After 18 Yrs Hindu Festival Dusshera to Be Celebrated in Kashmir
By Fayaz Wani

Srinagar, Oct 20: The Hindu festival of Dusshera will be celebrated in violence hit Kashmir by Kashmiri Hindus after 18 years.

Kashmiri Hindus enmasse migrated from Kashmir in the 1990s after violence broke out.

Dussehra is also known as Vijaya Dasami, because of the victory of Ram over Ravana. On this day Lord Rama killed the great demon and king of Lanka, Ravana.

A Kashmiri Hindu organization, Kashmiri Pandit Sangarash Samiti said the festival, celebrated as victory of good over evil, will be held in Srinagar after a gap of 18 years. "A religious procession would be taken out in the city in a peaceful atmosphere", Samiti President, Sanjay Tickoo, said.

Hindus celebrate the Dushera festival with much joy and enthusiasm at the end of the nine days of the Navratri festival to commemorate Hindu Lord Rama's victory over the Demon King Ravana, which signifies the victory of good over evil.

It is one of the biggest Hindu festivals in India. It is celebrated with great fanfare in most parts of India.

On Dussehra, the effigies of devil Ravana, his son and brother - Meghnadh and Kumbhakarna are set on fire.

In burning the effigies, the people are asked to burn the evil within them, and thus follow the path of truth and goodness, bearing in mind the instance of Ravana, who despite all his might and majesty was destroyed for his evil ways.

After the mass migration of Kashmiri Hindus from Kashmir in the 1990s, their Dusshera festival was not celebrated here. But now with the situation in Kashmir improving, Hindus have decided to celebrate the festival again.

Fayaz Wani reports on life in Srinagar, Kashmir.
