Shout it out loud

Sir: With reference to the article by Razi Azmi titled “Moon, Muslims and modernity” (November 16, Daily Times) the writer has neglected to mention that loudspeakers were initially frowned upon by maulvis as a ‘bid’at’. Later on they seem to have embraced the idea as it increased their nuisance value. One of the major uses for the loudspeaker appears to be the dissemination of hate-content, to the extent that people have started avoiding buying of a house near a mosque, only to ward off the “noise pollution” created by these loudspeakers. It is ironic that the clerics actually seem to be making people run in the opposite direction from the mosques. Legally, the use of loudspeakers in mosques is restricted to the azaan and for the Friday khutba. Then again, when has the law ever mattered to the clergy?
