Why no outrage over persecuted Hindus?

Chicago, IL, United States, — There have been several attempts at genocide since the middle of the last century. European Nazis murdered 6 million Jews in the 1940s. In the1960s Fulani-led Nigerians slaughtered around 1 million ethnic Ibos who formed the Republic of Biafra. Three decades later, majority Hutus murdered almost 1 million Tutsis in Rwanda, and Serbs did the same to about 10,000 ethnic Albanians in Kosovo. Ethnic Arabs are still killing non-Arab Sudanese; so far over half a million.
These crimes grabbed the world’s attention – albeit too late and only after the bodies were piled too high to ignore. The United Nations issued proclamations and sent aid through its human rights and refugee organizations. Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and others loudly condemned the perpetrators, documenting the atrocities and raising money for their aid programs. Several international celebrities took on highly visible roles and massive protests worldwide gave vent to peoples’ outrage.
Yet there is another case of ethnic cleansing in numbers that dwarf these crimes, a-genocide-in-the-making, that has been proceeding for decades with little more than the occasional whimper. When Bangladesh won its independence from Pakistan in 1971, Hindus made up almost one in five of its citizens. Today, they are less than one in ten. Demographers and others estimate that approximately 20 million Bangladeshi Hindus have disappeared.
Twenty million people are missing, and many more are at risk – but no George Clooney or Angelina Jolie has stood up; no declaration has come from the United Nations, despite its mandate to stop such atrocities. Even the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees has done nothing to help the victims, though several organizations have documented their suffering.
The international human rights industry, too, has been silent. Amnesty International has devoted pages upon Web pages to the United States and Guantanamo and spends a high percentage of its resources criticizing Israeli democracy. Its current cover story is about Shia Muslims being “treated like second class citizens.” But to date it has shown no stomach to oppose what could be the worst case of ethnic cleansing in our time. The last time AI or Human Rights Watch gave the Bangladeshi Hindus even passing mention was in 2006.
This is not the first time the world has ignored mass murder in South Asia. Toward the end of the Bangladeshi war of independence, Pakistani troops and their Islamist allies slaughtered between 2 and 3 million mostly Hindu Bangladeshis – noncombatants, women, children and the elderly. All manner of brutality from mutilation to ritualized gang rape accompanied the carnage, but the world still remains silent even when the victims’ descendants cry out for justice.
NATO sent troops into Kosovo when thousands were at risk but did nothing to save millions in East Bengal. Hindu refugees flood West Bengal, India, and live in semi-legal squalor, but the UNHCR refuses to recognize them as refugees. Earlier this year I visited almost two dozen extra-legal camps in West Bengal and saw these people’s need for help.
Several refugees and others attribute this disparity to religious bias. Fear of terrorist reprisals, the lure of petrodollars, and a rigid political correctness prevent many from taking a stand against Islamists, according to one Indian activist. But he and others blame “our own nature” that mitigates against activism and tolerates corruption.
As I told Indian journalists, “Everyone in India seems to know about the Bangladeshi Hindus, but no one is doing anything about it.” The actions of Bangladeshi Islamists, while atrocious, are not unexpected. However, their treatment by Indian Hindus is surprising.
Imagine refugees barely escaping with their lives, leaving murdered loved ones behind. They described crossing into the largest Hindu nation in the world, but found no welcome in the arms of their co-religionists. Instead, they were “treated like trespassers,” and given no aid or shelter. They reported being forced into camps, where their captors took advantage of then no less than did their Islamist tormentors.
In West Bengal, refugees testified that locals let them squat on the land, but in exchange they were forced to attend communist rallies. They received voter’s cards only to be told that officials of the Communist Party of India/Marxist would fill them in for them. But if anyone else desired the land, the refugees would be ejected; something I observed firsthand.
Today an economic and military powerhouse, India has yet to advocate for the thousands of victims streaming across its borders. It has never pressed the case of the Bangladeshi Hindus before any international body. If it has protested the ethnic cleansing to Bangladesh, it has done so meekly.
Moreover, this great nation seems content to cede the integrity of its borders. Several refugees testified that even now Islamists from surrounding villages and from Bangladesh attack them with the knowledge of West Bengal officials.
Once the CPIM got wind of my visits to the camps, we would alter our itinerary to arrive before the local commissar intimidated refugees into silence about anything that might embarrass the communist government. In one camp their tactic appeared to work. We were about to leave when one elderly woman stood up, with a commissar looking on, and said, “I’m not afraid of anybody,” and began to talk about the ongoing attacks.
Is the Indian government’s silence little more than a ploy to keep votes, a reflection of its pseudo-secularist policy? If it is, that does not explain the silence of those parties that have no chance of gaining significant numbers of Muslim or communist votes, such as the Bharatiya Janata Party and other rightwing parties. Why are they not championing the Bangladeshi Hindus, and using this as a rallying point for all Indians who recognize the immorality of remaining silent while others are oppressed?
In my travels in West Bengal, when I offered to act with others to protest what is happening there, the response was almost always, “People are afraid.” That made sense when we were speaking with refugees who have known nothing in the way of protection or the law. But this was the answer of Indian citizens, often people whose organizations claim to be working for the refugees.
In my advocacy for the refugees in the West, I encounter skepticism from those who question India’s silence if things are so dire; who question why there are few public protests; who ask, after hearing about attacks inside India, why none of the 800 million Indian Hindus have traveled to these camps to defend the victims against Islamist aggression.

