Sena-BJP alliance on the verge of break-up
Vilas Tokale
Mumbai, Aug 7 (PTI) The two-decade old alliance between Shiv Sena and BJP in Maharashtra is on the rocks, with the recent Presidential election bringing to fore the growing chasm in their ties.
While state BJP leaders have announced that the party would take a decision by August 15 on whether to continue the alliance with Sena, the latter has retorted by saying that it was up to BJP to clarify if the 'yuti' (alliance) was still on.
"The ball is in BJP's court. It should first declare whether the alliance is still on. Whether we are friends. Only then will Sena take a call on the Vice-Presidential poll", Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray declared.
BJP state unit chief Nitin Gadkari responded by stating that BJP would announce its stand on the fate of the alliance only after the Vice-Presidential poll.
BJP group leader in State Assembly, Eknath Khadse has ridiculed Sena's argument of having supported UPA-Left candidate Pratibha Patil because she is a Maharashtrian. "Even Najma Heptulla, the NDA nominee for vice-presidential poll, was born in Maharashtra. So, on this basis, those who backed Patil should also support her", he said.
BJP general secretary Gopinath Munde has been the most vocal opponent of Sena on the Pratibha Patil candidature issue. He termed 80-year old Sena supremo Bal Thackeray's decision to back Patil as a 'betrayal' of the alliance.
"The Sena supports Congress candidate for presidency and feels NCP chief Sharad Pawar should become the Prime Minister. Is this expected of an Opposition party?" he asked. PTI
