Six killed as two groups clash in Tamil Nadu town

Madurai, Aug. 14 (PTI): Six persons were killed when two groups of people, who have been engaged in clashes since the murder of a Hindu organisation's leader in December last year, attacked each other in Tenkasi near here today.

Police and revenue officials said seven persons, including the brother of slain Hindu Munnani leader Kumar Pandian, were on their way to a court in Tenkasi in Tirunelveli district, 160 km from here, in a car when they were waylaid by the other group, which hurled country made bombs and attacked them with sickles.

Those in the car retaliated and three persons were killed on the spot in the clash. Two others succumbed to their injuries on the way to hospital, officials said.

The seven persons were on their way to the court to appear in a case related to an earlier attack.

Deputy Inspector General of Police P Kannappan termed the violence as a "retaliatory attack".

As news of the clash spread, tension gripped Tenkasi and autorickshaws and buses went off the roads.

The place where the clash occurred was strewn with bags, blood, stones and splinters from the bombs.

Police forces were sent from Chennai to Tenkasi to avert any further untoward incidents, officials said.

The thenkasi(illegal) mosque is the root cause of all problems. The government should demolish that mosque.
