Guwahati: One person was killed and 20 people were injured in a bomb blast suspected to have been triggered by the United Liberation Front of Asom in the Bamunimaidan locality here on Saturday.
Police said a bomb kept in a three-wheeler went off at 11.45 a.m. at the Railway Colony market of Bamunimaidan, a busy commercial area, leading to the explosion of three gas cylinders in the shops nearby. Several shops were gutted. The windowpanes of nearby houses were shattered.
The three-wheeler, in which the bomb was kept hidden, was blown to pieces.
The vehicle had a sticker of the Indian airline on its body. Additional Superintendent of Police Rajen Singh said the police were trying to ascertain the facts.
They said it was not immediately known whether the driver of the van was among the critically injured persons.
The cylinder blasts caused panic. There was confusion over whether another blast had taken place.
The deceased was identified as Ramlal Das (60), a cobbler from Begusarai in Bihar. There were heart-rending scenes as the family members and relatives of the victims gathered at the site. The injured were taken to the Guwahati Medical College and Hospital.
Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi condemned the incident as “an act of cowardice” and asked the Director-General of Police R.N. Mathur to review the security measures in and around the city and other parts of the State.
