Rome - Pope Benedict XVI's meeting with a Polish priest who has been accused of making anti-Jewish comments has shocked Jewish groups, reports said Thursday.

Photos showing the pope at his summer residence with the Reverend Tadeusz Rydzyk, who runs the ultra-Catholic Radio Maryja, were published in Polish newspapers Tuesday after the pope met Rydzyk at his summer residence Sunday.

The pope met with Rydzyk, along with other pilgrims, after the pontiff's weekly public blessing Sunday in Castel Gandolfo, his summer home, the Vatican confirmed.

The European Jewish Congress said that it was 'shocked' in a letter to the Vatican, the La Repubblica newspaper reported Thursday.

The anti-Semitic remarks of Tadeus Rydzyk are carried repeatedly by his radio station, La Repubblica quoted the letter as saying.

Vatican officials said that the meeting would not affect the relationship between Jews and Christians.

The 'fruitful' dialogue between Jews and Christians would in no way be threatened by the pope's greeting the director of Radio Maryja, Cardinal Achille Silvestrini said.

Vatican circles said earlier, during his stay at Castel Gandolfo the pope was meeting numerous people who had applied for an audience.
