Christian man assaulted for refusing to convert

A YOUNG Christian man in Pakistan has allegedly been gang-raped for refusing to convert to Islam.

The pressure group Release International said today that lawyers in Pakistan are investigating the claim, adding that the man, who has not been named, is seriously injured and unable to move.

However, the claim has not been registered by local police because of a counter-claim against the victim by one of the 30 perpetrators. They have, however, detained him and his supporters say he is being denied medical treatment.

According to the Centre for Legal Aid Assistance and Settlement (CLAAS) the man had been invited to take part in a game of cricket, but following a quarrel he was beaten up. Later that night he was invited to the home of one of his attackers.

Joseph Francis, the National Director of CLAAS, takes up the story: “When he entered the drawing room, he found it filled with unknown people. They began to beat him severely. They threatened him with dire consequences if he did not accept Islam. After his refusal, they committed sodomy with him one by one for the whole night.”

CLAAS say they have visited the victim and his family. They believe the counter accusation that he stole money and a mobile phone is false. They say the charges were drawn up by the attacker, who has used his influence to put pressure on the authorities.

“We’re deeply concerned about the growing number of attacks against Christians in Pakistan,” says Release International’s CEO Andy Dipper. “We are receiving reports of rape, abductions and forced conversion. Pakistan is becoming an increasingly difficult place for Christians to live.”

They add that legislation is currently being promoted that would impose the death penalty on any man, and life imprisonment on any woman, who converts to Christianity.
