ROSTOV-ON-DON, Russia: A group of militants raided a village in Chechnya, killing three local residents, including a 3-year-old boy, and burning houses belonging to police officers, officials said Sunday.
About 10 gunmen descended on the village of Tsa-Vedeno in the southern Vedeno region late Saturday. They fired at a vehicle on the outskirts of the village and killed its three passengers, including the child, Chechnya's branch of Russia's Interior Ministry said in a statement.
The attackers also burned three houses belonging to officers of Moscow-controlled local police, but residents escaped unhurt, it said.
Authorities have begun a hunt for the militants, who they believed were led by a local resident, Russia's NTV television reported.
Large-scale battles in Chechnya, in Russia's volatile North Caucasus, ended years ago, but rebels continue to mount regular raids at federal troops and local Moscow-backed authorities.
