Hindus, Sikhs and Parsis celebrate Janmashtami in Lahore
From our ANI Correspondent
Lahore, Sep 5: A large number of Hindus, Sikhs and Parsis celebrated Janmashtami at the Krishna Mandir on Lahore's Ravi Road on Tuesday.
The temple echoed with hymns and bhajans. The Hindu community observed a fast on the day, bresking it at midnight.
Festivities for Janmashtami started with the initiation of the Japa (recital) of Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya eight days ago by Pundit Bhagat Lal Khokhar.
Tuesday's ceremony started with the blowing of a conch and the ringing of temple's bells.
People worshipped and sang hymns in praise of Lord Krishna, such as the Gopika Geetam. The devotees then bathed an idol of Lord Krishna with milk and chanted his name 108 times.
Women taking part in the ceremony applied tilak to Lord Krishna's forehead, offered flowers, performed aarti, and read a portion of the bhagavatam that deals with the birth of Lord Krishna.
Later, people broke a pot full of butter, because butter is considered to be Lord Krishna's favourite food, the Daily Times reported.
Sunita, a participant, said women of Hindu faith decorated their houses to welcome Lord Krishna.
They also prepared sweets and offered them to the deity.
"This creates the feeling that Lord Krishna was in the house and had made the footprints," Sunita said.
