuring the chief minister on the issue.
He linked the Kanpur situation with that of Orissa and hinted that such acts have to be checked.
Referring to the alleged involvement of Bajrang Dal activists in making bombs in Kanpur, Moily said, "a day will come when such organisations will have to be banned".

Bhubaneswar (PTI): Seven people were killed, four of them in police firing, in unabated violence in Orissa's Kandhamal district, taking the toll to nine, in the backlash to the killing of VHP leader Laxmanananda Saraswati as curfew was clamped in all major towns of the district.
Four persons persons were killed when the police opened fire to disperse a mob which attacked places of worship, prayer halls and shops at Barakhama in Kandhamal district, Director General of Police Gopal Chandra Nanda said.
Three persons were killed when their houses were torched in Raikia area around midnight on Monday night, official sources said.
Two others, including a woman, were killed when a missionary-run orphanage was set on fire on Monday.
Almost the entire Kandhamal district was placed under indefinite curfew following continued violence. All major towns are under curfew and Rapid Action Force (RAF), CRPF and state police were deployed, Revenue Divisional Commissioner (Southern Division) Satyabrata Sahu told PTI over phone.

Widespread anger was expressed throughout the State over the brutal killing of Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati and four of his associates.
The VHP and Bajrang Dal activists burned tyres and blocked traffic in different parts of the State to ventilate their anger on the failure of the police to give protection to Swamji. He had lodged an FIR on the local police station that his life was under threat and had sought police protection. Within 26 hours of lodging the complaint, he and his disciples were killed at Jalespata Ashram under Tumudibandh block in Kandhamal district on Saturday night.
Fearing a backlash, the Kandhamal district administration clamped curfew in Phulbani town and prohibitory orders under section 144 CrPC throughout the district. All borders of the district were sealed. However, defying the orders, disciples of the Swami took out the Swami's funeral procession to another ashram at Chakapada, which is nearly 100 km away from Jalespata Ashram. More than 10,000 mourners reportedly accompanied the funeral procession. The funeral procession went through Jalespata, Tumudibandh, Paramapanka, Baataguda and reached Baliguda at 3 pm. It was supposed to go through Nuaagaan, Sarangagada, Phiringia, Bisipada Chhak and Tikabali to reach his Karmabhumi Chakapada late in night.
The people bid farewell to the departed souls with tears. People in Baliguda could not control their emotions and they even attacked the police and burnt a number of vehicles. Police had to resort to a mild lathi-charge to disperse the crowd. Reports reaching Bhubaneswar said the people were dead against the police inaction.
VHP activists allegedly burnt down a Marshal jeep OR 07 G 5882 carrying Sisters at G Udayagiri. The Sisters were allowed to leave the vehicle, said sources. Similarly, hundreds of supporters of Swamiji were moving to Tumudibandh with agitated mood, where his body was kept for last darshan.
In order to save its face, the district administration suspended the officer-in-charge of the Tumudibandh Police Station. However, it did not calm the anger of local people. They demanded that action should be taken against the District Collector and the SP. "Swamji had himself lodged the FIR. But the district administration could not react promptly to protect the precious lives," said Sudarshan Bhoi, a local of Tumudibandh area.
Reacting over the issue, the VHP and the Bajrang Dal have called for a dawn-to-dusk Orissa bandh. The BJP State unit has announced to support the bandh. In a bid to avoid further violence, the Government has ordered closure of all schools and colleges on Monday.
In order to take stock of the situation, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Sunday morning convened a high-level meeting at the State Secretariat. "All efforts would be made to arrest the culprit," he said, adding that additional police force has been mobilised and combing operation is on to nab the culprit. Police sources said 20 platoons of police force and four companies of CRPF have been mobilised to the spot.
Patnaik also ordered a judicial probe into the incident and announced that Rs 2 lakh ex-gratia would be given to the next of kin of the deceased.
The situation in the tribal dominated Kandhamal district "is tense but under control" after the killing of the VHP activists last night by unidentified attackers, Kandhamal District Collector Krishan Kumar claimed.
Meanwhile, a small thatched structure used as a prayer house was set afire by unidentified persons late on Saturday night at Tentulijhari in Sundargarh district, Inspector General of Police (Western Range) Pranabindu Acharya said.
The police have arrested Pradesh Kumar Das, an employee of the World Vision, a Christian Charity, from Khadagpur while escaping from the district at Buguda. Widespread anger was expressed throughout the State over the brutal killing of Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati and four of his associates.
The VHP and Bajrang Dal activists burned tyres and blocked traffic in different parts of the State to ventilate their anger on the failure of the police to give protection to Swamji. He had lodged an FIR on the local police station that his life was under threat and had sought police protection. Within 26 hours of lodging the complaint, he and his disciples were killed at Jalespata Ashram under Tumudibandh block in Kandhamal district on Saturday night.
