Europe's largest Hindu temple draws crowds in Germany
As Europe has grown more diverse through immigration, new religions have made their way into the social framework. Eastern religions like Buddhism and Hinduism have received more attention and when the Dalai Lama visits Germany his lectures draw huge crowds.
Although it may seem an unlikely place, Europe’s largest Hindu temple - the Kamadchi Ampal - stands in Hamm, located in Germany’s western state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Led by Tamil priest Siva Sri Paskarakurukkal from Sri Lanka, the temple has become a gathering place for Hindu leaders and followers throughout Germany.
The temple was built in large part by Indian specialists and contains numerous shrines where the gods are believed to dwell. There is a 17-meter tall ornately decorated temple tower with a bell where it’s believed the goddess Kamadchi rests.
The temple was also constructed by German architect and Hamm-native Heinz-Rainer Eichhorst. Although successful in his field, Eichhorst had no knowledge of Hindu temples or Eastern architecture. He accompanied the priests to southern India to learn more and returned to Germany to embark on the project.
The temple was finally completed in 2002 and draws up to 1,000 worshipers on religious holidays. They also hold an annual festival with an extensive parade that sees thousands of visitors converge on the city.
