Priest Sex Abuse Victim Takes Stand
Afternoon News Webcast
Burlington, Vermont - June 25, 2007
It was an emotional morning as the Catholic priest sex abuse trial continued in Burlington. The man at the center of the case took the stand.
James Turner has accused Vermont's Roman Catholic Diocese of covering up the alleged abuse. He claims former priest Alfred Willis molested him 30 years ago.
Turner has already received an out of court settlement from Willis.
The church argues that Turner is just looking to get more money out of the Catholic Diocese. He's suing for a million dollars.
"I feel a lot of embarrassment, some sense of ashamement. It is what I need to do to move forward. I have a lot of hope for my future. Just as the empty chair with Willis, this is another milestone for me to get past and let people know, and make the diocese accountable for what they allowed to happen to me. The guy is an animal, that is all I can say, monster," said Turner.
Willis, who now lives in Virginia, was defrocked years ago.
He has said he will not attend the trial because Vermont is too far for him to travel.
