Gunmen kill 23 Yazidi members in Iraq
BAGHDAD April 22 (UPI) -- Gunmen in the Iraqi city of Mosul killed 23 members of a religious minority Sunday, while a series of raids and bombings occurred in Baghdad.
Mosul police said the unidentified gunmen pulled the 23 Yazidi followers from a bus and shot them dead while leaving individuals of other faiths unharmed, the BBC reported.

The Yazidi faith, which is followed primarily by ethnic Kurds, focuses on an angelic figure deemed evil by some Christians and Muslims.

Meanwhile in Baghdad, a series of raids by joint U.S.-Iraqi forces resulted in the arrests of 42 terrorists and the deaths of two other radicals.

Baghdad officials informed the Kuwait News Agency Sunday that the collaborative sweeps across the Iraqi capital resulted in the capture or death of 44 terrorists, including the arrest of a suspected leader of the al-Qaida organization.

Baghdad police said 12 people also were killed Sunday and 75 others wounded by two car bombs at the city's Hay al-Elam crossroad.

A U.S. soldier also was reported killed by small-arms fire Saturday in the eastern section of Baghdad. That death marked the 71st U.S. fatality in Iraq since the start of April.
