Hyderabad: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Dr Y S Rajasekhara Reddy plan to give reservation to Muslims in education and employment on the basis of their caste has hit a snag.
"I think, I'm quite sure that we'll come out with an ordinance and see to it that the promised reservation for minorities is implemented in Andhra Pradesh,” Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Dr Y S Rajasekhara Reddy had said earlier.
But Muslim leaders on Saturday decided to stall this move after an advisor appointed by the government recommended four per cent reservation for 14 castes of Muslims.
Muslim leaders fear the proposal will divide the community along caste lines, and say the government does not have credible data to classify the community into different groups as per their profession.
"The reason we are opposing it is because it goes against the basic ethos of Islam. Secondly, it will not stand in a court of law. I feel that the government is being misled or the government is deceiving the Muslims of Andhra Pradesh,” says Hyderabad MP, Asaduddin Owaisi.
Former President, Minorities Development Forum, Zaheeruddin Ali Khan, adds, “I don't think we will keep quiet. We'll have to fight tooth and nail, so that Muslim community is not divided on the basis of profession or caste.”
The Backward Classes Commission, to which the proposal was referred, is to conduct public hearings from June 23 to 26. The government had planned to use its recommendations to issue an ordinance and implement the Muslim Reservation Act, bypassing all legal hurdles. But with Muslims themselves opposing the move, it seems the government is placed in a tricky situation again.
