English Version of Saudi Novel Published in Egypt

JEDDAH, 29 May 2007 — The American University in Cairo Press (AUC Press), one of the Middle East’s leading publishing houses, has recently published the first-ever English translation of a Saudi novel.

The Arabic novel — entitled “Fikhakh Al-Ra’ihah,” which literally translates as “Traps of the Scent” — was originally published in 2003.

The AUC Press has now published its English translation “Wolves of the Crescent Moon.”

Fikhakh Al-Ra’ihah was written by Riyadh-based Saudi novelist Yousef Al-Mohaimeed and was published, like the majority of Saudi novels, in Lebanon four years ago by Beirut-based publishers Riad El-Rrayyes.

The book’s translator, Anthony Calderbank, has previously translated Arabic fiction written by Egyptians, but this was his first encounter with Saudi literature. In 2004, Calderbank translated two chapters of the novel for Banipal Magazine, which is a London-based English-language magazine specializing in Arabic literature. Calderbank said he found the novel highly interesting both on account of its topic and narration technique, so decided to publish it in full.

The novel tells the agony of three marginal characters living in Riyadh: Turad (a Bedouin), Nasir (an orphan) and Tawfiq (a former slave). They all live abandoned from the rest of society, which looks down on them and does not accept them in its vast hierarchic tribal system.
