The Hindu Society of Calgary is holding a Guru Purnima fundraising event on Friday, July 18. Guru Purnima is the full-moon day in the month of July, that recognizes the spiritual gurus, their teachings and their lives.

To celebrate, a cultural program learned in the traditional guru shishya parampara (teacher-student tradition) method will be presented, says Jayashree Thatte-Bhat, the vice-president of culture at the Hindu Society.

"The guru shishya parampara is learning by rote method. It's how 5,000 years ago everything was taught -- music, sanskrit and so on," Thatte-Bhat says. "We wanted to showcase this tradition to the people here."

The event raises funds for the Hindu Mandir, 2225 24th Ave. N.E. The evening begins at 6 p.m. with an hour-long worship in the main part of the temple. The event then moves downstairs for a dinner between 7 and 8:30 p.m. A half-hour of speeches follows, with words from the chief guest Earl Choldin, the executive director of the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute at the University of Calgary. The evening wraps up with the hour-long cultural program.

Call 403-291-2551 for tickets (minimum $50 donation) at the Hindu temple.
