Islam: Fasting during Ramadan increases risk of rare stroke, says study

Rome, 16 April (AKI) - Prolonged fasting may increase the risk of a rare type of stroke, according to a new study.

The research was conducted over a period of five years in hospitals in Iran, a Muslim country where the holy Muslim fasting month of Ramadan is observed.

The results of the study were presented by Mohammad Saadatnia of the Isfahan University of Medical Sciences at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Neurology in Chicago on Tuesday.

Saadatnia led a team of researchers in the study that was conducted in three hospitals in Isfahan in central Iran.

Previous research has shown that fasting during Ramadan does not influence the rate of strokes. However, this latest study found that during the month of Ramadan, the average number of people admitted for cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST), was 5.5, compared with 2.0 during the rest of the year.

CVST is a rare type of stroke which mostly affects young adults and children and is more common among women.

There was no difference between the two groups of patients in terms of the average age of each group and the ratio of men to women.

"These results need to be confirmed by other studies, but they should be looked at carefully," said Saadatnia.

"Coexistence of usual risk factors, such as oral contraceptive and coagulopathic disorders, along with dehydration in patients, while prolonged fasting can be the reason for increased susceptibility to CVST. People and their physicians need to be aware of possible complications of prolonged fasting."
