Insurgents burn school in Yala

(BangkokPost.com) - Southern rebels set fire to a school in Yala early Wednesday and intimidated villagers into letting it burn, leaving more than 200 students with no place to study.

The two-storey Ban Tohpagae school in Raman district was set ablaze at around 3 a.m., police said.

The arson attack destroyed eight rooms, all made of wood, including classrooms for students in grade 4 to 6, as well as a computer room where 30 computers were kept.

According to villagers, at least five teenagers ran out of the back of the school and disappeared into a rubber plantation. They believe the teenagers broke into the school and set it on fire when all security volunteers had left the school to tap rubber in the early morning.

Villagers said they were going to put out the fire when they heard several gunshots, so they changed their mind for fear of their own security.

The school is located just one kilometre from Wang Phraya army base.
