India aims to end malnutrition by 2015: Ramadoss

New Delhi, April 24: Union Health Minister Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss has said that India aims to end malnutrition by 2015 and has already started working in this direction.

"In a few years, malnourishment is going to be a thing of the past for India. We are definitely working towards achieving that goal and for that we need to work in tandem with all our partners," Ramadoss said at the launch of a government programme to reduce anaemia in children.

A Government survey released this year found that 46 percent of children under the age of three years were undernourished.

Ramadoss also slammed India`s record of providing healthcare to its women and children.

"It is really a cause of concern for the government and sometimes in international forum, we feel ashamed that India has these parameters. On one side, where we have a healthy growth, on the other side, we have these statistics, which are worst in the world and we need to take cognizance," he said.

The National Family Health Survey found that the percentage of women and children in India who were anaemic had increased to 56 percent and 79 percent respectively since the late 1990s.

Ramadoss also said the government, among a package of new measures, would provide children with iron tablets to prevent anaemia as well as increase the number of health workers in rural areas to detect and help malnourished infants.

Iron deficiency anaemia is the commonest medical disorder in pregnancy, adversely affecting maternal and fatal health.

Despite several national programmes targeted at control and treatment of anaemia during pregnancy, the success has not been as anticipated, since the majority of women present late.

Adolescent anaemia is easy to diagnose and easy to treat. Yet it is rampant and not being identified. Majority is not even aware of haemoglobin or iron resulting in colossal economic and public health costs. Appropriate anaemia control programme for adolescents do not exist in any country.

Keeping this in mind, 12 by 12 initiative has been launched with an overall objective of ensuring that every child by the age of 12 years has haemoglobin of 12g percent.

This innovative initiative is jointly being taken by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, World Health Organisation, Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India and United Nations Children`s Fund along with other partners.