Protest over statues at Bangladesh airport
Updated October 16, 2008 21:33:24
Authorities in Bangladesh have been forced to remove new decorations at the international airport in the capital Dhaka after Muslim protesters threatened to destroy them.
Officials had commissioned the country's best-known sculptor, Mrinal Haq, to produce statues of five local folk singers to cheer up the decidedly drab complex.
But thousands of Muslim hardliners say the sculptures erected outside Zia International airport were idols, which are strictly forbidden in Islam, and had threatened to attack the artwork with power tools.
Authorities say the folk singers will now be replaced by a fountain.

Acid, the new weapon for disfiguring women
by Nozrul Islam
Wives, daughters, girls are punished by having acid thrown on them, permanently disfiguring them. The government prohibits the sale of the corrosive liquids, but they are easily found on the market. The phenomenon is spreading. The victims now include children and adult males.
Dhaka (AsiaNews) - Women in Bangladesh suffer marginalization. And the violence against them, at home and outside, continues to grow. Recently, a new weapon has been added: acid, which disfigures their faces and bodies.
Parul's husband is 30 years old. In 2000, he disfigured her by throwing acid into her face, because her relatives had not paid the agreed dowry. The victim's mother presented a charge a few months ago, because until then she was unable to leave her daughter's side, who was always in various hospitals. The husband - who everyone knows to be guilty - is a free man.
Nasima has an 11-year-old mentally retarded daughter who was raped. She accused the attackers two years ago, and since then she has received continual threats. An acid attack left her torso and back devastated. Now she promises that she will not charge her daughter's attackers, and will withdraw her previous accusation.
Domestic and international awareness-raising campaigns led the government to pass, in 2002, a strict law against the custom of throwing acid into the faces of young women for economic reasons, or because of jealousy, or because they resist sexual advances. After a certain reduction in these cases, they are now on the increase again. There were 1,428 from 2002-2007, 116 cases from January to August 2007, which rose to 125 in the same period this year. Since 2002, there have been only 190 trials, in which 254 defendants have been sentenced: 11 to death, 89 to labor camps. Authorities are unable to say how many of the sentences have been carried out, and how many of those sentenced are in fact in prison.
According to the law, acid can be bought only with a license, but anyone is able to procure it on the open market, at a price of about 60 euro cents per kilo: this is enough to disfigure a person, often completely "melting" the throat, trachea, esophagus, with horrible suffering.
Most recently, the victims have not been only young women, but also children, out of vengeance against their parents, and men, especially over land disputes and romantic rivalries.

Bangladesh Court Jails Islamic Militants
DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) — A court in northwestern Bangladesh sentenced seven Islamic militants Thursday to life in prison after finding them guilty of carrying out a series of bombings in 2005, a prosecutor said.
The men were involved in five separate attacks on Aug. 17, 2005, in Chapainawabganj, a town 145 miles west of Dhaka, Prosecutor Jahangir Mohammad Selim said, citing the judge's verdict.
No one was injured in the five bombings.
The men belonged to the Jumatul Mujahedeen Bangladesh group, which wants to establish strict Islamic rule in Bangladesh, a nation of 145 million people governed by secular laws.
The group has been blamed for more than 400 small bombs that exploded the same day across Bangladesh, killing two people and wounding dozens, as well as for a string of bombings since then that killed another 24 people and wounded dozens.
No recent attacks have occurred, however, and the government claims it has neutralized the militant group.
Six top members of Jumatul Mujahedeen Bangladesh were hanged last year, including its leader, Shaikh Abdur Rahman, after they were found guilty of carrying out bombings and killing two judges.
On Thursday, five of the defendants were in court while the two others were tried in absentia, Selim said. All can appeal the verdict.

