THE International Criminal Tribunal for Rwand (ICTR) prosecutors over the weekend claimed that the former Rwandan Priest, Hormidas Nsengimana (53), is among key suspects of the 1994 genocide, which claimed lives of more than 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus.
Danford Mpumilwa, Acting spokesman of the Arusha-based UN Court told 'Daily News' that the priest’s trial opened Friday morning and that the accused was facing charges of genocide, murder and extermination of ethnic Tutsi population.
Nsengimana has pleaded not guilty to the charges. The UN official said that Nsengimana looked composed and remained patient as the Prosecution lead counsel, Sylvana Arbia, who is also chief of prosecution, read out her trial opening statement.
“The prosecution will present 24 witnesses to prove their allegations,” said Mpumilwa. Witnesses are expected to include some members of the Rwandan clergy who have opted to divulge the truth over church’s role during the 101-day massacre.
“This is a trial which will reveal if there was any wrong doing by the church leaders during the genocide,” Mpumilwa said. According to the indictment, Nsengimana is alleged to have been among the organisers of the slaughter of Tutsis in Nyanza, Butare, southern Rwanda.
He is accused of playing a leading role in a group of killers called Les Dragons (The Dragons) or Escadrons de la Mort (Death Squad) which allegedly played a crucial role in the killings especially, around the Christ-Roi College, a statement from the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, said.
The statement added that Nsengimana is also alleged to have been instrumental in the killings of several priests from the College.
