EC stops broadcast of Modi’s propaganda channel in Gujarat

New Delhi, Oct 12: The Election Commission on Friday issued orders to stop the broadcast of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s Vande Gujarat television channel. The EC ordered the channel’s broadcast to be stopped two days after it announced the poll schedule for Assembly Elections in the state. The model code of conduct had come into effect immediately after that.

In its Friday’s order, the Commission also banned the import of liquor into Gujarat from neighbouring states. Further, it instructed the state government to prepare 4.4 lakh voter identity cards and not to implement the transfer orders issued in the past month.

Earlier, while announcing the poll schedule on Wednesday, Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswamy had made it clear that extra precautionary measures were being put into place to ensure free-and-fair polls in the communally sensitive state. Paramilitary forces would be requisitioned from nearby states so as to ensure that a strict vigil is maintained during the polls, he had informed.

The CEC had also announced that electronic voting machines would be used in all the polling booths and rigorous check would be ensured so that only voters with genuine ID cards are allowed to poll.

On Wednesday, the EC announced that Gujarat would go to polls in two phases on December 11 and 16, while the results will be out on the 23rd of the month.