Rare statues disappear
23/12/2007 14:14 - (SA)
Dhaka - Two rare Hindu statues of a major deity have disappeared from Bangladesh's main airport as they were about to be shipped to Paris for a museum exhibition, police said on Sunday.
The artefacts - two ancient statues of the Hindu god Vishnu - were in a packed carton that went missing from Zia International Airport in the capital Dhaka late on Saturday, deputy commissioner of police Khandaker Rafiqul Islam said.
They were part of 188 rare cultural items being sent to the Guimet Museum in the French capital for a major international exhibition on Bangladesh history and culture, he said.
"We have detained 11 men from the air cargo operator and airport staff for interrogation," he said, adding the authorities have also suspended further shipment of the remaining artefacts.
Majority-Muslim Bangladesh was first created as East Pakistan following the subcontinent's independence from British rule in 1947. It won independence from Pakistan with aid from Hindu-majority India during a war in 1971.
The rare statues represent a deity known as the preserver of the universe and were selected from five state-run museums after an agreement between the French embassy and the government's cultural affairs ministry.

NE militants working from Bangladesh: Lapang
Shillong, Nov 08: A day after a Deputy Superintendent of Police was killed in a gunbattle with HNLC militants in the state, Meghalaya Chief Minister DD Lapang on Thursday reiterated that the militant outfits of the North East have their bases in Bangladesh and were operating from there.
"It cannot be denied that the militant groups of the North East, be it the Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) or any other outfit, have their bases in Bangladesh. We have been asking the Centre to arrange for flushing them out." Lapang told a crowded press conference here.
The DSP of Ri Bhoi district RP Diengdoh and an HNLC militant were killed in an early morning gun battle between security forces and militants in a remote village at Nongpoh, which is the Chief Minister's home constituency.
The Centre has been pressuring Dhaka to demolish the camps of the NE militants, Lapang said. "Unless the government of Bangladesh cooperates, nothing can be done."
Asked whether HNLC was showing signs of resurgence, he said, "the militancy problem has come down, but the police has to remain alert. The recent incidents were a follow-up of constant vigilance."
Before yesterday's encounter, five militants of the HNLC were shot dead by the police in Shillong on October 30.
He appealed to the HNLC cadres to join the mainstream.
Stating that state government had asked the Centre to increase allocation to improve the state's police machinery and to conduct training of the officers outside the state, he underlined the need to raise an all-woman battalion.
A residential complex, equipped with school, health facilities and quarters, for the state's police force were also on the anvil, the Chief Minister said.

Bangla Cartoonist Jailed For 'hurting Religious Sentiments'
Wednesday 19th of September 2007
A freelance scribe and cartoonist in Bangladesh has been arrested on charges of 'hurting religious sentiments' through a cartoon published in a magazine, copies of which were confiscated after the government called it 'a conspiracy to destabilise the country'.
Arifur Rahman was taken into custody for interrogation, media reports said Wednesday.
Also arrested were the editor of daily Prathom Alo and its magazine Alpin. The newspaper management issued a statement expressing regret and an undertaking that it would not carry any cartoon or writing by Rahman.
Entitled 'Naam' (name), the cartoon reportedly ridiculed the Prophet by adding his name (Mohammad) before an animal, the government said.
The government's action came after a delegation of Muslim clerics and leaders of Islami Oikya Jote (OIJ), a conglomerate of religious parties, met Information Advisor Mainul Hosain to protest against the cartoon.
'It is a conspiracy to destabilise the country. We are very concerned over the issue,' Mainul Hosain told reporters after the meeting.
The conspirators want to throw the country into a chaotic situation, he claimed. He asked everyone to remain alert against the plot so that the conspirators cannot be successful, New Age newspaper quoted him as saying.

