New Delhi: The BJP welcomed the Supreme Court verdict upholding 27 per cent reservation for OBC's in educational institutions supported by the Central government saying it was a victory for the downtrodden sections of the society.
Reacting to the judgement, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said, "We wanted the reservation and are happy about it but the problem is that government had promised that within three years it will create extra seats so that nobody suffers."
Javadekar said the reservation was very much required but the attitude of Union Human Resource Minister Arjun Singh had created problems in implementing the reservation laws.
"Had he been little considerate towards the concerns of those opposing it, the implementation could have been without controversies or friction," he said, reminding that all political parties including BJP had supported the Bill in Parliament.
Javadekar did not agree with the suggestion that the political parties were indulging in competitive populism and said the reservation for the poor and downtrodden sections was a natural justice and any growth has to be inclusive,
“Nobody could exclude a major section like OBC who deserved attention. The BJP always stood by the spirit of social justice,” he added.