Fearing a backlash, the Kandhamal district administration clamped curfew in Phulbani town and prohibitory orders under section 144 CrPC throughout the district. All borders of the district were sealed. However, defying the orders, disciples of the Swami took out the Swami's funeral procession to another ashram at Chakapada, which is nearly 100 km away from Jalespata Ashram. More than 10,000 mourners reportedly accompanied the funeral procession. The funeral procession went through Jalespata, Tumudibandh, Paramapanka, Baataguda and reached Baliguda at 3 pm. It was supposed to go through Nuaagaan, Sarangagada, Phiringia, Bisipada Chhak and Tikabali to reach his Karmabhumi Chakapada late in night.
The people bid farewell to the departed souls with tears. People in Baliguda could not control their emotions and they even attacked the police and burnt a number of vehicles. Police had to resort to a mild lathi-charge to disperse the crowd. Reports reaching Bhubaneswar said the people were dead against the police inaction.
VHP activists allegedly burnt down a Marshal jeep OR 07 G 5882 carrying Sisters at G Udayagiri. The Sisters were allowed to leave the vehicle, said sources. Similarly, hundreds of supporters of Swamiji were moving to Tumudibandh with agitated mood, where his body was kept for last darshan.
In order to save its face, the district administration suspended the officer-in-charge of the Tumudibandh Police Station. However, it did not calm the anger of local people. They demanded that action should be taken against the District Collector and the SP. "Swamji had himself lodged the FIR. But the district administration could not react promptly to protect the precious lives," said Sudarshan Bhoi, a local of Tumudibandh area.
Reacting over the issue, the VHP and the Bajrang Dal have called for a dawn-to-dusk Orissa bandh. The BJP State unit has announced to support the bandh. In a bid to avoid further violence, the Government has ordered closure of all schools and colleges on Monday.
In order to take stock of the situation, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Sunday morning convened a high-level meeting at the State Secretariat. "All efforts would be made to arrest the culprit," he said, adding that additional police force has been mobilised and combing operation is on to nab the culprit. Police sources said 20 platoons of police force and four companies of CRPF have been mobilised to the spot.
Patnaik also ordered a judicial probe into the incident and announced that Rs 2 lakh ex-gratia would be given to the next of kin of the deceased.
The situation in the tribal dominated Kandhamal district "is tense but under control" after the killing of the VHP activists last night by unidentified attackers, Kandhamal District Collector Krishan Kumar claimed.
Meanwhile, a small thatched structure used as a prayer house was set afire by unidentified persons late on Saturday night at Tentulijhari in Sundargarh district, Inspector General of Police (Western Range) Pranabindu Acharya said.
The police have arrested Pradesh Kumar Das, an employee of the World Vision, a Christian Charity, from Khadagpur while escaping from the district at Buguda. Launching the country's biggest ever anti-Maoist offensive, Security forces on Tuesday adopted a new strategy of guerilla warfare in the hunt for naxals in the dense forests of Orissa where additional paramilitary personnel have been rushed to join the long haul operation.
Backed by helicopters and sniffer dogs, over 1,000 policemen intensified their search for the maoists involved in the Nayagarh attack in which 14 policemen and one civilian were killed last Friday after failing to locate them in Gosmah forest, official sources said. Fresh reinforcements of 500 CRPF were rushed by the Centre.
"Besides using IAF choppers to spot the ultras inside jungles, the security forces deployed a large number of trained dogs," said a senior officer engaged in the four-day old combing operation.
Suspecting the presence of landmines and claymore mines in the jungles, the security forces were using sniffer dogs to locate the ultras suspected to be hiding in the caves of Singhasini hills near Buguda in Ganjam district.
The change of strategy to nab the ultras was believed to have been influenced by the death of three prominent members of the SOG, including assistant commandant Pramod Kumar Satpathy during the combing operation.
"Instead of chasing the ultras in jungles, the force will now wait for the enemies to surface as per the new strategy," an officer said.
"We do not want to sacrifice more personnel by directly confronting the ultras and raiding their hideouts. The enemies were obviously in an advantageous position inside the forests. They knew the routes and were well acquainted with the terrain," a police official engaged in the operation said.
The officer said that moonlight had helped the ultras to slip from their hideouts in Gosmah forest, which was encircled by the security personnel. "It was easy for the ultras to escape taking advatage of their knowledge of forest routes."
Personnel of Orissa police, SOG (special operation group), CRPF and Greyhound from Andhra Pradesh, were also carrying out the operation in the jungles of Ganjam, Kandhamal and Gajapati districts adjoining Nayagarh district.
While Kandhamal superintendent of police Nikhil Kanodia was leading a group in Daringibadi area, southern range DIG RP Koche was heading another group.
"Even district magistrates of several districts were asked to help in the combing operation, said to be the biggest ever anti-maoist operation in the country", claimed a senior Home department official.
Sources said that the combing operation was likely to continue for a long period.
Meanwhile, concerned over spate of naxal attacks in some States, the Home Ministry is seriously considering a proposal to raise fresh India Reserve Battations (IRBs) and CRPF Battalions.
A high-level meeting, chaired by Home Minister Shivraj Patil discussed the proposal with the Union Home Secretary, Special Secretary (Internal Security) and heads of central para-military forces.