Bangladesh hit by student riots
Student protests quickly turned into a full-scale riot
Dozens of students and police have been injured in two days of rioting on university campuses in Bangladesh.
Correspondents say the unrest is the most serious challenge yet to the military-backed emergency government.
The violence took place in three universities in or near the capital, Dhaka, as well as in the southern city of Chittagong and Kushtia in the west.
Late on Tuesday, officials said troops would withdraw from Dhaka university, one of the students' main demands.
Protests are banned in Bangladesh under a state of emergency announced by the military-backed caretaker government which took power six months ago.
'Troublemakers'
Many of the demonstrators called for the country to return to democracy, which the government has promised to restore by the end of next year.
The army has kept a low profile during the protests
In the worst clashes at Dhaka University, students threw stones and lit fires across the campus. Police responded with batons and tear gas.
The students burnt an effigy of the army chief, Moeen U Ahmed, and tried to assault the vice chancellor, police said.
Dozens of vehicles were set on fire, including an army jeep.
The BBC's Waliur Rahman in Dhaka says that two other military governments in the past - that of Ziaur Rahman and Muhammad Ershad - were both brought down in protests that were started by students.
The army is reported to be keeping a low profile in the clashes, leaving the job of confronting the students to the police.
But the government has said that action will be taken against troublemakers, who it says will be removed from campuses if necessary.
Late on Tuesday the authorities offered to remove the contentious army camp in Dhaka. They also announced a judicial inquiry into the riots and said soldiers could face prosecution.
The protesters called on the military government to go
Troops are accused of triggering the violence at Dhaka University by picking a fight with students.
Students in Dhaka told the BBC that they wanted the army not only to leave the university but also to withdraw from politics.
There was widespread popular support for the interim government when it came to power in January, vowing to stamp out corruption before returning the country to democracy.
But discontent has been rising in recent months, most notably over with the rapidly rising cost of living.

Ex-Bangladesh minister gets 31 years for helping militants
Posted Thu Jul 26, 2007 10:00pm AEST
A former Bangladeshi minister has been jailed for 31 years for aiding Islamic militants who were hanged for murdering two judges in a nationwide terror campaign to impose Sharia law, police said.
Aminul Huq, telecommunications minister in the emergency-ruled country's most recent elected government, was convicted and sentenced by a court in the northwestern town of Rajshahi.
Bangladesh executed six Islamic militant leaders convicted of the murder of the two judges in March.
The extremists were also accused of masterminding a country-wide wave of bomb attacks that shook the Muslim nation of 144 million people.
The attacks included 400 almost simultaneous blasts in almost every main town on August 17, 2005.
The attacks were part of a campaign aimed at forcing Bangladesh to replace its Muslim but secular legal system, which dates from the British colonial period, with traditional Islamic law.
At least 28 people were killed and hundreds wounded in the attacks, and an ensuing crackdown saw some 1,000 members of the Jamayetul Mujahideen Bangladesh group arrested.
The blasts forced the then-prime minister Khaleda Zia, of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, to admit that the government had underestimated the threat from Islamists.
The Islamist-allied government had earlier denied claims that senior members of the government had turned a blind eye to the activities of the extremists for political gain.

Bangladesh security forces nabbed four militants and recovered 15 hand grenades during a special campaign to check the regrouping of the extremists.
The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested four cadres of the banned terror outfit Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) and recovered 5 kg power gel and 15 high power hand grenade at Satuta under Bajitpur in Kishoreganj district, 150 km northwest of the capital Dhaka on Wednesday.
The arrested extremists have been identified as Deen Islam, 50, an Imam of Satura Jama Masjid, Harun, 21, Abdul Hannan, 22, and Mohammod Hossain, 25. All are residents of Satura village of Bajitpur upazila.
Based on information given by JMB cadre arrested last week from Mymensingh, a RAB-9 team led by Lieutenant Commander Majharul Huq arrested the JMB cadres and recovered the power gel and the hand grenades from Hilochia Shakua village under Bajitpur upazila, ASP Ashraf of the RAB was quoted as saying by The Daily Star on Thursday.
Hundreds of activists of different militant outfits, especially operatives of JMB, who went into hiding following the arrest, trial and execution of its top leaders on March 30, 2007, were trying to regroup under the supervision of the seven majlish-e-shura (highest policy-making body) members.
Security forces have been put on high-alert after intelligence agencies feared suicide attacks targeting political leaders and key strategic installations by the banned terror outfit JMB.

