Minister 'sorry' for murder slur

Mr Fernandes' comments have proved highly controversial
India's labour minister has apologised after appearing to declare support for sacked workers who allegedly beat their former boss to death.

In comments that outraged business leaders, Oscar Fernandes said the death should "serve as a warning" to managers to treat workers compassionately.

Mr Fernandes has now said that his views were "misinterpreted".

Lalit Kishore Chaudhary, of Graziano Trasmissioni India, died on Monday at the company factory in Greater Noida.

'Profound apologies'

Speaking after the murder at a press conference on Tuesday, Mr Fernandes said that there were reports that the workers had been sacked.

He said that the incident should "serve as a warning for the managements. It is my appeal to the managements that the workers should be dealt with compassion.

"Every worker tries to get a job and to retain it. Hire and fire policy is not a peaceful way of workers' functioning in an organisation," he said.

Police said that Mr Chaudhary, a father with one son, was hit on the head with either a stick or an iron rod and was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital.

Mr Fernandes retracted his comments on Wednesday after they were met with shock by many Indians.

"My profound apologies to everybody who feels hurt," he said. "I would like to put an end to this chapter by saying I am sorry.

"I had expressed my condolences to the family. I had just put my point of view before the media. I apologise if my statement has hurt anyone's feelings."

The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry said it was "flabbergasted" by the comments, while the Confederation of Indian Industry said that "no dispute can be settled by murdering an adversary".

Business leaders have also warned that the killing may damage the country's reputation among international firms.

But Trade Minister Kamal Nath has insisted that the incident "would not be allowed to mar India's position as an investment-friendly destination".

Nearly 300 workers at Graziano Trasmissioni, an Italian car parts maker, were dismissed two months ago after they demanded pay rises and allegedly ransacked its offices.

The workers have denied killing Mr Chaudhary.
