ALGERIA: LOUNES ASSASSINATION, TRIAL OPENS 10 YEARS LATER

(ANSAmed) - ALGIERS, JULY 8 - Ten years after the death of Matoub Lounes, the singer symbol of Algerian Kabylie killed in an ambush, the Tizi Ouzou court will open tomorrow the trial on the murder which the prosecution attributed to the Armed Islamic Group (GIA), the Algerian media report today. Matoub, dubbed the 'Rebel' for his opposition to the Islamic extremists and to the Algerian power, was killed at 42 on June 25, 1998 in an ambush in broad daylight near his home village, Taourirt Moussa. The singer and songwriter had been previously kidnapped by the armed Islamic groups in 1994. Ten terrorists, including 8 still on the run, were enlisted in the register of those under investigation, although the family of the singer and songwriter has repeatedly denounced numerous irregularities, especially in the reconstruction of the events and in the ballistic checks. A petition was launched by the committee 'Truth and justice on Matoub Lounes's assassination' to call for "a new summoning of the eye witnesses and a new reconstruction of the events, the carrying out of ballistic checks by independent experts, the summoning of all Algerian politicians authors of declarations on Matoub's death, the end of threats and pressures against the family and members of the committee and protection of the witnesses". The death of the democratic singer and songwriter, anti-fundamentalist and champion of the Berber cause (all his songs are in the Berber language) sparked off violent riots in the entire region, in which several protesters died.
