On the eve of the fifth anniversary commemoration of the brutal 2002 terrorist bombings, BaliTV, the island's largest private television station, will air the documentary film Through The Ashes. The movie narrates the impacts of the cowardly attack on the lives of the Balinese people and several individual survivors of the tragedy.

"The documentary will premiere on Thursday, Oct. 11, 2007, at 10.05 p.m. local time," BaliTV managing editor Siluh Gayatri said.

The 2002 bombings took place on the night of Oct. 12, when a small group of terrorists detonated powerful explosives at the packed Sari Club and Paddy's, two popular nightspots in Bali's tourism haven of Kuta. The explosion killed 202 people -- mostly foreigners -- wounded over 300 people, threw the island's tourism industry down a dark abyss, and, significantly, shattered the image of the island as a peaceful place.

"It was a decisive period for the Balinese and this movie, to some extent, will provide viewers with the dynamics of that period as seen through the eyes of a number of survivors," she said.

The documentary was the result of a collaboration between BaliTV and Mira Star Production.

"It was BaliTV's first international joint production. Our reporters were involved extensively in the process of constructing the narrative of the movie. Moreover, the documentary uses a significant amount of footage from our archives," she said.

The 60-minute-long movie is a tapestry of colorful accounts, heart-moving testimonies and dramatic images.

Initially, it centers around Mira Star, an Australian who has lived in Bali since 1987. When the bombs exploded, Mira was in Kuta with her husband, Tansen, and grandson, Sai. The explosions injured them.

Despite their injuries, the three managed to provide assistance to the other survivors, including Phil Britten, the captain of Perth's Kingsley Football Club. Phil lost seven team mates in the bombings.

The movie then explores the accounts of doctors, victims and volunteers of the critical moments during and after the attack. Alongside interviews with some of those directly affected by the bombings, Through the Ashes explores the impact on the people of Bali as a whole, offering an insight into a culture that is very different from Western environments.

"The documentary features the Balinese's non-violent, ritual-oriented responses to the tragedy and an interview with Pedanda Gunung, an influential high priest who gives a philosophical frame to the peaceful, tolerant nature of Balinese Hinduism," Gayatri said
