Twin suicide blast in Iraq kill 28, wounds over 98 (2nd Lead)

Baghdad - At least 28 people were killed and over 98 wounded on Monday in separate suicide attacks in central and northern Iraq apparently targeting police officers and recruits, security and medical sources said.
In Beji, some 200 kilometres north of Baghdad, a suicide attacker detonated an explosives-laden tanker truck close to police headquarters, killing at least 20 Iraqis, including 11 policemen, and wounding over 56 others.
Security sources in the provincial capital Tikrit said the building partially collapsed owing to the force of the blast, while nearby houses were also severely damaged.
The emergency police building near the police headquarters was completely destroyed including 70 policemen inside, whose fate is unknown, the sources said.
The attack occurred as a US military delegation was to visit the building. No information on possible US casualties was however available.
The US forces, sources said, imposed a curfew on the city, preventing even Iraqi policemen from approaching the explosion scene.
The sources added that a US sniper killed two Iraqis who tried to carry two of the injured, as US choppers hit different areas of the town with five shells.
The reason for the US forces acts is still unknown.
South of Baghdad, at least eight police candidates were killed and 42 others wounded, some seriously, in a suicide attack at the gate of the police academy in the central city of Hillah, security and medical sources said.
Sources said that a suicide bomber driving a car bomb blew himself up as the students, who were due to graduate this Thursday, were entering the gate.
A series of attacks targeting policemen have struck Iraqi cities in the past two weeks.
