Shi'a Muslims mark Imam anniversary

Najaf - Hundreds of thousands of Shi'as marked the anniversary on Monday of the death of Imam Ali, the most revered imam in Shi'a Islam, in the central Iraqi city of Najaf amid tight security, officials said.

"Hundreds of thousands of Iraqis, Arabs and foreigners, among them five thousand Iranians, have been commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Ali since dawn amid peace and security," Muslim Naji, the spokesperson for Najaf province, said.

The pilgrims flocked to the city and the nearby town of Kufa where Ali used to pray. He was stabbed to death in 661 AD.

Major General Abdel Karim Mustafa, the police chief in Najaf, said the security forces had deployed in strength.

"There have been no violations of the security plan we put in place," he said.

Shi'a pilgrims have regularly come under attack from Sunni insurgents since the fall of the former regime of Saddam Hussein in the April 2003 US-led invasion.

Pilgrim Mohammad Ali, a 40-year-old teacher, said: "This pilgrimage marks the mourning by all Muslims even now, as they still remember the death of Imam Ali."

Iranian pilgrim Mahdi Iskandri, 50, said people back home were envious that he was able to attend the pilgrimage.

"It is a great honour for me," he said.

"I am beside the shrine of Imam Ali on this day." - Sapa-AFP