Five days after communal clashes broke out over Christmas celebrations in Orissa's Kandhamal district in eastern India, tension persisted in the area with four people feared dead in police firing and the government finally deciding to order a judicial inquiry.
Police said on Friday that the core trouble area continued to be the Christian dominated Brahmanigaon village, about 150 km from the district headquarters of Phulbani and about 200 km fm the state capital.
On Thursday afternoon, hundreds of residents burnt some Hindu houses. Police rushed in to rescue the villagers and brought them to the station, which was also attacked.
A mob of about 500 people opened fire at the police station, a district police official told IANS. To disperse the mob, police opened fire. In the gunbattle that went on for more than an hour, at least four people were killed and three police officials injured.
The exact number of deaths is yet to be ascertained because all communication to the village has been disrupted, the official said. The roads have been blocked and telephone lines have been down too.
Leading Oriya daily The Sambad put the toll at nine, saying that four were killed in police firing and five in clashes.
The place has been a tinderbox since Monday, when trouble broke out in Brahmanigaon, which has a population of about 4,000.
Hindus and Christians clashed over Christmas celebrations. Trouble escalated in the area when some people attacked the vehicle of local Hindu leader Swami Laxmananda Saraswati near Daringbadi when he was on his way to perform a yagna in Brahmanigaon.
Dozens of churches and prayer houses were burnt, vehicles were torched and houses of both Hindus and Christians attacked in the days that followed.
At least one person died and dozens injured in the clashes.
Kandhamal district, which has a population of about 600,000 including 150,000 Christians, is considered one of the most communally sensitive regions in the state with numerous clashes reported between both Hindus and Christians in the past.

