Four blasts in Assam, Ulfa suspected
Guwahati, Aug 15: Two persons were injured when Ulfa militants exploded four bombs adjacent to Independence Day celebration parade grounds in Assam`s Dhubri and Bongaigaon districts even as police recovered a huge cache of ammunition and explosives from the outfit`s camp in Sibsagar district and foiled a bomb blast bid today.
Police said two persons were injured when the proscribed militant outfit burst two Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) near Gandhi Maidan Parade Ground in Bongaigaon town at 8.23 am when the Independence Day celebrations were on.
The parade ground is also adjacent to the police reserve and about 150 metres away from the I-day celebration venue.
In neighbouring Dhubri district, the insurgents exploded two other bombs near the parade ground at Gauripur but none was injured, police said.
The first Programmable Time Devise (PTD) kept near an electric transformer went off at 8.38 am, while the next one kept in an open space 30 metres away blasted around 9.05 am as the flag hoisting was on.
Explosives and assorted ammunition were recovered from an Ulfa transit camp inside a forest in Singlu Sonari of Sibsagar district this morning after an overnight operation.
The ultras fled leaving behind half kg TNT explosive, 60 detonators, 103 rounds of AK-47 live ammunition, 12 rounds of 9-mm pistol ammunition, point 22 rifle 20 rounds, 70 rounds ammunition of 5.56 rifle, a bottle of mercury, two bottles acid, besides two diaries, the sources said.
