In the aftermath of yet another devastating car bomb in Iraq, one bystander stumbled upon this amazing sight - a baby boy lying unhurt in the wreckage.

Two people were killed and six wounded when the driver exploded his vehicle near an Iraqi army checkpoint in Mahmudiya, 20 miles south of Baghdad.

The child, who has not been identified and thought to be about a year old, was dazed and covered in soot but otherwise unharmed. He was taken to a police car and cared for by an officer.

The attack was just one of several over the weekend - further demonstrating the challenge faced by coalition forces in Iraq.

President Bush still hopes to turn the situation round, and will deliver a televised address on Thursday to plead with the war-weary American public to give his "surge" strategy more time to work.

He is facing renewed demands from Democrats for a rapid withdrawal - which are likely to be strengthened after today's report on the progress of the war by the top U.S. commander in Iraq, General David Petraeus.

He is expected to press for troop levels to be maintained by arguing that leaving in a hurry would only add to the chaos.

It was also revealed that a single sniper in Basra may have killed as many as five British soldiers with the same weapon.

Safe, for now: A policeman cradles the little boy

Most enemy gunmen in Iraq are notoriously inaccurate, but since the start of this year a single sharpshooter appears to have attacked repeatedly, picking off at least three UK soldiers and possibly two more.

Forensic tests show his rifle fires Nato-issue 5.56mm calibre bullets - the same as those used by British and American forces - rather than the heavier 7.76mm favoured by most local gunmen.

The sniper's confirmed death toll includes Rifleman Daniel Coffey, who was shot dead in February when patrolling with Iraqi police, as well as 28-year-old Danny Wilson of the Duke of Lancaster Regiment and Rifleman Aaron Lincoln, 18, who died in March.

A further pair of soldiers are also thought to have been killed by the same man, an inquest in Cumbria heard.

• Two soldiers who died in Afghanistan on Saturday were named as Sergeant Craig Brelsford and Private Johan Botha of the 2nd Battalion, The Mercian Regiment.