Eighty-year-old Saraswati, who led an anti-conversion movement was shifted to the SCB Medical College Hospital at Cuttack from Darinigibadi government hospital, told reporters that a group of villagers launched an attack on him on Monday at the instruction of the Congress leader.
"They attacked to eliminate me," he said adding this was for the seventh time that they failed to kill him.
Saraswati, who is a member of the VHP's 'margadarshak mandali', was attacked by a group of villagers while he was on the way to Brahmanigaom on Monday.
His driver and personal security guard were seriously injured in the incident and his car badly damaged.
While Saraswati was admitted at Darinigibadi government hospital, his security guard was rushed to M K C G Medical College Hospital at Berhampur.
Sources said the district administration of Kandhamal preferred to shift Saraswati to Cuttack hospital apprehending more danger in the locality due to presence of the VHP leader in Daringibadi area.

BHUBANESWAR: Two nuns in Mayurbhanj district were arrested on Saturday for allegedly making two non-Christian girls sing hymns in praise of Christ.
Sister Mary (60) and Sister Prema (63) were accused of attempting to forcibly convert the girls studying at Bijay Sadan, a Catholic residential school in Baghamara.
Following the arrests, Father Isaac of the Catholic Diocese in Balasore, rushed to Mayurbhanj. He said the charges were "cooked up". The arrests were made after Sarojini Murmu (12) and Anjana Behera (10) complained that they were compelled to participate in prayers against their wish. They also accused the nuns of "physically and mentally torturing" them when they refused to sing the hymns.
"The girls' parents also did not like the school making them sing hymns. They claimed that at the time of admission, school authorities had said prayers were not mandatory," Mayurbhanj SP S K Singh said.
Singh and the additional district magistrate conducted inquiries after they received an FIR on July 25. "The complaint was prima facie true," the SP said. The nuns were booked under Sections 323 (causing simple hurt) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 4 (forcibly attempting conversion) of the Orissa Freedom of Religion Act.
The issue came to light after Murmu, a Class IX student, and Behera, a Class VI student, ran away from the school hostel on July 13. However, the school did not inform the parents and approached the police only after the parents came to know about their children leaving the hostel.

BHUBANESWAR: Continuing their reign of terror, Maoists gunned down a former naib sarpanch in Malkangiri district’s Motu police limits late on Tuesday.
Sunani Jaga, 45, was pulled out of his bed and shot at by the Naxalites who descended in Kundapali village, 25 km from Motu, near Chhattisgarh border. It was not certain why Jaga was targetted.
DIG, South Western Range SK Nath said Jaga was a small time contractor after his stint as naib sarpanch. A joint team of Motu Police and CRPF proceeded to the spot and combing the area.
Sources said, the ultras suspected Jaga to be a police informer which is why he was on their hit list. He has six children.
In last one month’s time, four persons have fallen victim to Maoist violence in Orissa. Last month, the ultras had struck at Deogarh and killed three villagers in a brutal fashion.
The attack comes close on the heels of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s claim in the Assembly that Orissa is peaceful as compared to its neighbours.

Sources said, the ultras suspected Jaga to be a police informer which is why he was on their hit list. He has six children.
In last one month’s time, four persons have fallen victim to Maoist violence in Orissa. Last month, the ultras had struck at Deogarh and killed three villagers in a brutal fashion.
The attack comes close on the heels of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s claim in the Assembly that Orissa is peaceful as compared to its neighbours.

MALKANGIRI (Orissa): Naxals targeted a BSNL communication tower at Balimela in Orissa's Malkangiri district early on Tuesday morning after their attempt to blow up the major hydel project there was foiled by the police.
The superintendent of police, S K Gojbhaye, said that the ultras had planned to trigger explosions at the 360 MW Balimela hydel power plant, one of the major hydel projects in Orissa, but could not succeed because of heavy police deployment at Balimela, 40 km from Malkangiri.
Their frustration might have led them to target the BSNL tower, he said.
The police said the ultras had fixed two landmines below the tower one of which exploded partially damaging the installation. The other landmine, however, did not explode.
This is the third time that the Naxals targeted BSNL communication towers in the district this month having earlier tried to blow up such installations at Kalimela and MV-79 village.