Police arrest Bangladeshi ex-PM
What the arrest means
Police in Bangladesh have arrested former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina after a raid on her house in Dhaka.
She was later brought to a court in the capital amid heavy security.
Sheikh Hasina faces corruption charges relating to her time in office from 1996 to 2001. She is also an accused in the killings of four political rivals.
Sheikh Hasina has denied any crime and says the arrest is a "conspiracy to expel her from politics". The arrest sparked angry protests from supporters.
"Neither myself nor my family were ever involved in any sort of corruption," a lawyer quoted Hasina as telling the court.
Her lawyers said the court had turned down their submissions not to detain her, a move which they said was "unlawful and untenable".
"We will come out soon with all the details," one lawyer told reporters.
Bangladesh crisis Q&A
The military-backed government has barred her from leaving the country.
Sheikh Hasina was arrested after a two-and-a-half hour raid on her house, involving about 1,000 policemen, the BBC's Abdullah Muyid in Dhaka reports.
Police later used batons and rubber bullets to drive away protesters chanting "release Hasina, release Hasina". At least eight protesters were injured, witnesses say.
Protests also broke out at Tungipara, Sheikh Hasina's ancestral home in the south-west, and in other places across the country, reports say.
Khaleda Zia case
The head of Bangladesh's military-backed caretaker government, Fakhruddin Ahmed, said after the arrest that no-one in the country was above law.
"Anyone involved in corruption will be tracked down and prosecuted," he said.
Police filed two cases against Sheikh Hasina in June for extorting 80 million taka ($1.16 million) from two businessmen. Monday's arrest was related to one of those cases.
Sheikh Hasina leads the Awami League Party
"The court has ordered Sheikh Hasina detained for one month," Begum Motia Chowdhury, a senior leader of her Awami League Party, told Reuters news agency.
The former prime minister's son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, told Reuters from his home in the US that the law enforcement agencies were "going beyond their limits", but that he had "no plan to return to Bangladesh immediately but will try to organise a protest worldwide".
Sheikh Hasina, who leads the Awami League, is the daughter of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who led Bangladesh to independence from Pakistan in 1971.
Her bitter rival, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader, Khaleda Zia, also faces criminal charges and has been ordered to appear before a court by 26 August over tax evasion allegations.
Since January this year, Bangladesh has been governed by a military-backed emergency government, which has promised to root out corruption.
More than 150 prominent politicians, civil servants and businessmen have been arrested.
The government says elections will be held before the end of 2008.

BSF keeping eye on madrassas
Silchar (Assam), July 5 (PTI): A watch is being kept by the BSF on several new madrassas that have been set up in Assam's Karimganj and Dhubri districts along the Indo-Bangladesh border, a senior official said today.
Though there is no specific allegations against them, BSF's IGP (Assam-Meghalaya sector) P K Misra told reporters: "It must be treated with concern and a strict watch is being kept on their activities."
Speaking about militants, he said a list of militants believed to be sheltering in the neighbouring country has been given to the Bangladesh Rifles several times but no action has been taken by it so far.
The BSF has also initiated special steps to provide security to farmers working at Harinagar on the banks of the Surama river along the border with Bangladesh in Cachar district, he said.
River patrolling by BSF has been intensified and security measures along the river banks have been stepped up.
Misra said said the borders in Mankachar and Karimganj district had been turned into into a "cattle corridor" by criminals who smuggled cows into Bangladesh.

TERROR HUB: The militants were arrested on the basis of information provided by Jalaluddin in Lucknow.
New Delhi: West Bengal's CID on Sunday arrested three accomplices of Harkat-ul-Jehad al-Islam's (HuJI) India chief Jalaluddin, nabbed in Lucknow on Saturday, from districts adjoining this city.
DIG Rajib Kumar of CID told PTI that the three men – Akbar, Azizul Rahman and Mokhtar, who are closely associated with the dreaded terrorist – were arrested on the basis of information provided by Jalaluddin during his interrogation by police in Lucknow.
Jalaluddin is the prime suspect in the abduction of Khadim Shoes chief Partho Roy Burman and the three men nabbed today were also linked to the case, police said.
Kumar said Jalaluddin would be brought to Kolkata in the next few days for interrogation. It might take more than two days because there were some legal formalities to be sorted out. A three-member CID team has gone from here to Lucknow to seek his transit remand.
Sources said the arrested militants be produced in a city court on Monday morning.
Partho Roy Burman was abducted on July 21, 2001 and freed a week later after his family reportedly paid a ransom of Rs five crore.
Police in Lucknow on Saturday arrested Jalaluddin, who allegedly masterminded Roy Burman's abduction and was also involved in a blast on the Shramjeevi train and last year's attack in the Sankat Mochan temple in Varanasi.
